I disagree with you Char on the Electoral College.
I agree that we shouldn't be the worlds police. There are problems with not doing so too. I don't want the US to be Imperialistic. And we certainly aren't a competent Empire. If we're going to go that way, we should do it right.

If we put all the T Baggers in Texas and all the OWS Lunatics in California and let both succeed from the union.....
This was EXACTLY what the Framers of the Constitution intended. Not the succession part, but the ability of each state to determine how that state is to be run.
The intent was to have a fairly weak central government and strong state governments. That way the majority of the policy is local.
If you wanted to run a communist state and the majority of the population in that state wanted that form of government, you could have it. If the next state over wanted something else, what the communist state did or didn't do was of no concern.
Policies were intended to be vetted at the state level. Good ideas could be replicated by other states. Bad ideas could be replaced without infecting other states. |

What ? Many Union soldiers came from Wisconsin. They staged at Camp Randall in Madison before shipping out. They also had a Confederate POW camp there. Unless you are talking about some other big war, like the American Revolution... |

Hell, I bet the rest of Illinois would beat up Chicago.
Nah, I doubt that Illinois has much for Tennessee or any of the southern states for that matter.
We got smart and started importing heavy industry instead of growing cotton. 
It'll be different next time around. |
