quote:Cheap, maybe.... I would never say that anything with Windows is easy, or, especially, works. Once you go Mac you'll never go back!!
I'd disagree . . . you are likely in the "I'll build my own" crowd. I want one thing . . OUTPUT. I know nothing about what goes on inside . . I'm fine with that. The way I got the Vostro was . . . while one the ferry one day I see the ad that Dell runs in the New York Post . . something about a zoomy computer with a 21" monitor for $399 or something. I know the game . . . the start at $399 and end up at $4,000.00 . . I've been through that with all 9 of my IBM ThinkPads . . I always get ALL the upgrades. This time I decided I'd even the score. I call Dell . . give them the code from the ad. . . and they start offering me all this extra stuff. . . I take none of it. This was a replacement for the SCU's Windows Millennium disaster . . all it needed was internet access and whopping spreadsheet capabilities. So we get the thing and it ROCKS! For me . . well I have a zoomy Mac with Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture and all those good photo things . . it's preety much the only machine I use. But . . I needed something to run Primavera, ProLog and Project . . so I went right back to Dell and ordered the most optioned Vostro I could. I get the Windows OS at work for $12 (also get them through school) so I didn't need that or the Office package. I just fired up the machine, bought a couple of the biggest monitors I could get (my old 15"'s are happily doing duty on a new production line in Wisconsin) and I went Vostro. I also have a pair of T61 Lenovo's in docks on the desk so, with 7 screens it looks a bit fancier than it is. The most salient feature of the Vostro is I had to do NOTHING . . it just works, it's cheap and it rocks. I'm getting ready to do a killer Mac with a couple 27" monitors . . . but I really like the good old Vostro. |

Court - If you are thinking of doing a killer Mac optimized for Photoshop, you might want to visit the Digilloyd web site, if you haven't already. He specializes in setting up Mac's for the best possible performance with Photoshop, and he really knows his stuff. http://macperformanceguide.com/ |

Fun thread. Froggy has too much time obviously and d/l lots of porn... hehehe! I've been steadily filling up my little home server with 7TB storage (blu-ray backups). Upgraded XBMC AppleTV to my TV. Looking at the WD TV options so i can go full 1080p (ATV w/ hardware encoding card still will only do hi res 720p - which looks good, but want 1080p) I use my macbook pro for photo stuffs (LR, Aperture, etc.) New system will be a VM powerhouse w/ lots of systems running at once. Plus the occasional RAM drive if i want to game (got the RAM might as well use it all!). Dual 24's - maybe soon a 30 in the center w/ 24's on the wings... drool. If you want to play around with hackintosh - google osx86 and get into their forums. Good site. Also look at VMWare/Virtual Machine OSX - pretty easy if you have the spare HDD, RAM, CPU cycles. |

So far I am very happy with my new Lenovo Edge E220s laptop. The screen is 12.5 inches, which may be small for some, but I like it just fine. The feel of the keypad on it is the best of any laptop I've ever touched. Great amount of power in a small package, and at a relatively small price. I picked it up for about $1,000.00 even. Runs Win7 Pro 64 bit. Just installed WireShark on it to start some packet sniffing. (Message edited by j2blue on June 09, 2011) |

I have a mac and a toshiba. I bought both the same week about 2 years ago. BOTH are running strong! I use the toshiba atleast 4 times as often as the mac ( including the wifes time ) So with that, I have to say that "once you go mac, you won't go back" is false in my case. I doubt I spend twice as much as I needed to next time. My Toshiba is my favorite. Now... If we talk phones... You'd have to pry my IPhone out of my cold dead fingers! I wouldnt trade my iPhone for any other phone out there. Anyhow, I guess I'm saying in recent years I think the general windows computers have improved dramatically. I don't think a large gap between mac VS. Windows quality exists anymore. ( and I'm not even running windows 7) |

I had to try the Apple experience, and for me, it wasn't good. My iMac crashed before I had it 90 days. I didn't think they were capable of the blue screen of death. After fighting it for a year and never quite grasping the operating system I sold it and bought a windows PC. Life is good again. |
