What car would you buy?

The one that I can afford!

I currently (for the last eight years) drive a '96 Toyota Avalon. Not a babe magnet or race winner but I got it on the cheap from my in-laws so I know what's been done to it and in the last eight years I've changed the battery, replaced the starter (at 158K) and replaced the front axles (at 160K) so in eight years I've spent around $650 in maintenance. It's been reliable as all get out and I can still get just over 400 miles to the tank if I use the cruise which I don't think is too bad considering I'm about to roll 175K.

Rat, I had one of those I bought for $45. Body was in good shape, interior was a little rough but not terrible, but it wouldn't run. Dad knew what was wrong with it and said we could fix it. Before we got around to it, my Papaw accidentally sold it. We were keeping it on his property with some other parts cars, and he thought I had the Daytona up for sale (I actually had a junked out Laser for sale). I still get sick over that.

Ahhh, the Chrysler Laser, my second car. 1986 with the talking computer that would check everything but the level of the drink in the cupholder. That was a very reliable car until the old man from Tn. rear ended me and totaled it

I still have my 86 Shelby Charger turbo, needs to be restored but still runs good. Currently driving a 08 Caliber R/T all wheel drive, comfy ride, Boston acoustics sound system, 27 mpg in town and 31 on the highway, and it is a blast to drive in snow!

Even though it is assembled in Mexico now... The VW Jetta is still an awesome car.

I generally prefer American made cars. Our last purchase was a Toyota Venza made in the Georgetown, KY plant. I even toured the plant and watched them cars. That was actually a pretty fun experience.

I also heard a report on the radio a week or so ago that said that the Toyota Camry (made at the same plant as our Venza) was the car with the most American content by value of any car sold in the U.S.

However, I did buy my daughter a Honda Fit and it has probably been the best car purchase I could have made for her. It did have one or two very minor things that needed taking car of right after we got it, but since it has been anvil reliable and the recommended service done at the dealer has even been very inexpensive. Hers is a first year model. They redesigned them a bit the very next year, but it is mostly minor cosmetic stuff. You can probably find a used one for a decent price. Even new they are pretty inexpensive.

Oh, and this week I saw a new Focus in person and thought it looked really nice. I could even see myself owning one. I'm holding out for a Mustang though.

My eldest son is in the Air Force, just bought a 1991 Toyota MR-2 (with a 3.0 V-6 Lexus conversion). Getting shipped as I write this. The kid's thinking is that if he's making payments on a car, he's not blowing his money on stupid stuff. Hate having him making payments, but can't argue with that logic. Car was priced well and is sporty........

Driving cross country at the moment

6 states today and the cheap Ford Focus is getting 37.4 mpg running 70-80 mph.

No complaints.

Bought a Fiat 500 a week ago.
Small exterior. Roomy interior (for 2). A tad bit better gas mileage than my 1125.

And (for a cage) Great Fun!!

KyR - "Ahhh, the Chrysler Laser, my second car. "
My first car was a turbo 84

I think this is a good thread, but we really need to know what this guy wants and how much he wants to spend.

Truly I've not owned any 'bad' cars, though I've not had many.

The laser I didnt have for long. I was dumb, it had a small oil leak and I quit checking the oil level. At 16 I didnt know the importance of oil in a motor....

mercury capri, 92, 4banger, over 30mpg without even trying. rock solid motor (mazda B6 motor), sadly I let it run out of oil twice and overheat about a dozen times or more. That was after a few 'bump-ups' and just beating the crap out of it. had over 200k when I sold it for a couple hundred bucks.
93 turbo mr2, again, solid motor, took a licking and kept on ticking, and got great mpg. And incredibly fun.

94 isuzu rodeo (or honda passport, they are same thing) - decent mpg for a v6 suv, like averaging 25 on highway. Towed my bike well, really had no mechanical issues, just silly stuff like the electric locks were iffy and the windows had a hard time going up sometimes.

03 pathfinder. 4x4 v6, great power, can tow a pretty large load (max is 5k, though I've not done it). Reliable truck, nice comforts inside of it etc

We currently own a 2009 Smart ForTwo Pure, a 98 Corolla, and a 2010 Honda FIt Sport.

Corolla: I hate it. Good car (car being engine, transmission, and brakes able to transport you from A to B). Everything else started to die on it shortly after new. Stereo tape deck (it was '98 after all) died in the first year. Power door lock solenoids have taken a dump - 3/4 of them. Windows don't roll up well. But it keeps going and getting decent MPGs. 28 is a bad day. 36 is a 80MPH road trip with the A/C.

Smart: Great car if you understand what it was meant for. Some people can't get past the transmission (imagine your brother managing the clutch & the shifter while you handle throttle, brakes, & the wheel). I love it. Loli loves it. Not for everyone. And if you care about handling, it has some of the most vicious understeer of any car known to man - intentionally tuned in for various reasons.

Fit: Best car I've ever owned. If Honda can make (essentially) a FWD microvan handle like this, wow. Really tolerable amounts of understeer, ludicrously minimal body roll, and a surprising kick in the pants - despite a like of, uh, feet. And the manual tranny.... Anyone who buys an automatic Honda should be shot. Bad day: 34 MPG. Good day: maybe 43 or 44. Car has 33k on it and while that's no statement of reliability, if it happened to disappear today, I would buy another just like it.

Toyota: does the job. Smart: neat, but not for everyone, and I have some doubts about the long term. Fit: Unreserved recommendation - and the owner surveys seem to agree.

The Hondas really seem to keep their value. I've been looking at Ridgelines for a couple of years now and they all seem to keep their value and all the reviews I've read have been positive. I'd buy one tomorrow if I could find one in my price range.

I want a Dodge Magnum and they can be found for about $7K for an earlier one if you shop around. If you don't plan on driving much, just get something you like that you can afford (initial cost and insurance) and has been well maintained. I think you'll be happier that way.

I'll prly buy used/pre-owned, and in the range of 8 or 9k, either way I'll have to get a loan/make payments, good thing is I don't have many expensises besides phone bill, and bike insurance.....housing and food are covered here at base!

One more thing, and this is kinda out in left field...

There are a couple of old men, brothers, who maintain the cemetary across the street from my house- they saw me doing a brake job for my buddy one day a few weeks back, on his seriously POS car- they got to talking (always do), and mentioned that each of them had bought cars- one was a Ford Fiesta type, the other was some kind of Toyota van- they bought these for cash from pawn shops. For $300 or less in the case of both vehicles!!

I've seen one old man drive the little Ford around here for years- the Toyota van I've not seen, but they said it was in great condition. "Caveat Emptor" certainly applies in any case, I've no experience buying a car like this, just the old men's word on it. But heck, it may be worth looking into...

Iman, you'd mentioned having to make payments- hopefully at your young age you can or already have built some good credit (which is important in and of itself), but in my book, having a vehicle and a clear title is the way to go.

Cash always "talks" the best when buying- if nothing else, mebbe you've got a family member or someone solid who could loan you the $$$. Just throwing some ideas your way, YMMV.

Good luck! And I still say a good truck is the way to go... ; )

Still have my '05 that was t-boned. 30k drivetrain, original owner 5.7 hemi. automatic. computers. harnesses. everything still working great, packaged in a frame that's 7" narrower now : (

if i could find a cheap, blown/hi mileage v6 car...i'd be all over it.

otherwise i'll have to put the hemi in my '72 satellite wagon : )
