Hey good folks of BW, I seek advice: Who has experience selling heirloom gold jewelry? I hate to have to do it, but circumstances may force me to. (Things would be completely different if I could sell my '77 Shovelhead, but what the hey.) Bueller? Thanks in advance for any insight here- I'll be back to the thread later this afternoon when I'm home from work. |

hopefully you will be able to find someone that is interested in the piece itself otherwise it's worth the value of the metal(s) present. stones go cheap on resale... |

If you HAVE to sell it shop around. My neighbor is a jeweler who happens to be a good friend and he's the highest around as far as scrap gold. Remember they'll all want to make some money on the deal just some want more than others. IIRC gold prices change more than once a day. Last I heard it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $1800 an ounce but that was a couple to three weeks ago. From what I've seen hanging around with him the pawn shops will be your worst bet, chain stores next then your mom and pop jewelers. That's around here anyway, may be different in your neck of the woods. |

Before you sell it for its weight value get a reputable dealer to look at it. It may be that the value of the piece is higher than the value of the gold/stone weight. If it has a higher intrinsic value than its scrap weight you may want to consider a consignment sale. YMMV. Chris C |

Depends on how much spare time you have. Craigslisting the pieces is only going to bring pain. Consider consignment sale at a good jeweler - especially at the jeweler who did the original work. |

Thanks all- you've basically reiterated what I've been told. Just got home, in the regular mail there was one of those mass-mail coupon books, and a gold buyer advertising from both major shopping malls in Knoxville. They had a "20% higher price" coupon, but I couldn't help but thinking: Given that they are operating out of a dang mall, their overhead must be out of sight, "20%" or not. We shall see... |

Slaughter has the best recommendation. You will get hurt anyway you do it. |
