I recently received a speeding ticket in the mail. I was furious ! (still am when I think about it) I felt violated (big brother). The ticket included 2 photos of my truck and was signed by a patrolman. Shady-ass deal in my opinion, they drop the speed limit and hang a camera on a pole 1/4 mile up the road. $50 The laws have recently changed in Tennessee and they can't ticket you for speeding with a camera within 1 mile (i think) of a reduced speed zone. I want my $50 back ! Anyhow... what I come to talk about. I'm no big speeder or a red light runner, BUT, after getting that ticket, I started looking at ways of protecting myself from this happening again. There are several red light/speed cameras in my hometown, as well as 2 small SUV's that seem to be everywhere. It's when you go out of town and not familiar with you surroundings that one of these 'camera cops' are more likely to get you. That's what happened to me. Soooo, just incase I find myself not paying attention AGAIN, I'd like some help. Have any of you guys used this product or anything like it. I have also seen license plate covers, but have read mixed revues about them. Any input ??? http://www.phantomplate.com/ Matt |

The Mythbusters did a whole episode about this. They concluded that none of that stuff worked. |

There are some states trying to make this practice illegal. Arguments are that the officer has to chase you down and give you a ticket so you know you've done something wrong. That spry is really cool, but if you cover your plate with it, and you ride at night, you can be certain of getting a ticket because the entire plate could be one big reflector and can not be read. |

You know what sucks about the red light cameras so much is that they make me consider slamming on the brakes when I see a yellow light now. I am sure I would get a ticket for that if someone rear ended me or I went endo the handle bars int he middle of the intersection. I always go to court to get things reduced or dismissed if at all humanly possible. My last ticket that was impossible and I have regreted it ever since ! |

That Phantom plate site is comical, I would never buy anything from a site that looks like this, it screams "I have a junk product but I want you to buy it anyway". |

Buy a out of state license plate on eBay for cheap and use that. Wonder how long it would take them to trace the plate? Game over if you get physically stopped.......improper registration. |

About .4 seconds. If you drive near a cruiser with the plate cameras on them, they are constantly reading plates looking for expired, invalid, and other illegal tags. You would get caught instantly and you won't be leaving with your bike. |

Buy a out of state license plate I'd rather pay the $50. Like I said, I'm no speed demon or red light challenger. I'd just like a little edge if I'm not paying attention for that split second. Big Brother has the edge. |

Wouldn't a radar detector work with the speeding camera trailer? Aren't they unmanned so they wouldn't be instant on. |

Yep it would, I've had mine go off from them, and also on those ones they put up near construction sites that says "You are going XX, speed limit 45". I have the program Trapster on my phone which will show you many speed camera, red light camera, and other related locations. |

Something I always thought of trying but never have... Get a cheap photographic slave strobe and mount it to your bike aimed at the plate. When a light source hits it that is fast enough to trigger, it flashes and over exposes the plate. |

You could also just drive legally. |

Problem is with these cameras, they often post them right where the speed limit drops, so if you aren't familiar with the area its an easy catch. Also it has been proven that when they setup red light cameras they shorten the yellow times too, which increases accidents as people will mash on the brakes to avoid a light ticket. |

You could also just drive legally. In NZ they don't carry demerit points. It's just a fee to ride like you want. |

My point was that even if you are driving legally, you can still get they ticket. The camera is a machine, it can't make a judgement call that you are indeed slowing down for the lower speed limit, or if you really blew a red light. |

I almost got plowed trying to turn left at an intersection with big government cameras. I didnt want to get the ticket so I hauled ass through the turn and the guy turning into the bank through my route didnt see me coming. Big pucker effect that day. |

A Speeder's Guide to Avoiding Tickets by James M. Eagan http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_36?url=se arch-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=a+speeders+ guide+to+avoiding+tickets&sprefix=a+speeders+guide +to+avoiding+tickets Mostly it helped me decide it wasn't worth the trouble most of the time. As a LE officer, and citizen I believe that reducing yellow times when putting up cameras, or reducing limits and putting up cameras (for profit) is unethical. Politicians, and lawyers may argue that it's legal, but that doesn't make it ethical. The book above was useful to me before I went into the business. Give it a read. If you had to pay a fine, just get it from the library instead of buying it. |

Move to Colorado, we outlawed speed cameras here. Still have stoplight cameras in some towns but I am ok with that those may save my life someday. A photo radar is just revenue... |

Forgive my ignorance on this, but don't these cameras face you, and take a photo of you from the front (i.e., made for cars)? Or do they snap you just after you pass them? As you can tell, I've not (yet) encountered one (thankfully). |

>>>>I believe that reducing yellow times Be mindful that the "yellow time" (technically called "clearance") is not an arbitrary time but derived (for the most part) from a formula in the MUTCD.
quote:4D.26.03 Standard is: "The duration of the yellow change interval shall be determined using engineering practices. A Support references the ITE "practices."
For a host of interesting discussions Google . . MUTCD Yellow Clearance. The last one I got had great photos. |

Another idea, if there's no face pic, or a partial one. Can't you plead the fifth? If you don't admit to it and they can't prove it was you (plus your spouse can plead the fifth too...). It's not a felony and not worth their time, right? Danger, we have a point system here... A ticket is worth X amount of points and the camera can't make snap judgements. Shorter yellow lights mean that the camera is going the instant it turns red and if you're still finishing the intersection, you're done. |

Face picture does not matter, here anyways. Owner gets the ticket, regardless of who is driving. Your vehicle, your responsibility. |

"Your vehicle, your responsibility." Sounds like something to argue about in court. |
