Chevrolet sold 149,005 cars in July. Of these, 125 were Volts. That's only .08% of cars sold. It appears that the feel-good enviros want somebody other than themselves to buy into this boondoggle. I wonder where GM got the money to remodel the Hamtramck plant? Talk about return on investment. http://tinyurl.com/3svfam8 |

Seems to me that he read the... Propaganda piece. It was published by GM, not the news media. It seems he has the facts straight, he's just not buying into the spin that GM is throwing against the wall. |

You must of missed that. It is a blog. Only about 100 copies of the car are available for sale sitting on a dealer lot, not many others can make those kinds of claims. It will be interesting to see how it does once full scale production comes begins for 2012 models. |

Yeah I did read it. Government Motors preemptively told the media that they may only sell 100 Volts in July so by selling 125 they beat their predictions by a whole 25%. Increased performance through lower expectations. So who thinks starting in January of 2012 they'll be able to sell 5000 a month? |

Oh, well a blog... GM-Volt.com, not affiliated with GM must be purely factual without spin. So did they sell 125 of these things or not? |

Look up the numbers for yourself if you don't believe. The Volt dealer supply is nearly depleted, the dealers have been requesting several times as many Volts as they have been able to get. |

Well, GM has bet millions, if not billions. How many would they sell if the price of each vehicle wasn't underwritten by the American taxpayer? They're shooting for 60,000 a year world-wide with 45,000 of those in the US. Ain't gonna happen. To be fair, we shouldn't count vehicles bought by fed, state and local govts who rarely consider the actual cost of owning a vehicle. Fleet sales to people like Pepsi/Frito Lay are there just to show how environmentally conscious they are, regardless of the practicality of the car. But I'll bet $100 just for fun on total sales alone. Check back with me in Jan of 2013 and I'll give you my PayPal account address. |

Fleet sales to people like Pepsi/Frito Lay are there just to show how environmentally conscious they are, regardless of the practicality of the car. And if the public's perception that the company is "greener" equates to increased sales, then it's a positive ROI even if it costs a little more to operate than something else. Also, not sure which company wouldn't look at cost of ownership when approving a fleet vehicle acquisition. It may not be the end all, but it counts, believe me. Regardless, a sold car is a sold car - why should it matter who bought it? |

So here's a slightly different take on what's going on... http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/chevy-volt-sti ll-not-selling_581956.html
quote:The July sales numbers are out and the Chevy Volt continues to electrify (get it?) the country. GM sold … 125 Volts last month! Way back in March I made fun of the Volt for selling 281 units in February. Turns out, February was a good month. But wait, there’s more! GM says they’re going to increase production to 5,000 Volts per month in order to keep up with demand. You see, they claim that the reason the Volt isn’t selling is that they can’t keep enough cars on the lot. A GM spokeswoman recently claimed that they are “virtually sold out.” Which is virtually true. Mark Modica called around his local Chevy dealers and found plenty of Volts waiting for an environmentally conscious driver to bring them home. All told, GM has sold close to 2,700 Volts. (Funny aside: There’s a Volt in my neighborhood and a Volt that parks in my garage at work. So I see almost 0.1 percent of all the Volts in America on a daily basis.) But hey, the EV future is just around the corner.

You're exactly right Xl1200r, the folks at places like Pepsi put their sales staff in cars like that so that they are seen to care about the environment and hopefully the goodwill they generate translates into increased sales. And if GM does manage to sell 45,000 units in the US, you'll be paying part of the $337,500,000 ($7500 each) in subsidies. I agreed to include all sales no matter where they went. Do you to get in on Froggy's action? |

Just a question . It takes DIRTY energy to build te VOLT. It takes DIRTY energy to build SOLAR panels , WIND farms , and every thing else that is made . When is "GREEN POWER" Going to start powering the companies that manufacture this crap . |

The clever dealers found ways to manipulate paperwork and claim the $7500 rebate, hence screwing the greenies out of their incentive. Dang capitalists. |

All they have to do is charge $7500 over list price. I know they've been trying to sell them over list, I'm not sure how much over though. That too might explain the slow sales. Or it could just be that there's way better options available at far lower prices. |

Well like it or not electric vehicles are gonna creep in and get quite a share of the market in the next decade. IMO there is a lot more to getting our oil dependency down than first meets the eye. |

I've seen all kinds going on with that. Some were just blatant $7k markups on the MSRP, while others were doing more along the lines of bait and switch type stuff. The same is happening with the Nissan Leaf and previously on the Prius back when it had incentives too.
quote:It takes DIRTY energy to build te VOLT.
It takes energy to build any car, regardless of what car it is, or what power source you use.

Again you say it like you can't use clean power to do anything.

It has been for a while. There are various auto plants out there that have many green features, including zero waste, solar cells on roofs, and other things I'm drawing a blank on at the moment.

You can take anything in life and put a negative spin on it, doesn't mean its true. I love how they omit the fact that the factory was closed for a few weeks, its kinda hard to increase sales if you have no production! |

WOOD? Nope, it takes to long to grow to meet demand but you are on the right track. There is amazing work going on to use plant hydrocarbons instead of fossil hydrocarbons in the creation of plastic.} |

I wouldn't say no more oil, but we do need to shift away from it.
quote:What are you going to use to build the cars of the future .
Whatever we have available. Nuclear/hydro/solar/hamster/wind power to run the machines. Materials will be harder to switch, as plastic is dirt cheap, durable, light, can be shaped into anything, and did I mention its cheap? I rather us at least stop burning oil for fuel. |
