I have an '09 Road King that's included. It's just the brake light switch for the rear brake. |

People are making a big stink of it. Appears to be a voluntary recall. |

The brake light switch quit on my Honda, I just replaced it. Didn't need a recall. |

Quoted from Consumer News: Unsafe by definition: Voluntary recall Feb 15, 2010 8:00 AM What it is: Most recalls of defective products are characterized as "voluntary," a confusing term that can lead consumers to believe that the recall is optional. But voluntary recall is just government-speak for a deal that a manufacturer or retailer of a hazardous product has negotiated with the federal agency in charge of overseeing the safety of that product category. Voluntary recall would also seem to indicate that there are “mandatory recalls” that can be issued by the government should manufacturers or retailers refuse to cooperate, but nearly all the recalls announced last year were voluntary. |

Same thing happened on my Buell. Lost the rear brake too and made a big mess with brake fluid everywhere. Easy and cheap to fix but had to special order the parts... |

No big deal. It happens all the time in the vehicle world. Bulletin notice = you will probably never know of a low level fix that they will do as a matter of you bringing it in for service. Like a door lock rod rubbing a wire, slim chance of a problem, but an issue was found. Publicly forced Recall = when enough people and their lawyers pressure a mfgr into repairing things they say are not their fault, like the Fords that burned down over a master cylinder wire plug issue, or GM's infamous computer random brake failure, and Toyota's random WFO throttle problem. They usually have to kill a good number of customers before this level actually becomes a recall. Voluntary recall = it will be fixed when you have it in for something else or when you ask them to fix it. You may get a notice in a "we sell oil changes" flier. Like the BAS sensor relocation on the Ulys. Mandatory recall = you will be sent notice to bring it in asap, or quit driving it until it is fixed, etc. Kind of hazardous stuff like the seat belts failing, airbags killing people, wheels falling off. SILENT Lock Down "call the district management" recall = What GM did when my then new '03 GMC's ABS computer had it randomly locking the brakes one wheel at a time. When I took it in it was like the truck was on fire. "Sir, take your personal items, here is your rental vehicle, we will call you." They scooted off with the truck jumping it way ahead of the other customers.....as if they were waiting for this problem. |
