Anybody else want to post up their bikes? I just dropped bunch of cash into mine (relatively speaking), and I'd like to talk about them without my girlfriend/fiance finding out what I spent . So I'll post here instead of Facebook :P. I have a Genesis 2100 (Somewhat of a cheap bike, but good for the money, and not much of it is left) with Origin-8 Pedals, handlebar stem, and 28" bars, and I just ordered a set of Vuelta Zerolite wheels, a set of disc brake calipers and 203mm rotors, SRAM 7-speed cassette (for custom gearing), new tubes, and some Origin-8 Bar ends. In a few weeks I plan to order a Marzocchi Bomber front fork and a different rear shock. I think I'm more interested in building stuff than I am using it lol, though I've put over 60 miles on the bike in the last week...
I got inspired by the last thread to get out and hit the trails. I found out that I've been living about 3miles from an awesome series of mtb trails. So after riding my gf's dad's bike through the trails I had to get my own. I really had set my mind on a Trek (made in USA and decent entry level prices) but ended up buying a Specialized Hardrock. The reason being that it was at a small local shop with AMAZING service and they had a big discount on one in my size. Apparently nobody wanted to buy blue bikes last year so they had a few year-old blue bikes marked way down so I was able to spend the extra scratch on gear.
I've had a blast riding the Chickasabogue Park trails. Unfortunately since Ashley and I started marathon training I haven't had a chance to get back in the last few weeks.
I'd be lying if I told you I've ridden it lately. But I have started to get back into my "not dieting but not eating like crap" habits. Bike isn't far off, walking/jogging to get some cardio going. Need to air up the tires and lube the chain.
Nice Vid Curtis! We have a group that rides Palo Duro Canyon every Saturday. Conflicting schedules hasn't let me get out there yet but I will soon, and eagerly looking forward to it after I get the rest of my parts in . I was really inspired by the last thread as well to get out and ride. My brother has the same bike as me (but without the extras) and he wrecked his the other night and bent up his front wheel and possibly disc pretty bad, and tweaked his back wheel too. That's the main reason I went ahead and got my stuff ordered, so I could make him a fair deal on my stock parts to get his up and running again.
Biking! You don't have to go to the river to use it! I love trails riding, but 99% of my riding right now (hopefully it'll soon be down to 80%) is commuting. I ride my bike to Canyon often (15 mi from here) and anywhere in town I need to go as well.
Mike, that's a nice bike you're eyeing. I'd like to get a road bike as well eventually for te trips to Canyon and back, but right now the funds only allow for one bike, so...
Kevyn, you're in my neck of the woods! I'm on Amarillo. You better put that 29er to use before I sneak up there and steal it .
Just Braggin'!! but no that's not me or anything like me in the video. It just so happens that I was sitting there watching him do that jump off the ladder, though. And the tabletop jump there at 0:44 is where I crashed and put myself out of commission for 6 weeks!
That's a 666 Coil Marzocchi. Has 7" travel. At the moment I have a 6" RS Lyrik on it that I picked up cheap. The Lyrik is lighter and travel adjustable with a lockout. With the inch less travel makes keeping the front end down on climbs a lot easier. The plan is to put the big fork on when shuttling riding a lift!
Where do you guys get your aftermarket MTB parts? My bike came with regular (v?) brakes but it has frame lugs for discs. I'm thinking that's something I might add later. Not sure if I really need them though. I'm kinda like you Phelan, I get as excited about working on stuff as I do actually using it.
I really like the off-road biking though. I have tried riding on the street with my gf and her dad. They always leave me in the dust. But it was funny the first time Ashley and I hit the trails. She was struggling to keep up and I was having a ball. She is used to riding at a set speed for hours while I like the "sprinting" nature of trail riding.
I got some of my stuff from the local bike shop, Outdoor Element. The rest of the stuff I got on eBay. My bike came with a disc up front and V-brake in the rear, with no provisions for rear disc. The new wheels I got have provisions for 6-bolt discs and the new calipers have adapters for the post mount that my front has, but I have an excellent fabricator friend that I'll employ to fit up a post for the rear. I wanted to go hydraulic but I didn't have the funds and chose to go with the big discs rather than pay more for just the front hydraulic setup. This way I'll already have the discs and can upgrade to hydraulic later if I choose to.
Just like motorcycle shops, I try to support the little if not local guys at least most of the time.
I bought the bike above as a frame/shock only from a shop in Vancouver BC. A few of the parts (Fork, crank, brakes) I found really cheap year end closeouts via internet. A lot of the rest came from Larry at Mountain High Cyclery in Colorado, and several top shelf items from the local shop.
As for main internet shops, Universal Cycles, Price Point are a couple of place to start, but there are millions.
If you are thinking of brakes a) hydraulic disc brakes are awesome! b) unless you really know what you are doing or want to do a lot of research, take it to the local shop. There's tons of details about adaptors, hose length etc, that will get you messed up and you'll waste your money. Since your bike came with rim brakes, you likely need new hubs, which means new wheels and it starts getting expensive. Depending on your bike it may not be worth it.
I frequent Chainlove.com . A lot of good deals to be had on parts and gear.
I have an old Motobecane that I bought to get used riding bikes, in the dirt, possibly with no ground underneath. Also started doing DH recently but I rent bikes when I do that since they cost nearly what I paid for my Buell...
I've been slack, have hardly ridden since I got back from my trip a month ago, but starting to get back into it. I did get some new gear for me though - new Vans and a new helmet - and keeping an eye out for knee/shin pads. I have found out where there are some single tracks about 30 minutes drive from where I live, so I'm hoping to get over there sometime in the next few weeks and give the Mongoose (and me!) a work out.
Phelan - got any pics of your build up?
Scott - I forget the name/brand, but is that front gearset one of the planetary type gearsets?
The name of the planetary crank is Hammerschmidt, but that isn't one. That's just a 22-32 double with a bash guard, Race Face Atlas.
The Hammerschmidts are nice, can shift the front under load. They are a little heavy, though and the engagement, the amount you pedal to turn the pedal before the crank starts pulling , is pretty slow compare to my hubs.
The latest pic I have only had the pedals and bars on the bike. I'm still waiting on the rest of the parts to come in and then I'll throw up a better pic with them installed as the bike will look completely different. I'll go ahead and post the most current pic I have in just a sec. Since the pic the only difference is that I removed the turbospoke. It's cool and all, but I gave it to a little boy that lives downstairs from me as I figured it would make his coolness bar much higher than it does mine .
I have a Rocky Mountain Slayer 70 with full Fox suspension front and rear. Really nice feature is the ability to lock out the suspension especially when climbing uphill and I also have the "office chair" seat post so I can lower the seat quickly if it gets really rough.
im debating between the fuji nevada 1.0 29er and the cannondale trail sl4 29er now. I wont have the cash for them for a little bit, ill just ride my old bike til then.
