You could make a worse choice of liquids to squirt into a lock cylinder

Actually you couldn't : (

Ask any experienced locksmith and they will tell you that WD40 is the worst possible lubricant available for any type of lock mechanism. It is 'sticky' and once full of dirt/grit/sh1t will wear the lock quicker than no lubricant at all unfortunately : (

I chose my words carefully. I said liquids not lubricants. There are worse liquids that you could squirt in there.

Use NanoLube! It's got diamonds! It's got to be good.

It actually is a good lube. I know people who use it on the actions of their guns. It would do a great job in a lock cylinder. It's way overkill though.

My gas cap has a neat little feature that blocks dirt from entering when the key is not inserted. If the lock gets dirty, another blast or two of WD40 cleans it out nicely.

I just can't see putting graphite where it might enter the fuel system.

Would a slight amount of graphite really do any harm in the fuel system? The worst I can see happening is lubing up the fuel injectors just a bit. I can't believe the particles would be big enough to clog anything. I also doubt there would be an adverse chemical reaction. I did just lube mine today with some Lock Ease.

The lock is working nice and smooth now. I did my wife's Triumph too. I wish both keys turned in the same direction though. Some day I'm going to twist one of them right off going the wrong way!

Unfortunately the rest of my services didn't go quite as well. I striped the threads out on one of the bolts on the clutch inspection cover. My first experience having to put in a Heli-Coil. I couldn't believe how easily the threads pulled out.

you joke.

i work at an rv dealer. we trade bikes every now and then. the detail department 'detailed' one with a complete, dripping coat of armor-all.

seat.

grips.

floorboards.

tires.

all of it.

i educated them on why that was a bad idea. it hasn't happened since.

Armor-all pretty much sucks anymore..............compared to other 'shiny' products. I accidentally dribbled some on a linoleum floor.......man,what a ride.......... on stocking feet ....for weeks.

I dunno for sure, just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Probably not enough to worry about though. This thread has piqued my interest though; I'm going to be scrutinizing the gas cap next time I fill up.

I pulled mine yesterday and it sure seems like whatever gets in the tumbler can not get into the tank. Which makes sense because otherwise rain would run into the tank via the little pool on top the cap.

Has anyone ever seen gas escaping out the key hole?

Neither have I.

I see not reason to think anything will flow the other way either.
