Bill Gates was a great poker player, too, at Harvard and sitting around waiting for venture capitalists. Come to think of it, that's kinda' all he's ever done.

Wow Fatty... who knew underneath all that blustering there is actually a nice guy... good for you...

I personally would love to go back to Kenya and work on drinking water and sanitation projects...

One thing I will never forget was when we were tearing across the desert on the west side of Lake Turkana... roughly two days north of Nairobi... nothing but dust and tumbleweed and washboard in our packed Land Rover decked out with gasoline and water jerry cans on top... and we see this Turkana woman was out there all alone... with a 45 pound jerry can of water on her head... just booking across the desert.

That was only one of the wonderful magical things I saw in Africa. So many great people, people with nothing but a hand ful of grain, nowhere to live but in the bush that would invite you in and treat you like royalty.

ALMOST EVERYONE we met that was Native African treated us this way... from the sub Sahara where we lived with Berbers, to the Turkana that live with no water and just a strip of leather for clothing... to the Masaii who beat the heck out of us at volleyball. Amazing people.

Now mind you I was not traveling with a military troop, carrying a gun and there to so called "keep the peace"... or enact "regime change"... like maybe others on this board have been.

Not that Africa hasnt had its own decimated cruel, tragic and endless ethnic genocide clensing for DECADES..... its that American and World policy doesn't care.

If they needed a Russian linguist to count dead bodies, find mass graves, interrogate locals to the origin, cause, and perpetrators of who was killing whom that after noon, week, month, season - my phone would indeed ring.
(they don't - and it doesn't, and unless the Soviet Union pops back up in say Chad - it never will)

The videos linked are in French. His native tongue is Bede, one of the 95 tribal dialects of Ivory Coast. Some years ago I located his number in Germany and rang him up. My oldest son was shocked to witness my end of an animated conversation that couldn't be understood. I got a bit weepy to know he was okay and doing decent stuff.

My two Lao bodyguards, Moun and Kai, are now living in Seattle and all grown up with families, but that was the other side of the world. We put in over a mile long water system in a hurry. I'm sure the Pathet Lao took it over afterwards.

I'd tell you how we buried the Eskimo mayor's mother at -55 F, but it's a secret. Okay, it involves gasoline and wood to make the ground turn to mud which can be scooped out. Better than having to await Spring.

A modicum of bleach will fix a lot of e coli contaminated wells, if you can keep the village dogs from peeing on the well head.

They moved - most were nomatic....and they had a penchant for using dried dung for fire fuel - at least so said the sixth grade 'social studies' curriculum

The Greeks, before the plumbing, used to let loose in clay pots, that were left to ferment, and then were dosed in a tar oil resin and launched at the enemies in battle - it is the first notion of a biological weapon ; ) termed as 'Greek Fire'

There's a video on liveleak I wasn't about to watch of a guy in africa beaten and set on fire for stealing. Clearly more aide and better toilet accommodations in africa are needed. Maybe if they cut their space program they can get enough funds.

Brian,

Even nomads have to poo. but I was thinking of the non-nomadic cultures, the ones that had cities like the massive Aztec city of Tenochtitlan or even the smaller settlements like those of the Anasazi.

Johnny, please stop being an arse on MY THREAD... Blake said it is mine so just stop... or kindly step off...

Blake, I don't know where the crap went before modern plumbing... my guess is something like City said. They either had a use for it... or there were not enough people for it to really impact them in an adverse way...

I am sure someone sitting up in his ivory tower somewhere has made a living studying prehistoric poo...

On a related but non-political topic, I read an article a while back where someone had discovered a practically free drinking water purification method for third world countries. Take clear plastic bottles (left over soda bottles are fine) and fill them with water. Set them outside in the sun for 5 or 6 hours (apparently putting them on a hard surface like a sheet of roofing tin that reflects light at the under side is even better). The combination of heat and UV is practically 100% effective in killing bugs in the water and making it safe for drinking. No chlorine, pumps, treatment systems, etc. required.

More info here: http://www.emergencywaterpurification.com/solar-wa ter-purification.shtml

Whatever look up how the Romans handled thier wast in Rome Plumbum latin for lead Plumbers you see. The Romans had a very advanced system worked on gravity no pumps! Call up Ole Rocketsprink he can get you a book from the UA web site on the history of plumbing. I would get you one but they hate me lol like I care.
Gohot you asked why we use 3.8 liters of water per flush The reason is the hydraulic gradiant required to move solids down the pipe The math is a little intense but not too tough. Quick version is think of the solids like a surfer going down the pipe too fast liquids run away from the solids leading to clogs too slow and friction losses slow flow and again clogs.
