Hey guys, im in the market for a new (or refurbished) camera, now as much as I'd like a fancy professional grade one, they are no where near my price range, however if you can point me in the direction of one it would be appreciated!
My price range is around 250 (at MAXIMUM) ive found some really good camera's out there for around 60-100$ (little older), but i honestly dont know what to look for, a simple point and shoot with above 10-12MP would be ideal.
Thanks for any help!! Jake
p.s.- idk if this is too vague but im open to suggestions.
For much less than 250 you can find a Canon ELPH series ultra-compact. Point and shoot, fits in the pocket. Great photos and long lasting battery. You can't go wrong.
Totally happy for normal camera and short videos with my Nikon Coolpix. Zooms, decent video, good pictures, two years no problems. Fits easily in my pocket. Quick and easy down loading.
Lumix LX3 and if you want to save more try to find an LX2 (older model) also very capable of great shots. I have tried many of the prosumer compacts and actually use a Ricoh GX200 which is great but rare to find.
Nikon coolpix at office max. at about half your limit. It is my pocket camera. I paid retail for the first one and $40 on craigslist for the second one for my son. My main camera is a Pentax kx at twice your limit. The camera that is with you will get used. My htc 4g Evo has an 8 mp camera.
Jake, I have a new Nikon S6100 and am happy with the quality of photos and video it takes. Good optics, excellent exposure control, nice lens range (the 35-mm equivalent of about 28-200 mm), easy and intuitive to use touch screen, one-button HD video, and LOVE the image stabilization - hand-held full-zoom pix taken while driving down the road in my truck look like they were shot from a tripod. Plus, fits in a shirt pocket so you're always ready for that Kodak moment.
...were taken with this camera (the earlier pix in the thread were shot with my older Nikon Coolpix 2100).
Here are a few more sample pix:
Kyle and Jim Corso (Jim is "Pdxs3t" here on the board), Sandy, Oregon, USA, June 2011. Even with the nasty backlighting, the S6100 nailed the exposure.
Hand-held full optical zoom, Mount St. Helens, Washington, USA
Ma Bueller, Silverdale, Washington, USA, June 2011
My daughter Brynn and grandson Jayden, Seabeck, Washington, USA, June 2011. Great example of the quality of photograph this camera is capable of taking.
Flowers for MaB, shot in very hot lighting, and I used a lot of zoom to throw the background out of focus (note Mom's oxygen bottle at bottom left...).
So, if I want to set up a camera at a starting line and run live video over a webcast for a few days, any ideas on an HD camera to try? I always ask the consultants first. Thanks.
Beautiful aircraft. Some people get vertigo or nauseated flying in formation.
I'll send your mom another m/c photo from Oz. My dad grew up way down Highway 9 in Fobes.

Moxnix, I've flown with my brother Doug (00T) many times over the years, but this was my first experience formation flying. Took a bit to get used to having other aircraft so frikkin' close.

Cool, thanks! Very much enjoyed this photo of your Dad that my Sis Sue forwarded via her cell phone:
Ferris, I thought you got a new camera... Great shots!
I've not looked at the S6100, but have been looking at the Nikon 7000. Would like to get a P&S to augment the beast that I carry around and maybe the 6100 fits the bill. not as many bells and whistles as the 7000, but a lot less of a price tag.
Thanks Alex. When I was in Joplin I plugged the memory card on my old Nikon and ran into the same problem I've had before: New Compact Flash cards write faster and are incompatible with the 2100. So there I am, on a cross-country road trip, without a camera. Not good. New S6100 to the rescue.
Haven't looked at the 7000; I'll Google it tonight after w*rk and get back to you.
