How many folks here employ a financial advisor? If so; do you follow their plan to the letter? |

I've got one. Follow his plan? Well he helps me make my plan. If you are talking to one that just has a canned plan I would keep looking. I have taken a lot of his advice though. He gets a lot of info from folks that are paid to do financial analysis. No single person can possibly do this on their own. We've been quite happy with the results for about 25 years now. |

I do. We work on my Company 401K - he doesn't charge for that advice. He works with me on the other investments - IRA, Stocks, funds. I don't have time to do it and overall, even with the downturn, it's doing OK. Edward Jones (Alec Lothert). Agent is in Wisconsin - we work on the phone and internet - and I'm in CA. In fact, I'm going to be in WI next week and will be meeting with him again. Alec Lothert page |

Slaughter: Take Alec to the Mineshaft for a meal. It's a local eatery in Hartford, casual dining, good food, good atmosphere. Reasonable $$ |

We're gonna hit Mineshaft with Family on Tuesday. My cousin's Dad passed away and this'll be the first time we've gotten together since then. We ALWAYS hit Mineshaft with family and Sunny and I will sit in at Perc Place there in Hartford. Kinda like the place. |

I use a local Edward Jones agent. I am on my second one; I was not impressed with my first agent. There are a couple offices near me so I moved my accounts. A++ now! Do I follow the plan to the letter? No There have been some drastic changes to the economy that caused my financial plan to change too. I do believe that I made better choices, and am better positioned, than I would have been unassisted. Worth it to me. |

I have advisor/broker. I bounce ideas and questions off of him after I have researched myself. He has not suggested a different plan than I have. So far he agrees with me 100% except a recent move of me paying off my house instead of dumping more cash into the market. He is cool with it, but he would have used the cash flow differently. If you don't understand what you are doing with your money don't do it. |

A good financial adviser should also meet your expectations of what you need. Are you looking for someone to provide advice on putting together a complete stocks/bonds portfolio or just helping you make sense of half a dozen options in your 401K plan. I'm guessing the answer is somewhere in between, but you should get the idea. Also make sure that he/she fits well with how aggressive/conservative your risk tolerance is. A good adviser will discuss these things with you up front. I work with someone from Ameriprise Financial Services. They can handle all the buying/selling of a very wide range of mutual funds (always only with our say so). They can also set you up with a trading account for individual stocks. They also can set you up for automatic monthly investments going into the funds of your choice. We were one of his early clients and have been a good client so he comes to our house in the evenings periodically to discuss where we are and to make any necessary adjustments. This has proven to be very convenient for us over the years, but it may be hard finding someone who will do the same deal for you. |

Credit unions will often provide you the service for free. If you have enough money in your IRA, a person from the company that manages it can usually be assigned to you free of charge. |

If your employer offers 401k plans, you likely have access to the planners at the financial service company that maintains the accounts. For example, my company uses Fidelity to manage the 401k accounts, and all employees get two free (to the employee) consults per year with a financial adviser. Might be worth asking. |

My wife and I just hired one. I am pretty comfortable with what choices to make during the whole safe and invest period of your life but not real comfortable with how to handle the years leading up to and in retirement. Looked for an independent type and sorta a got one. The guys we hire have some affiliation with Massachusetts Mutual but are not sales guys and don't push the Mass Mutual products. It is very hard to find good guys that don't have some sort of incentive to sell you a particular product. We have been very unhappy with the little work we have done with a broker. These guys are very good; they do a detailed, complete, analysis of where you are and where you want to go. It took hours of interviewing before they even began a plan. They looked at everything from our auto insurance to our mortgage to our investments. In fact the LAST thing they looked at is our investments. They had super good ideas on the various insurance plans we have, including our medical coverage (we can use mine or my wife's). Very, very helpful. Pricy but some of the insurance ideas will cover their fee in a very few years. They are also helping us get a real budget set up and are actually getting my wife to spend less, a small miracle in itself I asked every profession we know for recommendations. We got several but these guys sounded the best. |

The agent will come to my home or where ever is convenient for me... I'm one in the middle, he advises on 401k choices, and has set up some IRAs and other small investments. No pressure to buy, sell or "just move things around." So far my only regrets are that I waited so long to get one; Ameriprise has been good for my finances. |
