Please discuss. I am curious about linking a checking account to their service. I wouldn't do it with my main account, for sure.

Do your research- I have found PayPal/eBay to be an insidious corporation. Think about who you trust to have access to your bank account. Think about what you're willing to give up in order to gain a little convenience. Think about how easy or difficult it will be to correct an issue regarding your money if you run into a problem. Can you pick up the phone and call?

Have you ever tried to close an eBay account? Would you be surprised to hear that it's impossible to close an eBay account once opened? Even if you demand your information be removed from their site it will never be closed. Wonder how I know?

When things go well eBay/PayPal works- it just costs you. When things go bad- beware. Think about who you want to give control to.

Also, if you support the Second Amendment to the US Constitution and don't want to do business with those who don't- research eBay/PayPal's policy on the subject.

Good information is the basis for sound judgement...

I don't like the idea, but I did it, with no issues over 5+ years.

They will make it increasingly difficult to choose your credit card as a payment source. They will always default it to your bank, and the "alternate sources" keeps getting smaller and better hidden. Next thing you know they will be making you do math problems to change your payment source... :/

Know that if you send as a gift, it is really a gift. If you call PayPal back later and say "the seller never sent me anything, I want my money back", PayPal will respond with "Tough. You said it was gift, not a payment for goods or services, so it was a gift".

Premier Business Member since 2001.

Never, ever a single problem. Pays me 1% cash back every month on every signature based transaction.

The transactions are emailed directly to my phone within minutes, and takes 2 days to clear my checking account. Therefore, I can cancel my card and block the payment before it ever gets withdrawn.

Win/win.

I love having the extra $50 to $60 every month to spend when my cash reward comes in.

Wow, seems like some contradictory experiences. I have an account that is unlinked that I use to pay for stuff, but that is only good up to $500. Since I have been selling parts lately I was considering making the link to make it more convenient for buyers to pay me. I would not link them to my primary account I know. I have more research to do on alternatives, too.

I will have to check out the eBay/PayPal policies regarding gun ownership. Seems like an odd thing for a company to have any policy about, but whatever.

Just open a free checking account at any credit union, and link that. Use it only for those transactions.

Done.

the only thing paypal says in regards to guns, ammunition, etc is that you cannot use paypal for the sale of said items. How is that infringing on the 2nd ammendment?

They do the same thing for raffles for charity.

Some of you just seem to look for things to complain about. Life is way too short!!!

Paypal isn't the government. The constitution controls the federal government, not private business. At least, that's the way it was supposed to be.

It's a principle issue, but not everyone has principles.

Are there any legal items restricted from purchase by your credit card company? Would you care if there are? Does it matter more or less if the restricted items are something you care about?

PayPal restricts legal firearm and ammunition transactions through their system. How many other items are on their banned list? Why is this? Would you feel differently if PayPal arbitrarily decided it wouldn't allow payment for the private, legal transfer of motorcycles? I believe in the Second Amendment, obviously PayPal has an issue with it. This is just one reason why they won't get my money. Similarly, I won't buy gasoline from Citgo because of their connection to Hugo Chavez. For me, principles matter.

It's not complaining, it's deciding about whether to enter into a business relationship with a third party based on information, personal experience, and principles. I'm providing information based on my experience. Yours may vary.

Kinda the same feeling until I had a huge (discovered by account emptied one day) issue with them . . . I have a horror story that is too long to relate here.

I, with some legal help, got it straightened out but it was expensive and tiresome.

If you are the SELLER . . . in ANY dispute your are wrong. Facts be damned.

PayPal restricts legal firearm and ammunition transactions through their system.

If you view PayPal's Acceptable Use policies, they clearly state that they do not support payments for firearms. However, they also do not permit transactions for tobacco products, switchblades, pharmaceuticals, Native American artifacts, "mature audience" items, or dozens of other regulated items and substances that present a potential legal liability listed in their 'acceptable use' section.

Yeah, they have a lot of rules... they could just exclude you from using the service completely. I find it highly convenient, and I can use my PayPal Mastercard to purchase anything I want.

I have been lurking this board for the better part of 7 years. When I saw this, I had to post my agreement with Court. I also had a horrible experience with Paypal, too long to detail, that required much legwork to get around. Just realize that they have an F the seller attitude even when the buyer is a lying sack of crap. DO NOT link any account of any importance to them. Try doing a search titled "PayPal is ****" and read the literally millions of experiences.

I appreciate your input David. Part of why I asked is because I have heard a lot of negative things since they first started up. Over the years I suppose I have hoped maybe they would have improved but it doesn't sound like it. Linking only a special purpose account for dealing with them sounds like the safest way of using them to receive money.

As stated earlier, the "Acceptable Use" policy is just one reason I won't do business with eBay/PayPal.

Back in '06 I switched from being a buyer to a seller- that introduced me to a Pandora's Box of frustration. Something as simple as updating an address seems to be beyond eBay's capability.

I had recently moved and signed up to be a seller about the same time. I updated my address in the system and everything seemed fine- my account showed my previous address and my new, updated address. I then received an email stating my account had been frozen. I replied to the email to inquire about the situation and I received a response (I thought from a real person) saying my account had conflicting information. I double checked, and my account plainly showed the previous address and the newly updated current address. What's the issue? Well, I took issue with the fact that the day after I received the "Frozen Account" email, eBay went into my bank account and debited $1 as part of setting up as a seller. Wait a minute- you decline my seller request and then go into my bank account and debit money? Totally unacceptable.

Well, I quickly found out that none of my emails were going to real people at all- they were computer generated form emails that could never address the problem. The issue could have easily been solved in a two minute phone conversation with a person- but that was not an option. I still have over 75 emails archived showing my attempts to correct eBay's error but to no avail. I then went to eBay's own "Soapbox" section to try and get help from other members- that was an eye-opening experience. That's where I learned just how insidious eBay/PayPal really is. The stories I heard from long-time eBay users about the abuse they endured from eBay would make your skin crawl.

I decided then and there to close my account and no longer do business with eBay/PayPal, but to my surprise found out once your're in- you can never leave. I have another 20 or so emails archived showing my attempts to have eBay close my account. But once an account has been created, it will never be closed- no matter what you do.

I returned to eBay's "Soapbox" to get advice, and there I was instructed to remove all information in the account that could link it to me, and just walk away. I was told again that no matter what I do, no matter what eBay says, they will never close the account. To this day, my eBay account I "closed" back in 2006 is still there. They were right.

Ebay sellers have no rights- you have been warned. Some have had no issues, some have had nightmares- the choice is yours.

Thanks Peter,

I haven't made the decision to use them yet. Alternatives to using PayPal is something I am also looking into. I found one, National Merchant Bancard, that was recommended by a site dedicated to providing a list of PayPal alternatives. Of course, Intuit offers a service they say is an alternative to PayPal. Right now I only accept checks or money orders, but if I can process online credit card purchases that would be good. Not sure if I can then use eBay, but who knows.

Paypal is either your best friend or worst enemy. I use them for purchasing all the time, it is smooth and painless, and the one time I did have an issue Paypal was quick to refund my money. It is rare that I am a seller, and I've never sold anything on Paypal so I am yet to have an issue with a buyer that required Paypal to intervene.

If you have an online store, look into accepting Google Checkout. I've heard nothing but good things about it, and I always click the Google button if I am given it as a choice.

Sounds like all the problems are linked to eBay transactions using PayPal.

I gave up eBay years ago because it's total crap.

PayPal has been great for me, I never have any problem getting a person on the phone.

Best of luck, this argument has gone circular.

I've had pleasant and unpleasant dealings with both of them. In the end, I still use both of them consistently, though I don't sell on eBay though. Paypal is still my prefered method of both receiving and paying money. The paypal fees alone aren't any different than the credit card fees a seller has to pay on a transaction which they accept a credit card. Square has the same fees (3%). every time I tried to send money as a "gift", I had to pay the 3% fee, so I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or y'all aren't paying attention. As a seller on eBay, you do have to be seasoned well and be cautious. I have received $800 payments that were reversed the next day due to a stolen account. Fortunately I didn't ship the item already.

BTW RedBuell, as far as the principal of their non-allowance of gun sales, that has nothing to do with our 2nd amendment rights. It just makes sense. There are background checks that people have to go through to get guns and ammo currently, and if people could just buy them online without going through these, it would be illegal. I'm not saying that I support the background checks, but they are the law, and we can't expect an online garage sale to skip this step any more than we can expect to buy a gun in the local grocery store (think United, not Wal-Mart).

Been a PayPal early adopter as a buyer - and using it to accept payments as a business since 2007.

As a consumer, PayPal is your friend. Not much else to it. You can mostly put your paranoia aside.

As a seller, PayPal (and eBay for that matter) blow ass. We put up with these entities because that's where consumers go. The burden is usually on the seller. Not gonna go into insane eBay & PayPal war stories. Every seller of any appreciable quantity has them.

Either way, do it. If you're a seller, it opens up your business to more buyers. As a buyer it's a drop dead simple decision.

There are no background check requirements for the private transfer of firearms and ammunition- only for retail sales. A private transaction between two individuals is not regulated by the federal government. Only FFL holders are required to do background checks.

Having worked in the firearms industry for years, it became relatively easy to spot corporations with anti-Second Amendment agendas. They usually hide behind policies with keywords like "our employee's safety/security", "our customer's safety/security", or "due to possible liability issues". EBay/PayPal can restrict anything they want, I have no problem with that. But because I'm aware of why they have these policies, this is one of the reasons why I choose not to do business with them, and let anyone who's interested know why.

It's about information...
and principles. Your personal standards may vary.

I still don't understand the correlation here. Probably at least 70% of eBay business is companies that are not private sales and would have to do the background checks anyway. But to each their own I guess. On the other hand, I don't see why a person would not use services like these on that principal anyway unless they are planning on selling guns. I don't withhold a sale of Buell parts to a person that I presume to be a (or even is an outspoken) democrat, even though we have very different political views.

Edit- I just noticed that you have been in the firearms business for a while, so that does explain your personal conviction against them, sorry. Like I said, to each their own.

Never had a problem with paypal in the 10 years I've been using that or ebay. Sure they got somewhat of a monopoly, but it works well enough for me.
