Does anybody know what Buell IE the X1 /XB/1125? was the proposed platform for the V-rod engine? |

I don't think it was any of them directly. The XB was developed as a result of the V-rod being so unsuitable for sport bike use. Erik flat out refused to use it. |

Nothing directly. The infamous prototype, however, was more or less an 1125 with a VR1000 engine (fuel in frame, split radiators, etc), but it was very crude and built in '89 I believe... could be wrong. |

I believe this part explains it, if not Part 2 does. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QKBSUOI7EQ&feature =related |

I believe its in "the book". The XB chassis design was initially for a liquid cooled motor since it "shrouds" the engine so much. But once the HD stylists got hold of the revolution powertrain and made it "look" like a Harley motor, it had gained so much weight and girth it no longer fit the bill. Literally. So the (and this is from memory, I haven't scanned the book for a long time) XB was born, from the new frame design and the traditional aircooled motor. I also want to say there is a photo in the book, circa...what, early mid 80s? that shows a prototype eerily similar to an 1125. |

O.O THAT was what got turned into the V-Rod motor? Wow. Though the "I don't know how much power it made... it kept blowing up on the dyno" was amusing. |

That is it in a nutshell. There was an early VR chassis proposal that HD didn't buy, big mistake, and then a sorta road going prototype with painted on lights and such with an actual VR motor (there is good story about that bike, the State Trooper and the old double nickel speed limit but I only tell that one after a few beers. When the actual Vrod motor came out it completely blew that whole idea up and the XB became the only solution. |

Roehr I always thought this was a cool idea for the V-Rod motor.

As I say often, "woulda, coulda, shoulda..." What was borne of a partnership with Porsche et al was wasted... The mobile museum showed up here in my town with a VR1000- I wish I could've pulled it out, looked at every angle, and... put a little gas in and brought it to life, at least as long as it took to run across the Foothills Parkway. I still love the color scheme of the VR, always thought it'd be natural for a racing Buell to carry on the colors... No need now. |
