I was a MSF rider coach at the oldest MSF site in the state of TN. Coaching since 1982. We regularly coach 2 classes 12-24 new riders each weekend from February to the end of November. Last week we did not know that it would be our last. The site for the state supported program is at Nashville State Community College. After almost 30 years of success, today we were informed by the College that "lines in the parking lot confuse the students." As far as we know now, because of this single issue, the College officials will not let us continue the class. The program at that site is over. If your students can't navigate in a parking lot because of some spray painted dots, don't you think it would behoove you to help educate motorcyclists how to avoid these idiots on the street? So far our only plan is to begin a letter writing campaign. We might need some help from fellow motorcyclist who believe in the value of MSF courses. Stay tuned to the tread, if you would be willing to help. Our website: http://www.learntoride.org/ |

WTF over? Matt, that sounds absolutely ridiculous! I've got a good buddy who's the coordinator for Rider's Edge here in Maryville, I'll see what he thinks about it... Keep us posted! |

You should see one of the ranges I teach on Its a parking lot for the High School Its a practice lot for the High School Band and its a MSF BRC/ERC range Its got more lines than a 80's party I think your problem comes from someone has a bur up their butt about Motorcycles and is using the students as a scapegoat. |

Don't go too hard on them because they might re-open in the future. I'm teaching again at a school that shut the program out and 8 years later I'm teaching there again. This is the third time they have done this. |

People generally have two reasons for what they do: 1. The reason they give to everyone. 2. The real reason. Sounds like you got the reason they give to everyone. |

It's Nashville Tech. It ain't Harvard. Their students may indeed be confused by lines in the parking lot. |

That stinks. Gotta agree with Babired on not going to hard on them. Lines are repaintable. Any other complaints about the classes being held where they were? Unless you are fortunate enough to have the company own the property you hold classes on, there's usually some level of conflict between the people involved with the class, and shop owners, customers, property management, or people who use the adjacent property for other purposes (i.e. frisbee golfers). In some cases a mutually advantageous solution is found. In others, nada. We've had two leases sour on us in the past couple years in Florida for some of the reasons mentioned above, and we've banded together as coaches and located other ranges. Generally it takes months to get a location identified and brought to the point of getting approved by the state. But each time we've gone thru it, we've found better opportunities. The current situation we arrived in after re-tooling post-shutdown is SUCH an improvement over the one we came from. One door closes, another opens. We landed on our feet and learned from it. Are there other potential ranges in that general area? Good luck! (Message edited by fltwistygirl on August 09, 2011) |

Being that my GF was attending Harvard, I can safely say after dealing with her classmates that you are really selling Nashville Tech short! |

College of Southern Maryland shares the range space with the truck driving classes. Maybe you could talk to the professors over there and work behind the dean to get staff support. |

Cool- just took a look at the learntoride site, looks like Barker's got the hairy eyeball of the media looking into this... And- Barker, if you've not yet spoken with him, my buddy up here says you need to talk with John Milligan- he's the head cheese for the state of TN for MSF programs. Looking forward to hearing about the news article! Post a link to that if you can... |

The one where I work has also gone away this year, not sure if it was from lack of interest or some other reason. Last summer there were only like 2 or 3 classes, the year before about 10+ classes including day and evening and most of these were 5 day courses. They never let anyone park in that lot so I don't think it really mattered. Now that I think back, I have a feeling the pavement is in rough shape and may not have been up to standards for the classes. |

John Milligan has tried to help. The school will not meet with him. They told him if he has a problem, he can take it to the board of regents, a board that oversees higher education. He might be able to meet at thier next meeting in a few months. About the time the season is wraping-up. |

I saw a teaser ad about this topic on local channel 4... searched the website and found nothing then I come to BadWeb and find all the info... Ain't BadWeb great! I can get political updates, motorcycle reviews, local news, a joke or two now and then. Why would I venture elsewhere? |

Tom, lol, you're spot on there... other than the weather, I guess it IS all here on BW... Good on ya Barker- keep up the good fight! At first I thought they were allowing the completion of the season this year- that's REALLY underhanded that they just shut it down. Any chances youn's can find a new range and get set up soon? There's lotsa pavement there in Nashvegas... |
