Ian, a carfax is a good first step, just remember it doesn't show everything. If you find a used car you really want and the price is fine, take it to a third party mechanic to have them check it over. Will cost you 40-80 dollars but it could save you thousands. |

I don't put much trust in Carfax, I was involved a pretty substantial accident with a Ford truck I had that was several years old, the final bill from the Ford dealer was almost what I paid for the truck, all through insurance, and it doesn't show up. I second the advise of a good unbiased inspection. |

Using carfax is like asking your girlfriend about past intimacy ....... You'll know only what someone wants you to know. PPI Pre-purchase inspection |

I agree with getting everything inspected by a third party. We bought a car for my girlfriend, a bit on a whim. The price was fair, a bit on the low side. I looked it over as best I could and thankfully it's been a mechanically sound machine. But, as it turns out, the entire car has been repainted, and with some hand washes and wax jobs, the "mistakes" are easier to spot. It was only 3 years old and had 42kmi on when we bought it, but none of it showed up on the carfax. |

Car fax I don't trust. That got sued hugely for alluding that mechanical things are checked- and lost. At my recently former employer, a chevy store we saw it all the time. Which is why as a. Company we used autocheck run by experian. It picked up all.sorts of stuff that car fax didn't. But defiantly do the ppl and if you can have someone who knows how to spot those repaints etc look it over. Good luck. |
