I really like this writer's straightforward suggestions: You Want to Fix the U.S. Economy? Here's a Start http://www.oftwominds.com/blogjuly11/fix-US-econom y-6-11.html |

You're kidding, right? I agree with point 5. The rest is going back to the gold standard - a way of economics we've left decades ago. The writer's approach is a wreaking ball to the banking system. I'd rather take a wreaking ball to the federal and state spending. By the way.. if the "mark to market" approach on a weekly basis were introduced in banking the first to go are Fanny and Freddy. |

Oh yea, this would be a good idea: Allow citizens to discharge all mortgage and student loan debt in bankruptcy court, just like any other debt. If that happened I can guarantee you that student loans would be non-existant or the interest rates would be so high that nobody could afford them. same thing with mortgages. This guy obviously has a chip on his shoulder towards banks. |

I don't agree with number 5 either. Is that stating that the person who obtained the loan is off the hook? That's extremely wrong, I don't agree with what the banks did at all, but I also say the people getting the loans were at fault too. If your not smart enough to go through everything and understand it maybe you shouldn't have gotten a mortgage. |

And the problem with "taking a wrecking ball to the system" is.........? I mean, do you really want to defend the absolute corruption and unaccountability of the big financial corporations and their absolute corruption of politicians left and right? Do you think our economy is so strong and robust right now that we should leave everything as it is? OR do you think that the real bricks and mortar aspect of our economy, making and selling stuff, is so weak that it could not withstand the blow of allowing the TBTF banks to fail? I would welcome a return to small, locally oriented banks with accountability and books that are not cooked. Absolutely, punish both the banks and the borrowers who participated in fraud in the lending process. As to student loans, if none existed, the universities would not be able to charge as much as they do. We are sustaining a bloated system, an "education bubble," that needs to burst. Schools churn out kids so deep in debt from the get-go that they never have a chance. Mortgages are already able to be discharged in bankruptcy. You give up the house, you lose the mortgage debt. All these measures would be doing is to make the banks "man up" and take responsibility. To be held accountable and punishable for wrongdoing. So far, all I see is TBTF banks reaping huge rewards, while any risk of failure is passed on to you and me, the tax payers, forced to "bail them out." It's utter BS, and needs to stop. They will bleed the country dry. Let's cry out for free market capitalism, not rigged market capitalism, where the tables are doctored so the house always wins. I am utterly sick of the big banking institutions getting caught time and time again with their hands in the till, getting caught manipulating the markets, and getting punitive fines - basically wrist slaps - rather than having to face real consequences that would act as a deterrent to illegal and unethical behavior. Measures like these are a beginning of discussion. Let's hear others. |

Fahren, Less students in the colleges would actually makes costs go up not down. The only ones who could afford college would be the ultra rich, the ultra poor who get grants or the student athletes on full ride scholarships. To keep costs down colleges must have a lot of kids to help spread the load. America is already falling so far behind in math and sciences. Do you want to make it worse? |

Free money increases cost of college? http://www.freedomworks.org/blog/jborowski/unfortu nately-expanding-pell-grants-likely-to-incr Makes sense. Other disagree. The others I found that disagree work for universities or are funded by universities. Not sure I trust their opinion. |

I think anyone who has more than two children, should kill all subsequent children and then feed them to the rich... That way, the rich will get richer, and the poor will just dissapear... simple, really, genious, in my opinion... Why hadn't I though of that before now, I don't know ??? |

Here's a little conspiracy theory to chew on... Certain elements of the Democratic party want college to be paid for by taxes, like the K-12 schools are. If you make something expensive enough, only the government will be able to afford it. The government intentionally causes the price of college to increase, leading to a government take over of colleges. OK, end of conspiracy theory. Having college paid for by taxes at the state level may not be a bad thing. A 12th grade education doesn't cut it any longer for most people. Taxes pay for K-12 because it was thought that 13 years of education was enough. That's clearly not the case any longer. Just a thought. |

The talking heads on my moronoscope were using the "kick the can down the road" cliche a week ago. I'd like to kick the cliche down the road. All kidding aside, societies that continue deficit spending have to have an economic day of reckoning. It's automatic and the only end game. The sooner it occurs, the sooner the fresh start begins. Period. |

Rocket, what percentage of your union dues is handed over to the Democratic party to support elections, lobbying and etc.? Does any of it go to Republican or Libertarian candidates or lobbying? What ever value is handed over for political activities is part of the price of your companies goods or services. Perhaps some of us are not in agreement with purchasing goods or services priced to include a handover of funds to politicians and political activities with which we are not in congruence. Just sayin'. (Message edited by moxnix on July 21, 2011) |

Those rich are awful! These statistics tell it all: http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/30/top-1 -paid-more-in-federal-income-taxes-than-bottom-95- in-07/ From the NY Times, so it must be true. Obviously not paying their "fair share" |

I wish there were universities that just teach stuff. No abstract research, prefer good teachers over brilliant minds, merit based pay, set them up in abandoned wal-marts, etc. Make it an 8 year bachlor degree, but with a co-op program where students do REAL work. Then it might not cost $50k a year to not get an education... |

Bill if some one wants an education they cant be stopped. But if they do not want to learn , but just get that paper so they can get a job. Your wasting thier time and our money. I paid for all my college myself. No loans paid as I went carried a full course load worked full time If you want it bad enough you can do it. A fellow Camp Perry shooter teaches in Virginia she says teach the best shoot the rest! |

The auto industry went in the toilet when the finance guys with the MBAs took over from the car guys with the engineering degrees. They made it all about how much money you could make now, not how good a car you could build. The UAW didn't help but it is management's job to keep the train on the tracks. |

Outsourced myself. Headed overseas where my personal demand is exponential compared to the local economy. and the day of reconing is closer than you think, the Fed is pushing for a new currency reset right around 2016 - they are already drumming up the images for the new currency... under the auspices of different sized notes for the visually impared.... look for a new 'valuation' of the paper when it gets 'published' Hell call them 'Freedom notes' or some other pedantic Hopey Changey Thing. The next 6 years we are on a raile road course collision with the 100 year anniversary of the Red Oktobre Revolution and an appartchik that seems on a penchant to make history rhyme. (and like any sequel - it will suck worse than the first) Read Lennin's "What is to be Done".... should smell familiar. |

>>I want some of what Dave was having! LOL<< Doing three things at once and was talking about the weather in the hot thread. OK - I reckon if you want to fix your economy, devolve the military into a citizens militia (it worked for Vietnam and you already have the guns) - like a home guard and stop peeing trillions in the sand wars. But what do I know. |
