Seeing Dan Wheldon come around turn 4 to win this years Indy 500 was one of my favorite memories. Dan will be missed. Thought and prayers are with his family.
This evening my thoughts and prayers are with Dan Wheldon's friends and family. Out of all the racing professionals I have had the opportunity to work with over years he was my favorite by a long shot. I will never forget our helicopter ride over his home and the beaches of St. Pete.
A great shame and he will be sadly missed. He was a match for Jenson Button in the lower formaulae and was certainly good enough for F1, if only he could have found the necessary financial backing to get him there. However F1's loss was Indycar's gain.
Listening to the continuing coverage of the tragedy this morning on BBC it seems that this may be Indaycar's 'Senna Moment' that will be a catalyst in improving safety for drivers at least. There appears to be quite a lot of well informed people coming forward saying that the 1.5mile was too narrow and there are too many cars on track at high speed with too little room for manoevre.
Hopefully this will at least bring forward more safety measures to protect future drivers in the same way that Senna's tragic death did in F1.
