I remember when I got my first iPhone, and I remember going through the process of picking a plan in iTunes. Well, apparently it's still that way with a newly-restored iPhone 2G. Check this out. I'm borrowing afriend's 2G to get my unlimited data back this week.

That'll get locked down in a hurry.

I have unlimited data with AT&T, but I was grandfathered in from my 3G.

I've got Verizon begging me to upgrade my phone to a 4g...

LOL @ them... I'm month to month now with unlimited everything. Staying that way, I'll pay full price for a new 3g phone after my Droid 1 finally dies... which it's in no danger of doing at this time.

It won't. iTunes has it gradfathered in. As long as the iPhone 2G is around, this will work. People have been doing it for 3 years.

I was unlimited as well with my Droid, it died, I upgraded to iP4 and still carried my plan over. They won't allow it on a month to month?

Does it cut your texting plan to 200 messages per month?

Some have and some haven't, but Texting is now a separate portion of the plan, and an easy fix @AT&T with a phone call. Most have had their unlimited texting override the 200 txt plan. So this isn't always a user-only fix; it may take a call to AT&T to finalize, but with some work it works. It's a lot easier with an iPhone 4/4S, since the system will detect that the device is 3G capable within a few hours and automatically switch you to the $30/mo unlimited 3G plan.

Hmm... I'm very interested in this, wonder if there's a way we can get a phone sharing thing going...

The hard part is finding one that still has a good battery I'd imagine. If they sit too long dead try won't work. Fortunately I have a friend that has two that his kids use and one isn't being used since wifi doesn't work on it.

So Ross, would you be kind enough to walk me though in excruciating step-by-step detail, what exactly I'd need to do with my iPhone 3G and my Dad's 3GS using a friend's 2G in order to recover our unlimited data options that I unwisely dropped to save $5 a month?

1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before.

2) Hard reset the iphone,

Will this delete all the data on my friend's phone? Recoverable through sync on his computer once he puts his sim back in it? Any possible problems?

3) put in your simcard,

4) register the iPhone 2G in iTunes.

5) You will be asked to confirm you agree to $20/month unlimited 2g data + 200 text messages. (I can over-ride text plan via att web interface if needed, yes? Currently have unlimited family text plan, so maybe it won't even be an issue?)

6) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.

7) Find a CSR that will change your iPhone 2g plan to unlimited smartphone personal. I tried over the phone multiple times and they kept on saying they couldn't do it since the unlimited plan didn't exist before June 2010. I was about to give up but went to a retail location and the guy did it on his computer.

I have a family plan, so is this a no go for me?

At what point do I revert to the new iPhone with my SIM? The above instructions don't say.

I'd certainly expect to pay the $30/mo for UL data, just like I was before stupidly switching to the 2GB limited data plan. Paying just $20 with a class 3 or 4 iPhone would be dishonest.

Found the answer. Not going to work unless my friend has ditched his 2G and still has it.

Known Issues

If the iPhone 2G you are using is still assigned to another AT&T account, activation might not complete, you might not receive the activation complete email and after a long wait, you will get an, “unable to complete activation email”. This is the most common reason for failed activations. If you know the account assignment status of the iPhone 2G, make sure you replace the iPhone 2G on that account with another phone first. This means AT&T has to have the replacement phone on-file for the account that once had the iPhone 2G you are using.

Resolution – You’ll need to call AT&T and have them manually activate the phone for you. It helps to tell them you were trying to activate your unlimited data iPhone plan through iTunes with your iPhone. As well, you can go to any company owned AT&T store and they can get you setup as well. Make sure to bring the iPhone 2G with you and that you are or have with you, the primary account holder.

Yeah, the 2G phone cannot be currently used on another plan. But once the network switches you to the 3G plan, the 2G iPhone isn't registered to it anymore. Most problems in my readings came from people with new sim cards. From my readings, your current sim card will work fine. You also need to be able to take the 2G with you to AT&T if you have any problems.

One option may be to buy one off eBay as cheap as you can find, use it, then sell it back on eBay or even offer it here.

Oh, and you switch the sim right after you get service on the 2G.

Oh, and yes a hard reset will erase all the data. But if you back it up first you can restore it (but remember to set up as new phone when doing this process. Restore from backup only after you have everything fixed). Also, if you have multiple phones, reset this process and do it with each line once you get the unlimited data bumped to 3G, cuz that's when the 2G's iemi will be bumped off your current account. It'll work with any account, but each has to be set up individually. If you have multiple accounts, it may be more feasible to buy a phone so you can use it as long as you need, then sell it back. You could probably find more people here even that'd be interested. Online iPhones have rediculously good resale. The 2G is still selling for $75-80, and locally I only pay about $40/ea for a 3G and $60/ea for a 3GS. I'm actually in the process of securing a deal for 120!!! iPhone 3G's (possibly some 3GS's in there too) that have various issues at an average of half the prices I just mentioned. I'm stoked to get to say the least : D.

You can't get the discounted price on a phone through Verizon without "upgrading", which changes your plan. They don't have unlimited 4G. The unlimited 3G plans can be renewed for another 2 years as long as you pay full price for a phone (or acquire it some other way). OR, you can do like will, and keep the same plan month to month and activate the phone yourself using *228.

4G phones need not apply. I don't stream football or TV shows so I really don't need 4G. My 3G still averages 1.2 Mb speeds or better.

Ross,

>>> Yeah, the 2G phone cannot be currently used on another plan.

To be sure I understand you, the 2G scheme for upgrading to unlimited data won't work for a family plan account?

It will work on any plan. I'm on a family plan and it'll still work. The 2G iPhone cannot be a phone that is currently being used. When you activate the 2ag unlimited plan through iTunes, it ties the iPhone imei to your number. Once the plan switches to 3G unlimited, the imei is dropped since it's obviously not being used anymore because it's not a 3G-capable device. So once you get 3G service restored to your 3G/3GS/4/4S after you do this, then it's safe to use that 2G on ANOTHER line to do the same thing. Does that clear it up? If nothing else Blake, my phone number is on my Facebook; you can call me around 10AM or later and aU can better explain it.
