After finishing my classes I was headed back to my bike at Arizona State. When I got there, I noticed the bike next to me had the ignition key in the helmet lock still. I called the ASU PD (ASU has their own PD), I told them I wanted to leave a note on the bike, and take the key to the ASU Police Station. They said that sounded good, and then asked me to wait for their cop to show up. As I was heading home, I had time to wait. Some 30 minutes or so later the cop showed up. The first thing he does is run the plate and make sure the bike had a parking permit. He got a call back that the bike was not stolen. He told me his Sergeant said just leave it as it was if the bike wasn't stolen. I was fairly upset at this point, having waited over 30 minutes only to have this cop say he intended to just leave the keys in the bike. Next he suggests locking them in the tail, perfect, except that you need the key to open the tail... Then he puts the key in the helmet. I tell him that I have had a helmet stolen from ASU, and he mentions that a large amount of bikes have been stolen recently. I said it would kill me if my bike was stolen, and I wanted to make sure the owner and only the owner got his key back. He tells me to leave and said he would take care of it. I understand police for a college campus operate differently than normal police, but I guess "protect and serve" is not one of their mottos. They only care about the bike if it is stolen, but don't care if it is available to steal... I found this greatly irritating, and I just wanted to get it off my chest. On a side note, I have found Phoenix police to be some of the best officers I have ever dealt with (though I haven't had the occasion to meet them much :P) Is this normal behavior for an officer? If they weren't going to do anything, why not let me bring in the key in the first place? |

its ASU nuff said.....GO WILDCATS! LOL But in all seriousness, its a college cop...even then though theres no reason that they shouldnt of responded accordingly to make sure the bike was kept safe Jake |

If they are like the Peace Officers where I work (a designation that is only to limit their pay vs. a police officer) they have access to the students' schedules and they could have grabbed the keys and brought it to that student's next class. Or simply left a note saying the keys had been brought to HQ and go collect them. You might have been better off pretending they were on the ground near the cycle and brought them to security and suggested that they were near the cycle with plate number XYZ. |
