i've been 'hippo hand' curios for a while. it's that time of year again and the temps are giving me motivation to actually buy some instead of just riding thru the pain/cold. now that i'm shopping around i find that there are many other brands that are much cheaper .... alot for ATV/snowmobile applications. are the HIPPO HANDS worth the price? any body have recomendations for a set that is worth the $? |

I have the Oxford version. They work great and they were only $50. |

Powermadd handle bar gauntlets. I have them, and they work well. could be a little longer - go up the arm more, but they provide good cover and are super easy to get in and out of: http://www.powermadd.com/products/HandguardGauntle tATV.html http://www.amazon.com/Powermadd-Star-Handguard-Gau ntlet-PM14258/dp/B003175FFY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid =1319869514&sr=8-2 |

I tried a set on a long trip one winter. Only problem that I had with the particular set that I was using was, anything above about 50-55 mph the "mitt" would press against the brake lever, noticbly enough that the front end would lower at anything above that speed. Thank God I didn't hit a slick spot before figuring out what was happening. But boy they sure good and toasty! |

The ones I have are Moose racing from denniskurk.com. With those and the hand warmers on low I can wear thin gloves. You have to put them over the wind guards and that holds them open and off the levers.

I bought some cheapo atv ones last year. They attach right to my FLH but needed some modifying to work on the Uly. The problem I ran into was that I can't ride without being able to see the controls. That and if you take a hand out while riding, it took some fumbling around to get it back inside. It may be that they would work just fine once I became familiar with them but the learning curve could be deadly so I never used them. |

I actually have mine on the inside of the wind guards, I got used to it like that. Maybe I will try outside this year. Thats true dan, but also true that that learning curve is short. You learn that you just need to apply a tad more concentration to your hand when inserting it back... after 3-4 times it's like butta. And... they WORK. |

Sorry folks, I just don't care to ride when such countermeasures are necessary to enjoy the outing. |

I know you're right and I may try them again this year. By the way, mine have a pouch inside for a chemical hand warmer thingie and work so well that gloves are nearly not needed at all. They were on sale at Bi-Mart for $14. |

most people ive talked to that have run them without some kind of a guard in front of the levers say the wind pushes the mit back and put pressure on the front brake, leaving it somewhat always engaged just a hair at speed. which could end very badly... that being said, is one of the only reasons i havent put a set on something. i have no hand guards on anything. |

So that means you don't ride at all then? Or do you somehow enjoy riding without countermeasures for sun, wind, rain, collision, noise and other dangers on the road? |

Only if they aren't adjusted correctly. The XB hand guards take out all the guesswork and trail and error though. |

I was just going to post about the brakes... I rode behind a guy last winter and his brake lights were on the entire time we were on the highway because of the hippo hands. Personally, I find the XB handguards + heavy insulated gloves to work just fine down to about 0F, but I'm younger than the bulk of you, and my understanding is that the older you get, the better heated gear looks. My plan is to get heated gloves at some point. |

I think it's more of not giving a crap what you look like when you ride and the fact that you can be in more control by wearing your summer leather gloves instead those fat expensive bulky gloves. |

i run the handguards on my uly, so all this talk of brake/clutch lever issues won't apply (provided the mitts are big enough to fit over the guards) Mnrider; are there any improvements you'd like in your moose racing mud paws? or another brand that would be better/warmer? i'd like to get away with just the muffs and no heated grips if i could ... |

I just had to cut some thread away from the opening to get them to fit over the handguards. Been using them on snowmobiles and ATV's for many years and these Moose ones seem as well made as any. Gave my last set to a fellow badwebber on a trip cause I had electric grips. |

I heard today that our local Bi-Mart has them on the discount rack for $7. These are for a quad and require some modification to work on a Uly but $7 is $7. |

Some I've seen the opening for your hands is too small. Make sure there's plenty of room to get your hands in and out easily. |

Hey Whisperstealth, Was there any modifications needed to get the Powermadd handle bar gauntlets to fit the Uly? Do you have a pic of them installed? |

I'm going to have to pick up a pair of the PowerMadd or similar, I've been using knockoff brand ones but they are a size too small for large aftermarket handguards that I am using on my 1125CR, I can't press my switches anymore. |

I went to Bi-Mart tonight. They had one set left. Camo in color. $8.99 in price. Google Quadgear ATV Mitts for a description. These are unopened, new, in the box. I went by the post office too. $14.99 for a flat rate box that looks like a fit. So like $24 for the camo mitts delivered. Mike5000 was the first one to email about this so he gets first dibs. Nillaice, you are second in line if you still want them. |
