Just moved the deposit on our new pad from NZ to Aus currency and lost $43k on the exchange rate. Aussie Dollar is very strong. 105c US Such is travelling heavy I guess. 6 weeks to go. Carpet layers downstairs now is the last stage of renovations before NZ house goes to auction. I've been stalling putting the Buell on the market, but yeah, you're right, its time. Next job. When the hammering stops |

We picked up $25k on the move over here - so it's not really *that* bad. Still smarts a bit, but the pool, the pool. NZ is a small country. There are more people in Sydney or LA. Suffers from that 'economy of scale'. I read that: Aus has a 'relatively' healthy resource based economy. They just found a rich iron ore deposit with over a billion tonnes in the Kimberleys. Just one example. Plus we have much of the world's Uranium and lots of other inert metals used for electric cells and such. Dig it up and sell it to Asia I think is the plan. Down side is the strength of the $Au is killing tourism and exports so it's a double edged sword. It's also had reasonably sound fiscal policy and surplus budgets of late. There are calls for a common AUS-NZ stock exchange and currency. That is like suggesting the same for the US and Canada though. |

NZ has a lot of agricultural products that the Chinese want. Coffee Milk and Eggs. It's all relative, my man. |

Yeah - Co-operative payouts to the dairy farmers have been high. But the mining is the supposedly the explanation for the current gap in rates. According to the Sydney Papers anyway. (Ask me about motorbikes.) In 2007 there was only a few cents difference. |

>>I cant imagine losing 40 grand just from moving<< That's just on the deposit. An 1190, kitted truck and a full time mechanic for a year by the time it's all done. BTW - Not sure about coffee and eggs. Dairy and Milk solids deefinately. |

"That is like suggesting the same for the US and Canada though." That has been suggested in the past. Canada has a relatively low volume of currency in circulation and spends tons of money every year maintaining it, i.e. printing new bills, collecting old ones, striking coins etc. They'd save a bunch of money by using US currency. Until recently, Canada's currency was pretty solidly pegged at 70 cents US. Since the shale oil strike up there and the freefall of the US dollar though, the Canadian dollar is worth more, a bit over 1:1 last time I checked. I don't know what that does to the equation, especially if it continues to grow relative to the US dollar. Our currencies aren't 'linked' any longer, so it probably doesn't make sense for them to do that now, if it ever did. |

Hey neighbour! Well, not exactly neighbour, but relative to Auckland a lot closer! Vamps and I live in Sandgate, but I work in Capalaba which isn't far from your new place. We'll have to catch up once you've settled in |

Yep - very much looking forward to seeing a 'project' gig too. We'll have some pleasant spots for general sifting about too. We're 'just about' over the line on the purchase.

Nice place... with all that white everywhere... it reminds me of two things, neither being any more incongruous than the other in my diseased imaginings...

Yea - I will have to get something to deal with the small amount of lawn around the edges and out front though. Current place has no lawns or grass at all. New joint has parkways nearby for the Doogle. |

Good call - he'll go with the Pool Boy. Never had a place with a pool before - it's a salt water unit which I'm told are pretty low maintenance - ? |

They require regular water testing and salt(& sometimes chlorine) top ups, but on average they are better and easier to maintain pools than fresh. They hold the heat better in colder weather and are better for your skin too |

You know, you could more than make up the loss by turning the new place into a Bueller B&B. I think a few people might be interested in stopping by. |
