Scary. Exhilarating. Amazing. Mind Boggling. And, of course, Humbling.
Even with me holding on for dear life back there, he was tipping in at nearly twice the speed I was comfortable with ON MY OWN CR. The braking, and downshifting... my God the deceleration! I was doing handstands on the handles welded to the tank as we set up for the corner!
If you ever get the chance, at STAR motorcycle school or otherwise, throw all things aside and disregard any plans you may have.... climb onto the back of his bike and hold on tight. The most amazing thing I have ever experienced!
You'd be allowed on FT. You remember Pete? He did it, this is the way he described it to me.
"I'm standing in line and the guy that went before me pulls into the pit jumps off the back, removes his helmet, and looks at us waiting in line. He don't have that excited look on his face though. He looks like he just skirted the dance floor with Satan. He is pail white, breathing heavy, and shaking. And I think to myself, What a P#$$^! Pridmore signals me to get on the back, we due a few things and were off. 100+ wheelies down the back straight, diving into corners at angles I thought we were having a wreck at, diving in at speeds I thought maybe he had a seizure and forgot to slow down for. So we pull into the pits, I jump off and remove my helmet, look at the waiters with a look that I know I just danced around the Satan. But they look at me with the look of P#$$^!" He says that later him and Jason were talking about the ride and Jason said I heard you laughing and carrying on so I just went faster. To which Pete reply's " I wasn't laughing I was screaming in terror" Now if you remember Pete is a pretty good size guy who is a blacksmith by trade, hearing that from him was pretty funny. But he also said he would do it again in a heart beat!
I have been trying to get my girlfriend to ride 2 up on my ninja ZX10R and i got a vinxxgrip passenger grab rail. It attaches to the tank. Here is a link for the grip.
It sure looks like a bird! I can't be a passenger on someone elses bike it scares me to much at high speeds. At lower speeds it would be ok but i like to control my own bike thanks. But that looks like it would fun???
Years ago I rode behind Jason's old man up in Watkins Glen. He was SCARY SMOOTH. If you closed your eyes, you had NO idea when he was accelerating, braking, or shifting gears. If you dared to open your eyes, you could easily see his hands actively working ALL the controls but I never felt ANYTHING sitting in the pillion seat.
Even more amazing, I remember him approaching my braking points and thinking "Okay now... here is where I'd be slowing down... any second he'll start... HOLY SH**!!!" and then it felt like I had to lift my head so it wouldn't hit the curbing.
Most amazing experience I've ever had on a motorcycle. I also remember being back on my own bike and pushing harder than I'd ever done before. Jason (he worked with Reg back in those days) came FLYING past me on the turn on the outside WITH A PASSENGER ON THE BACK. He gave me a quick nod and a "thumbs up" as he did so, too. I'll never forget that as long as I live.
I took STAR this past summer at NJMP. Jason was as cool and laid back as I remembered him from years ago. It was also fun seeing a guy as big as Greg White wrap himself around that Suzuki GSXR, too...
Still NOTHING like what Mamola put HIS passengers through, Matt. Although wheelying off the line with MJ on the back probably wasn't all that hard to do...
Hey all- I remember a while back, somewhere on BW, seeing a European racing Buell (team Pegasus?), set up with those fancy passenger grab anchors- THAT was a BADASS machine, gave me the heebies just thinking about it... anyone able to find it?
