i have come down with a pretty nasty one the past few days, all of the guys at work tell me to use emergen c, i just started using it yesterday, no results yet at least it doesn't taste all that bad. usually if i cant sleep and i take a shot or two of whiskey helps knock me out.
I take a HOT SCREAMING bath..the kind that turns your skin pink and dive under the blankets for 8 hours. Usually feel like a new one in the morning..........

Zinc and heavy doses of vitamin C for the duration. If I've done something like catch a chill outside for too long, or I'm really tired, I take echinacea (immune system booster, say the herbologists) as soon as possible, if I think it might just maybe be possible that I might be coming down with a cold. Tons of fluids: water, juice, herbal teas with honey.
Always burns me clean. I also second the Vitamin C - my winter drink is those packets of hot spiced cider you can get like hot chocolate. Lots of C in those, I drink a ton of 'em when its chilly out, and I rarely get colds even working/riding outdoors all year long.
Gargle whiskey or vodka. Take a pinch of salt (I use Utah sea salt, the pink kind) and hold it in the back of your throat until it dissolves. Critters don't like salt. Drink a lot of water, or clear fluids. If it's a head cold, use a neti pot 2-3 times a day. Take some kind of pain reliever for the body aches.
My Mum always took hot milk with a healthy dose of Scotch & a spoonful of honey in it.
Another remedy I have used is a 50/50 mix of orange juice & boiling water with a large dose of Stolichnaya or Wybrova Blue Label, & a spoonful of honey for the throat.
Using these remedies while driving or operating heavy machinery may cause serious injury or DEATH.
But you won't care because the "nightnurse" will have kicked in by then, whoohoo.
Always read the label, if in doubt consult a professional.
I'm in with the the spiced cider, Ratbuell. Maybe add a little bit of rum, some cloves, nutmeg. Yummy and dang, when's Autumn gonna be here?!
Usually break out the neti pot when family members pick up a cold at school or work. Rinse those sinuses. If that fails and you catch it, and worse, it lingers then starts to morph into a sinus infection, try drinking apple cider vinegar with hot water and honey.

I can't believe I got no comments on my post. Mullien is what has been used for a long time by people who basicly whipped colds and flue. I have to say that, contrary to the OP's question, I have not used it. I don't get sick much.

For years, I was a Vitamin C fan. Hard to overdose on, you just whizz away excess. Can't say it did any good, but did notice I'd get a cold when I ran out.....
Of course, it's gone in 5 days without zinc, too.
colds ( getting over one now, slowly ) are caused by viruses. While AIDS research gives us some hope that by the 22nd century we will be able to defeat a virus. ( other than giving vaccine to everyone until, years later, the virus goes, hopefully, extinct )
Until then, forget it. Going to take 5-9 days, depending on several factors. How strong is your immune system? Smoker? Going to take time off so you don't spread the virus, or keep working to get paid?
Best advice? Vitamins don't hurt. Wash your hands. A lot. Change your toothbrush. ( it's probably shot anyway.... and you just keep reintroducing the same germs back in ) Plenty of fluids, take whatever you want, or not, to ease the symptoms. That's about it.
After having just been on an island for 7 days, I can honestly say that rum doesn't get rid of a cold. I still have the same cold that I'd forgotten I left with!
