I saw where Apple recently passed Exxon Mobil as the largest corporation as far as market value.

I wonder if the same folks who have been hammering on the "big evil oil company" will do the same with Apple. Somehow I suspect not. If it were Microsoft, they'd be all over it. It's comical.

If not a troll, then the label of "opinion " will do fine while I wander up and down the remnants of America offering curb service to all the enemies rolling through and casting aspersions on decency, reality, and the comfort of my collective beliefs. No offense to them, but many ideas generated from the Cheshire cat crowd cannot go without response.

"Backing off and fighting another day isn't really an option around here though, is it? "

That is exactly what it is. It is called risk mitigation. You never attack the enemy where they are strongest, where they are the thickest, when they are in the full operational mode. And if you are of an enterprising sort, you never attack a hardened target. It is exactly how we won the American Revolution - and it is exactly how Afghanistan has defended and defeated the two biggest superpowers in the last 30 years (look at the cost, look at the return, look at our current status; we did not win that 'war'. - and respect to all the troops on the ground - it was fought entirely too much out of Washington, rather than the theater requirements that war needed) We will be there for another 15 years with either troops, aid, or 'security forces'. Nation building should start on the domestic shores. This administration doesn't see it that way, and neither did the last one.

I don't have any John Connar Fantasies. I am not out to organize, train, arm or fight a resistance. My goal is to protect me and mine; to live to fight another more opportune day.

For those of you that have prepared - great, good on you. For those that haven't, look to Katrina, and the recent Midwest Flooding and ask why you HAVEN'T.

the government is not your friend in these times, they are not 'here to help'.
spend some time out on Grants.gov
your key word program parameters to watch for are:
(1) economic competitiveness and revitalization; (2) social equity, inclusion, and access to opportunity; (3) energy use and climate change; and (4) public health and environmental impact.

if you feel good about the government after finding, reading, and understanding those - you are part of the problem

City, you remind me of my last 2 1/2 years of the Cold War, ostensibly a student and writer, shifting around and traveling on odd schedules to Eastern Europe. Not anyone's government operation, but the Western end of a network taking advantage of perestroika and glasnost for members of certain Eastern dissidents. First rule: keep to yourself and tell no one, then you can't be sold out or stopped. I wrote a screen play about it, but shopped it when it was old news; too bad.

We have a remote farm with artesian water. Still, I fear that in my current role of "domesticated house cat," I'll go in the first wave. Too bad, again. The feral cats survive. Those who work alone, at low cost, out of the limelight, they get things done. The Iron Curtain fell, not from the West, but because soviet women wanted better fashion accessories. No, I'm not kidding.

Stay feral, City.

Some day one of us in old age will be on a trek to the farthest reaches of Ukraine, past the pavement, up into a remote mountain community, directed to the City farmstead, and a well-accessorized babushka will great you at the front of the house, you say, "City?" and she waves toward the barn. Out there you find an aging Yank draining off a modicum of potato vodka from his still, and smiling a greeting as he holds out a welcoming dram.

Or, we'll all be dead. We'll see.

I like my chances overseas better.

So I think almost everyone empathizes with Mexicans who cross the border looking for a better life, don't we. Of course some of us just think it should be done in a legal way.

Why should we think any less of someone who is leaving the US to find a better life in the Ukraine? Are we supposed to be so blindly patriotic that we really just can't imagine that things could be better elsewhere? I'm sorry but that's just blindly following like sheep.

Personally I prefer a form of patriotism where we build a country with opportunity that will attract those with vision and ambition to make the country great. Unfortunately these people are being demonized and penalized lately in this country in an effort to spread the wealth that they have created. The fruits of this are now being born, and we can see it in those who will look for where opportunity lies. If someone finds that opportunity in the Ukraine, don't blame him... Don't blame the Ukraine... Blame those that have changed the US from being the place where these people seek to locate to build great fortunes. We are however becoming the place where people come to seek meager hand outs on the backs of those with vision and ambition.

Sorry Sifo, I was addressing our noble Fifth Columnist. And Fatty, I was paraphrasing what I've been reading throughout this thread.
Now, back to the topic at hand; I believe it was the USSR that had ethnic cleansings. I don't recall any point in US History where America killed off large numbers of people in Concentration Camps or Gulags. Nor were people rounded up and shipped to Siberia to slowly starve or freeze to death.
You can call me a Troll if you want to, but I see the United States as one of the best places on earth to live; and when Custard Heads do nothing but belittle it while praising a country noted for Pogroms and a political system that grinds its own citizens into the mud, it becomes really annoying.
Who is the real Troll here, anyway? While he brags about his survival skills, and how he's prepared for the breakdown of society, and brags openly that he will not contribute toward making the US a better place to live, I'm busy working and paying loans off, and doing other things to make my city a little safer, friendlier, and more decent to live in.

Awesome.

Pwnzor: This is Troll 1, here to say I don't think Troll 2 is a troll either. I don't agree with him, but I see his point. It is kind of the "if you don't love it leave it" attitude turned on its head to say "if you leave it, you must not love it." Just because you think someone is wrong (and I do think he is wrong) doesn't make him Troll 2.

Signed,

Troll 1.

Check your Native American History before you make a statement like this.

"Nor were people rounded up and shipped to Siberia to slowly starve or freeze to death."

This is true. We stole them from their own lands and brought them here to work to death for free.

I love my country too, but I don't overlook her history.

You have to admit, the Troll 2 picture is funny as hell... I stumbled across it, and I couldn't not post it.

Lightstick has ~100 posts in ~3 years, several of them today are laced with vitriolic fervor... that pretty much puts it on par with troll behavior.

I wasn't really calling you a troll, but I found it humorous since the previous conversation had touched on it, and then Lightstick jumps in here with his crappy attitude...

Of course, the fact that I had to explain this in detail due to your being hypersensitive to the subject sort of points back to the original implication found earlier in the thread...

"I don't recall any point in US History where America killed off large numbers of people in Concentration Camps or Gulags. "

Ever hear of the Trail of Tears? How quite possibly they were removed from their land, marched across the country by foot to new 'reservations', given 'aid' of infected small pox blankets ...died by the thousands, and eradicated full entire Nations ? There are now only 5 'certified' tribes remaining of that treaty.

History is fun, you should read it sometime
My Great Grandmother was Choctaw - she ran away from the res at 13; at her death at the age of 89; she still had an extradiction claim back for her in standing.

Nope, never happen here. ....
or gee, just down the road on Bainbridge Island where the Army ran an 'internment' camp for Japanese Americans - again after stealing their land, confisgating their accounts, separating families, and imprisioning both naturalized immigrants and native born citizens. Just one of several on the west coast.
Nope, never happen here....

and maybe you missed the portion of me saying that I was in Bosnia, Kosovo, Moldavia, Herzegovina and portions of Slovakia... and the most recent stint in Uzbekistan. I am no stranger to the policies, practices and protocols of EPW treaties, processing camps or ethnic clensing.
and I don't like the way the wind is blowing

What, absent the protections of the Constitution, prevents Concentration Camps and Gulags here?

Do you see the protections of the Constitution being strengthened or weakened?

Well, I finally watched the lead video. I found it a bit amusing and full of paranoia. The narrator is apparently unfamiliar with railroad service facilities. We have several similar facilities on my railroad, so please let me explain.
It's a railroad yard, inherited by Amtrak from a former passenger railroad . There are large buildings for servicing trains. Some may not be in use, but it costs money to demolish them, so they remain.
The large paved areas are use for material storage. Materials such as grade crossings panels, ties, signals, wheelsets for rolling stock, you get the idea. This is big stuff and it takes up lots of space.
The Armed Forces equipment is easy to explain: it was old, surplus equipment that Amtrak needed and acquired at a reasonable price. They just never got around to repainting it, that was a low priority for them given their low budget. We have a crane very similar to the one in the video, and our yard locomotives are of a similar vintage but came from the railroads we acquired.
As for security, compare it to airport security, or a car dealer's storage yard. Some of the material has high scrap value and the railroads have been victim to theft and vandalism. I just don't see it as a detention / processing facility.
Check this link: http://www.trainweb.org/chris/beech.html
for more information on the railroad shops.
And if you haven't already, read "Atlas Shrugged".

Would you consider the possibility that I was just watching casually until my tolerance for bullshit was exceeded?
Of course, I've noticed a tendency here to consider and accuse anyone who disagrees with the party line to be a Troll and/or a Liberal.
Mr. Bastard; You need to work on your reading comprehension There were two separate sentences. The one addressed to you stated, "And Fatty, I was paraphrasing what I've been reading throughout this thread."
I do not consider the United States a shithole. Far from it I've done a bit of International travel, and there's no place I'd rather live.
I do not hate either political party. I do not fully endorse either party either. I do not see the US on such a doomsday path as many here do.
I do get pissed when I see my Country constantly viewed as inferior to almost everywhere else. Especially when I've seen other countries.
We have problems, like everywhere else, but we work toward a solution. And the US government does not resort to "Ethnic Cleansing" Camps.
