Got three bikes inspected today. Both the 1125 and XB were up this month and the wife's Duc was up last March(oops). The Blast(not pictured) ain't due until Jan. The three bikes sporting new Texas inspection stickers:

I notice that your RX7 is dusty. If you'd like, I'll wash it and fill up the tank. And the Mustang and Porsche |

ummm... inspection stickers? Inspection for what? Do they have to get inspected to renew registration? Nice vehicle lineup, by the way. |

@Thumper, I appreciate the offer but I couldn't do that to you. All three of those cars get about the same gas mileage, ~14 MPG. @Pwnzor, in the state of Texas street ridden motorcycles are required to pass a yearly vehicle safety inspection just like cars. While this isn't required for registration renewal or insurance it is a ticketable offense if caught without a current inspection sticker. In other words it's another way for the state to get $12.50/year out of me. Nels |

I just did mine today too. I got a parking ticket a couple of weeks ago and they could have written me up for my out-of-data inspection sticker. I'm glad it wasn't a $200 lunch. Just $100.![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/enraged.gif) |

What all do they look at? Can you get it done anywhere, or does it have to be at a government office? |

I have only lived in Illinois and Minnesota and neither have inspection. I would be surprised if either have higher accident rates because of poorly maintained vehicles. The inattentive drivers are the problem. |

Proper operation of: horn, headlight low beam, headlight highbeam, handbrake brakelight activation, and footbrake brakelight activation. It takes longer for them to enter the info, send it to Austin, remove old sticker, and stick on the new sticker than the actual inspection. Nels |

@Ducbsa, agreed re: accident rates vs. properly maintained vehicles and inattentive drivers. I would also add inattentive riders and riders doing what they ain't supposed to be doing... Nels |

Does it really do any good to get the junkers off the road? Every once in awhile I'll see a vehicle that has no business being out there but I figure that maybe they just can't afford to fix it. What is the black car? I can read turbo but I don't recognize it. I used to want fun cars but the price of gas killed the fun driving for me. My neighbor just finished spending $35k fixing up his old 72 Chevelle SS. Looks real nice but I wouldn't drive it much if it was mine. |

IMHO, the state inspection is just a tax. It is possible thought that it helps keep stolen vehicles from obtaining a legitimate status. I think they may run the VIN. For us honest people thought that let the inspection lapse it just becomes a bigger tax when they write a citation for it. |

in MA the yearly expiration day is the same for ALL motorcycles inspection stickers, May 31 and ALL motorcycle registrations end on the same day, Dec 31. Inspection cost: $15.00 For cars there is a yearly inspection emission inspection and every other year the inspection station must perform a safety inspection of the car as well. They jack up the front end and check ball joints, tie rods and give the vehicle a overall check. If the inspection station are pricks they can basically fail you for anything, as stupid as bad wipers, rot, tint, tires. Inspection cost: $29.00 |

I don't think vehicle inspections are a waste - having worked at a shop, there is some SERIOUSLY unsafe stuff people will put off fixing because they can't afford it - things that can cause harm to themselves, their passangers and to others. In NY, you get a general shake down to make sure the brakes aren't metal on metal, the suspension isn't falling out of the thing, there's no brake or fuel leaking anywhere, the frame isn't about the break in half from rot, all lights, horn, wipers are working, the tires aren't going to blow out and to make sure the emmissions equippment are present (visual inspection only). Then it gets plugged into the computer and it makes sure the car isn't throwing any codes. We don't do a sniffer test, but I think some places downstate do. The safety stuff is all must fix. It's amazing how much play some front ends have and people don't want to fix them, even if there's a baby seat in the back. Crazy. For the emissions, the state has recognized that things can get expensive fast. I forget what the limit is, but after you spend a certain amount of money trying to get a CEL to go out without success, you can get an emissions exempt status on the car. |
