NEVER buy a used vehicle from Slaughter!

Before buying another vehicle, I usually put almost a quarter million miles on the odo. Means I'm buying another vehicle every decade or more.

My 99 Stratus has developed a tranny seal leak and it has ONLY 230,000 miles. Though it pains me to do it, I guess I'll have to suck it up and ditch it with low mileage.

The trusty sh!tbox Toyota SR5 is still running sweet and is my monthly-go-racing ride (25 miles to Willow Springs from our door) but it's time for a "REAL" pickup.

They Toyota HAS seen duty at the racetrack over the past decade but it's just kinda small for all but the short-haul kid of work

Got my eye on an 08 4-door F150 from Enterprise Car sales. Might end up driving it home tomorrow. Cool thing is they allow 7 day cash refund (if you don't like the color) - and they warranty the engine/drive line for 12 months.

The little Saturn has almost 260,000 miles - but she still runs sweet.

That SR5 is always going to be the perfect in-town beater (only 217,000 miles so it has 10 more years of weekend only usage before I'll sell) but the big pickup... The pickup is "NEEDED"

Anybody else ever put miles on cars or do they get traded in with the first parking lot rash?

Then there's the toyhauler next when the floor is finished.

We don't even start looking for a replacement until there's 200,000 on the ODO.

Our cars usually go POOF into a pile of rust in the driveway.

I haven't been alive long enough to have this problem. I usually end up selling my vehicles to the insurance company.

I get a new truck every ten years whether I need it or not. Still got 2 years left on my '04 Dakota 4x4.
I may just keep that indefinitely.

You are not alone... 170K on the Datsun B210, 200K on the '78 pontiac Sunbird (think Vega wagon)only car I wish I could have back!, 140k on the '67 Rustang (you know if you've ever restored one!), 270K on the '86 Cherokee, 170K on the current ride... '94 grand Cherokee. All were bought used and resold in good running condition. But I am in the mood for a new ride and am actually shopping around.

I put 190,000 on my last truck (1991 Ford Ranger). I would have kept driving it, but we inherited a newer truck from my father-in-law and my mother-in-law wanted us to use it rather than sell it. I have a 1993 Volvo with about 215,000 on it now, but the tranny's getting flaky in it. Otherwise, it runs as well as the day we got it.

My $400 cherokee ('92) is running like a champ with a little over 230k. Granted, I replaced a piston when I bought it and I did put a radiator in it...but for the money? Lovin it. My wrangler is just a baby at 160k : )

The 1rst, last and only new vehicle I ever bought was in 1976. It was a real shock to me several years ago, when I realized new trucks cost more than I paid for my house. Now decent used ones do. I believe in getting every mile possible out of them.
We've had a '96 Tahoe and a '96 Yukon for a while. The Tahoe is at about 247,000 and getting ratty, but going strong. The Yukon was just broken in at a around 160,000 and the engine laid down recently just as I topped out on Monteagle Mountain dragging the Boy Scout trailer piled full of summer camp gear.
That helped me warm up a bit to the mini van my Mother-in-law gave us a while back. I usually drive them till they just won't go any more and park them in the yard.
I'm agonizing now over the Yukon. It's really not worth fixing, but it's in pretty good shape otherwise. If I put it out between my '77 Blazer and my '76 Bronco, it'll make them look bad. ......................and then............there's Becky's thoughts about my yard art

99 chevy lumina with 217000. All I do is regular maintenance, and I figure it has a ways to go. Runs great. No problems. Gonna be looking for a small truck soon. Ill run that into the ground too.

In 1987 I bought a brand new K5 blazer which I drove for over 300k miles. The replacement, an 01 Tahoe had 229k when I dumped it. I still have a 1970 GMC I bought in '84 with 159k on it. It's well over 300k now. Most cars I have owned had 100k on the clock when I bought them. Several have gone to the wrecking yard when I was done.

We drive ours into the ground as well. As long as there are no issues with dependability, we see no reason to have the latest and greatest.

And car payments SUCK!

My first Ranger an 84 I bought from my Mom after my Dad died had 302,000 when I rolled it. It was replaced with a 90 Ranger that now has 262,000. I'm going to replace it before it dies because I tow a trailer as part of my work.

Everyone who knows me, knows cars come to me to die!!!! I have the carcasses to prove it. The '96 Merc Pillager oops Villager is over 240K, '88 Dakota 4x4 is at 230K and the 2 newest gifts both have over 130K, '98 Exploder er Explorer and a '99 Lincoln.

There are a few others hiding in the woods waiting to be resurrected and with a little extra cash they will be.

I think I really like the challenge of bringing them back.

I keep my cars longer now than I used to. I don't actually have a car now though. I haven't since 2003. I sold my truck to buy my FXDX. Wow, until I just typed that, I hadn't realized it had been that long since I had a personal car. My wife has a car though and my job provides me with a car to drive to and from work (no personal use allowed though). I've always really liked cars, especially muscle cars. I can't believe I don't have one.

My wife's car is only a couple of years old, but I expect we will keep it a good while. Her previous car was an Explorer that we put over 100,000 miles on, which I guess isn't many to you guys, but was a lot more than we had ever put on a car before.

I do like my wife to have a newer car. She sometimes takes long trips on her car by herself and I like to feel like her car will get her there and back without any troubles. Plus, I like our cars to look good and work like they did when we first bought it. On modern cars there are just so many things to break, like power windows and door locks and so on that cost stupid money to fix when they start breaking. As a result, I tend to not want to fix those things, but then it starts bugging me. Maybe if I was a better mechanic or even enjoyed working on a car I'd keep them longer.

Car payments SUCK!

97 F150 4X4 extended cab with an 8ft box, 190,000 and some odd miles

2005 Chevy Cavalier 4 door stick, 170,000 + miles

I had a 89 VW diesel Jetta with 325,00 miles on it, it was still running great and in good shape but the ex-wife refused to drive it so I sold it to a neighbor lady so she could train police dogs in it. That was a mistake to let that car go.

That is the kiss of death for any advertised car. I know what my wife does to vehicles, so I walk away from any "lady driven" cars. Every fender is bent and the oil hasn't been changed in 42,000 miles.

I usually buy a Jeep Cherokee when it comes off lease, and drive it till it's ten years old, or starts getting unreliable - usually about 150K miles.

My current 2004 Cherokee I bought with a salvage title, nice rebuild with only 15K miles on it. Has 65K now and only problems were bum starter motor, and wire to door failing: well known problem. Me and my buddy Gerry fixed both, (mostly Gerry, of course).

I am thinking of getting an 2011 Grand Cherokee when they come off lease in three years.

Got the brochure already.

My oldest vehicle has the least amount of miles. Our '92 Toyota pickup has <86K miles. My '96 Avalon just rolled 175K and the wife's '02 Sienna has around 92K. No car payments means I can have a bike payment: ) I'll drive a 15 yr. old car any day to keep my bike(s) around and I won't feel TOO bad when the kids start driving and ding a bumper or two.

I've had two vehicles with 4 wheels- First an 87 Oldsmobile Calais my great grandma gave my sister and I our senior year of high school. We both drove the snot out of that and I finally killed the transmission on it on the side of I-80 heading to Iowa one winter. They are not made for towing a trailer with a bike.

I currently have a '97 S-10 that I got in 2002, had 38k on it when I got it, has 150k on it now. Mechanically good, but is starting to show it's age, and it doesn't really get driven much at all. Doesn't owe me any money, so when she let's go, we'll start the process all over again.

Heather has a year old car, has 30k on it in that time. I'm thining we need to get a nicer truck to drive back home with the dog and a beater for her to put the miles on...

My current Expedition is about 140,000 miles, still has aprox another 100,000 miles to go!
My 99 Expedition got totaled by hail with 216,000 on the odo. Still ran great.
My 92 Dodge has a couple hundred thousand on it, rusty but runs good.
So, yeah, I get my money's worth out of them.

If I don't get at least 150,000 from a vehicle, I feel cheated. 200,000 is better.

Last vehicle was a 99 Toyota Tacoma that I liked a lot. It had 170,000 miles on it when older son wrapped it around a tree. Only repairs were a starter, 02 sensor and an alternator. Got good mileage and ran great until the front end got pushed halfway back to the front seat.

Currently own an 05 Rav4. Got it with 27,000 miles in February of 2008 and it has 88,000 now. Hardly broken in. Not sure if I'll keep it though. In the short time I've had it, it's needed 4 new brake rotors, an alternator and a new windshield. Now the warning light for the air bag is on. I buy Toyotas for the reliability but this one hasn't made the grade.

Maybe I need to get another pickup.

2002 Ford Focus 256K
1994 Buick Roadmaster 165K
1982 GMC 3/4 ton 150K??

The Focus is running strong as ever but really unpleasant to drive compared to the Buick. I have been looking at slightly used Foci, but the price just takes my breath away. I'll run it until it dies. Then I'll take the seats for my MGB project and sell the rest for parts and scrap. I will be buried in the Buick.

My 2000 F150 is starting to leave little piles of rust everywhere I park, but only 160k on the odometer. I figure when there's nothing substantial left on the frame to weld to it'll be time for another truck.

I usually end up selling my vehicles to the insurance company.

I have 2 very obvious solutions to this issue frank, and perhaps there are others.

#1. Stop trying to park your Buells in the trunks of innocent Honda accords.

#2. Stop using your Buells as tabogans in blinding NY snow storms.

Actually, now that i rethink those.....keep up the good work Frogman!
