It's easy in Iowa! i see them everyday. i have fun when someone asks me if this bungee net is the right size to strap there helmet to the passenger seat... i say i have no idea... wouldnt it make more sense to wear it instead of carry it along...?! then i get that dumbfounded look from them. just had a guy ask me that the other day again. his job requires mc riders to wear a helmet on their bikes on company property, also requires car drivers to have on a seat belt and NOT be on the cell phone while driving on company property, and the bicyclists must also wear helmets. it is zero tolerance and immediate termination if caught.(atleast they are not singling one group out) so what does he do. rides the 40 miles to work, then stops across the street at the gas station and puts the helmet one, then rides across the street into the parking lot and parks the bike then takes it back off. hmm, okey dokey.} do what you want, doesnt matter to me... sometimes it just seems odd though. |

I don't get this "I don't bother with a helmet for local or low speed trips". People die from head injuries because they slipped in the bath! Not that I'm saying you should wear a helmet in the bath, but your noggin is a pretty fragile thing. You wouldn't headbutt a solid object normally, why take the risk of doing it accidentally? Because you're free to do so, & if you don't you're not exercising your essential rights & freedoms? Nope, just don't get it. Notwithstanding the safety aspect, there's the comfort side of things. I see the state of my helmet & visor when I clean them. I don't want all that crap in my face either. |

Like i said earlier... good or bad decision, this is a perfect example of the media and police telling people what they want them to think/know! I know for a fact that the official C.O.D. was severe chest trauma... not head trauma! |

More from Slaughter's random thought generator: We kill one or two squids-and-kids in their full gear on sportbikes here in So Ca each weekend. The local police call this the "killing season" and not the riding season. Think about it. Stupidity kills. Blunt force trauma, speed - both bad when combined. Helmets help. Freedom = good; Stupid = bad; no insurance = bad; irresponsibility = bad I still think we should default to organ donation and ONLY IF we object formally can they not harvest organs. We should have a "I'm keeping mine, you can't have them" box to check on our DMV forms. No minors can be harvested without parental consent. When you turn 18, you MUST fill in the forms to dis-allow organ harvesting - otherwise it's "IMPLIED CONSENT." (Message edited by slaughter on July 10, 2011) |

I am an organ donor... but I need to get my living will in order... no vegetablization on life support for me... used to have a caveat on my license that denied access to my brain, because it is faulty... Now they can have it all, it isn't going to do me any good anyhow in my cold dead body... |

Char...Yeah... Sunny and I had that discussion when I got started again in racing. Sunny said that when I was in ICU after my turn1 get-off with my TBI (and ribs, spine, collarbone, ankle, detatched retina and more) - she said that it helped (a little) to know how to handle the issue if it did come up, they almost had to remove my skull before I regained consciousness to make room for the brain swelling. |

That's what I would call getting a 'big head'? Sorry, I know it is lame but I couldn't help! |

What do all of you think about the states that require proof of medical insurance before riding without a helmet? When I lived down that way I think Florida had implemented something along those lines. |

WHY does EVERYTHING have to be a law? Why can't we just all be SMART!? I just don't get it! I don't get it at all. Its proven that helmets save lives.....mine have saved mine twice now. Thank God I did not need a law to make me put it on. |

Florida requires a rider to be over 21 & have $10,000 dollars of health coverage in order to ride w/o a helmet. I work in health care & I can state conclusively that $10K might just pay for the ambulance, Emergency treatment & one brain scan. It's a crazy law but I can't complain too much as I occasionally ride W/O a helmet etc'. (I do preach ATGATT though) Chris C |

I am all for making a free choice, but mine is pretty simple after my recent crash. Every single piece of gear has evidence where it saved me from further damage. Helmet, jacket/armour, gloves, pants/armour, boots. My brand new HJC modular has massive scrapes from left front chin guard all the way over the top. My face would have been toast in an open helmet. The EMT's saw the helmet and kept asking me concussion questions, but I did not even feel a bump on my head/face! I just remember the hit to my left shoulder pad, which was pretty massive. It was an upper 80's hot day, and there were few other than us in full gear. I may have busted 9 bones, but I didn't need any skin grafts or a new face, and it had nothing to do with there being a helmet law in NC. |
