It's time to replace my dell studio 15. I've been looking at the Dell xps 17, and the HP Dv7. Price range is up to $1100... Any thoughts or opinions welcomed. |

There are many versions of the DV7, both various store stock and custom built. What components do you want and what do you want to do? I have the DV7 4065DX from Bestbuy with blue ray and AMD. The only option I wish I could add is bluetooth. |

If possible get us links to the specific laptops you are looking at, each one has many variants. Either way, both should be solid machines, the higher end models like the ones you are looking at have better components and in general are built better. |

Let's just say HP is probably not the best way to go right now... |

Not locked in on all the options, mostly just want the basic goodies... Backlit keys, <500gb hd, 6gb ram or better, HD+ is fine for screen, fingerprint scanner would be nice (only cuz I got used to it on this old Dell), def want good speakers... OH. What do I need (besides box at TV)to stream to TV? does that use bluetooth? Kinda tired of the 25ft long HDMI cable... |

Wide selection out there with that except for the finger print reader, that seems to be hit and miss in terms of availability.

That HDMI cable is the cheapest, easiest, and most reliable method. While it isn't impossible to use a 3rd party box to do that, it will still be doing all the same things your laptop would have to do, then you add performance and reliability issues with getting the content from the laptop to the box to the TV. I would assume it would use either WiFi or wired Ethernet, as current Bluetooth specs do not provide enough bandwidth even in perfect conditions to play HD video. |

I have a DV7 that wont charge or run on AC power. P.O.S.! I'll never buy an HP again. |
