Ok Badwebbers, anyone out there actively involved in the Oil/Gas industry? I need some inside info on this particular job... Application Evaluation Specialist Under direct supervision, assists in bit proposal development, bit application recommendations and post-well evaluation of bit performance. Provides technical and operational assistance to both external customers and internal customers in a professional manner. Performs assignments requiring knowledge and application of basic engineering principles, basic bit technology and basic drilling processes. Participates in developmental programs to accelerate learning. Learns bit design theory and how to use company technical application software tools such as SPARTA and the bit database. Skills are typically acquired through completion of an undergraduate degree in Engineering, or similar discipline and 2 years of industry experience, which includes drill bit experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This is an entry-level position for a graduate with two years relevant industry experience or non-degreed individuals with at least 4 years of relevant industry experience with at least 2 years bit industry experience. The Application Evaluation (AE) certification process leads to the minimum technical knowledge requirement for employees involved within Drill Bit Services (DBS) operations. I got a phone call today from an operations manager who was very excited to see my resume' roll across his desk, he mentioned this position as being something I might be cut out for. Also, he mentioned they would take the time to get me "caught up" so I can roll right out of the Army and into a new career. Not sure if that means sending me through some courses or just on the job training. In your experience, what sort of a position is this? (On site data collection, lab work, office warrior, etc.) What sort of certifications would I need to look at for this or what do I need to get smart on in the next few months before an interview. (What is Application Evaluation and drill bit theory exactly?) Still passing the resume' around and looking for options but this connection may turn out to be a winner as he mentioned they would offer me more things as the positions open and my time to military terminal leave draws closer. To those who have helped me with my resume'... you know who you are, THANKS! Badweb is an amazing place for motorcycle enthusiasts and helpful advice and assistance. |

Sounds like the job involves evaluating drill bit performance and making recommendations to customers regarding the appropriate bits for their applications. My guess is you would spend some time learning the basics of oil well drilling, then learn about the two basic types of bits (roller bits and fixed cutters). You might spend some time on active drilling wells. Here's a few links. The Wikipedia article is a good place to start, and there are more links there to various bit manufacturers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Well_drilling http://www.slb.com/services/drilling/drill_bits.as px http://www.nov.com/Downhole/Drill_Bits.aspx I'm not a drilling engineer, but I have a pretty sound grasp of the basics. I'll be glad to answer questions if I can, either here or via PM. rt |

I have a text book that is very good... "Drilling- The Manual of Methods, Applications, and Management" published by Australian Drilling Industry Training Committee Limited... a very good text with a lot of information and probably some you don't want to know about, but you can probably order it on-line... |

Thanks Char. My father is going to send up some of his old training materials also. He retired as an Engineer with Texaco/Chevron about 10 years ago. You'd think he'd be a good source of info but like he told me the other day on the phone... "You need to find folks on the ground doing it today. Things have changed and I've forgot most of the intricate stuff." |
