I can be so disappointed at times to hear another sport bike enthusiast quickly dismiss Buell as an option, and only look to japan for their next machine. Especially when it's a person that has never ridden a Buell, but they are too caught up in unimpressive stat sheets to give them a chance.

I don't even think it's a "that person doesn't like my brand" thing. It's depressing to know that someone could spend their life on a motorcycle and never know what Buell had to offer.

Like I said.. I'm too attached.

Hybrid - I wouldn't call it blind faith. I've ridden the others, and the others are great. But they belong on a track.. it's just where they shine because it's where they were meant to shine.

Those people are missing out on something great! I don't like those people. I had a guy say oh you put a harley engine in a sport bike frame. I wanted to slap his face! I have a few different types of motorcycles and i love the buell more than any of my bikes. my ninja zx10r is a close second though. My other bikes are purpose bikes only.

Well yeah, its not blind faith, but its blind hatred. people that dismiss a product with no real experience is ignorance at its finest.

>>> a harley engine in a sport bike frame

That's pretty much how I describe what an air-cooled Buell V-Twin is to those ignorant of the brand.

Why would that possibly be upsetting? : ?

Moar Buells for us! : D

Just have patience. There aren't really very many new Buells available right now.

I'm seeing the same things I saw with Apple laptops about 8 years ago - everyone "knew" they were rubbish compared to the competition... yet almost every hardcore "Never will get a Crapple" type I knew was very, very curious (while trying to not appear curious). "Wait, do that again. What's that?"

Several coworkers of mine swore they'd never get a Mac. Well, maybe, if they could run Windows on it... and... wait, you hooked this mouse up over Bluetooth without it taking all afternoon to fight bluetooth driver stack issues? Hm...

Last I checked, they all have Macs. : D

I see the same thing with Buells right now, both in person & on some other forums.

"Why would you want one of those? They're weird! And they don't have fuel tanks in the right spot!"

"Why would you put a Harley motor in a sportsbike? That's just stupid!"

"I saw one of them in person. The Ulysses looks like a badass, better version of my Versys... Hm..."

etc.

People are coming around.

The 2000s were the decade of the Japanese bikes.

Triumph, BMW, KTM, and Ducati are doing a good job at making the 2010s the decade of the European bikes.

If Buell takes off again, and Indian/Victory/etc figure themselves out, I see it as entirely possible that the 2020s could be the decade of the American motorcycles.

i find it odd that you say that blake?! as much as you openly dislike hd these days, and others do as well. im surprised many would mention that it is a harley or harley based motor unless they absolutely had to to explain it.

no debate intended, just an observation of something i didnt expect.

me, i'll ride with most any make or model, and if given the opportunity i will ride them myself. much of my hard earned money has gone towards buells, not all of it though, and not all of my mc money will in the future either. a supermoto WILL grace my garage one of these days... its past due.

Ah the "old" debate.
Generally speaking, once a rider has enough miles under his tires, he (or she) realizes that the Ninja (or whatever) that can do 105 mph in first gear is frustrating and downright boring on the street. All thats left is bragging rights and the nagging thought in the back of their mind - "why do I ride this bike again?" If the rider is smart and paying attention to what's available, he has his eye on a Buell already.
As most of us already know, once he pulls the trigger on one, he's likely hooked for life.
I know I am.

And what's worse, there are plenty of other bikes - British, Italian, Austrian, German - that generally have tons more character than the HondaYamaSuKawa line.

Tim,

It's a painful thing to have to say for sure. I do usually say that it is a "hot-rod Harley engine." : )

I just explain that it's what HD could have/should have built.

Generally speaking, once a rider has enough miles under his tires, he (or she) realizes that the Ninja (or whatever) that can do 105 mph in first gear is frustrating and downright boring on the street.

Agreed 100%. The thing is that I largely feel that way about the 1125, or God forbid the 1190.

What I really want to say when I describe it is "It's a Harley Sportster motor, but less ruined." But I try and avoid it, because I don't want people to take it the wrong way...

I mean it though. The fact that Harley designed a motor in the 60's that Buell could tune in the 2000's to be making a reliable 80 RWHP from 989cc's at 7800 RPM while getting 45 MPG is really amazing across the board. And I love the motor.

But Harley, in the sportster, had pretty much ruined it by the time Buell came along. They moved on to different motors, relegated the Sporty to "the cheap bike" instead of "the sporty bike". They ruined the intake and exhaust in styling exercises. They foisted stupid shortcomings that were straightforward to fix on customers for a decade instead of just fixing them (i.e. metal primary and rocker box gaskets... duh!)

I tend to describe the XB motor as a "Sportster-derived motor, with modern features like power and torque added."

They really are nice motors, once you ride them. It's just that most people, for quite valid reasons, see "45 degree air cooled v-twin" and think "Underpowered tractor motor." For quite valid reasons...

Sometimes I feel elated by the sound, handling and power of my XT when out riding in a fun area. It is such a nice bike to ride, better than any others that I have had. Then I have the realization that I cannot buy a new one to replace the one I am rapidly wearing out and I am bummed out. I then always feel much better after I remember that I can just rebuild it and start over.

It not just the Buell, it is the community of Buell people. I have met some great people and have made good friends since purchasing my XT in 2008.

I'll consider any motorcycle someone legitimately wears out and has to rebuild to have lived an awesome life.

... and, well, the cylinders are worn a bit out of spec, so I guess you *have* to bore them over a bit.

... and, well, you can't rebuild the rear suspension easily, so I guess a nice high end Ohlins should go in...

... woah, wouldn't want to do the rear without doing the front suspension to match...

... and that pipe, well, if you bore the motor out, you NEED to flow better... so a bigger exhaust is purely a nobrainer, right?

etc.

Most motorcycles never get anywhere NEAR enough miles to need a rebuild. And that's sad.

I'd love wearing out a motorcycle so much that I have to rebuild it from the ground up. So many fun things to do in the process! : D

Lately I'm surprised by how many people like them, or at least recognize them for what they are. I saw a lot more Buell hate working at an H-D shop than import shops.

When people have to ask, I just tell them it's the funnest thing I've ever rode. There's really no better way to put it.
