Damit. So I forgot to turn off my heated grips this morning. Got a jump about an hour ago and been on turnpike doing 80. Bike died after 40 miles or so. I was pushing 80+ but battery was bone dead when I jumped it. Dealer near me... gotta get there before 8. |

You need a relay.Less than $8 at Radio Shack. I did the same thing with my Polly Heaters. Killed a Hawker Odyssey battery. |

Does nobody run their heated grips off the factory installed accessory line? You never would of been in that situation if you did! |

Right...froggy...you mentioned that a year or two ago too. Yea...its thex original battery...probably new in 2006 but has been dead and trickle charged about 8-10 times. I have new one on the way. Harly dav batt 109+tax or so. I have to redo that wiring. Glad its not too cold or raining. |

I run my Polly Heaters off the accessory line with no problems from dead battery or fuse popping. Excellent set up. |

And you can do it without even using a switch if you wanted... just run it to the accessory line, and put in the thermostat. It only runs the heat when it's cold, and when the bike is charging the battery. If it is warm, or the stator is overwhelmed and the battery is draining, the heat shuts down. No problems running it off the accessory line on my Uly. |

What thermostat, Reep? I never saw a t-stat in a Polly heaters setup. Some other brand? |

I could of sworn I used a line from the accessory when I hooked it up... the power comes from battery to relay, then to grips. I probably have it hooked up wrong. At any rate,.. if your 06 uly on a completely dead battery got a quick jump, got bike running and rode 50 straight miles @ 4k rpm wouldn't that charge the battery alittle? (My bike died after about 40 miles) |

XDigital... Once you got it going, if you didn't stall it, 4k should have been plenty to charge it. On the other hand, 40 miles sounds about right for a charged battery and damaged stator... thats about how long it takes to kill a battery. |

Reepicheep - so cool. I mean, hot. But warm, actually. Whatever (not Char). You know what I mean. LOL Thanks. |

dumb Q...is there an easy way to test my stator? Could I disconnect the battery with it running and see it stays running? I have an E tester but cannot locate it at the moment. I am gonna check the wiring now. I honestly don't remember if I forgot to turn off the heated grips or not...so if I DID turn them off then it probably is the stator. |

There's a procedure for testing the stator and rectifier in the service manual. But first I would see if its even charging at all with the bike running. There should be around 14V at the battery at ~3000 rpms. You could also check the 77 connector for visible signs of arcing as that frequently causes charging issues. |

I replaced the 77 connector but while trimming the wires I got a spark (DOH) I immediately stopped and disconnected the battery and continued, I also disconnected the lead for the heated grips and heated vest from the battery. When I was done, I found I blew the battery fuse so I tried the jumper but the bike would not start... battery was very low again. Hopefully...it was due to a short from from the heated grips. I am trickle charging the new battery now. |

I think my neutral switch is bad or some wiring got screwed up when I put it back together because it will only start with clutch in but it's running ok. I still have to get it checked to make sure it's charging. |

not neutral switch... I rechecked all the wiring near the 77 switch and removed all the fuses to check for corrosion and saw the black diode fuse arrow was pointing the wrong direction... shown on the fusebox cover. As soon as I switched it around she started right up. Now I am off to check voltages. |

Voltage checked out good. Gonna re-wire the heated grips over the weekend and I'll be ready for winter. |
