Anyone know the legalities of buying a used Canadian vehicle and importing it into the USA (New York specifically)? Titling being the biggest concern. My brother really wants to get a CBR125 which of course was never available in the USA, he wants to be able to commute on it and get over 100mpg. His next choice is a brand new CBR250 which he is going to look at over the weekend.

I'm also kind of interested because I'd like to get a little YSR80 which again never sold in the USA, but I can just get the motor and stick it in the frame I already have if I need to work around customs and registration.

doing it legally can be from a serious challenge to flat out impossible esp with vehicles that have never been sold stateside. basically the vehicle must be brought up to whatever standards that were in place here at the tiem of it's original manufacture. there a lot of other stuff too. basically if you're going for gas mileage forget it as in the end it will likely cost you more than you'd ever save at the pump

You can't register a vehicle without U.S. EPA emissions standards until it's at least 25 years old.

I think Aprilia made a 125 sport bike that was sold here for a couple years, but not positive.

If you put the YSR80 engine in a YSR50 chassis (for the US) you won't have any problems and the title, and therefore the reg, follows the frame.

I helped a girl import a current Guzzi 500 in 83 or so. It was only possible because the EPA guy that the Customs guy got on the phone knew that the US-legal carbs had a unique part # stamped on and the Customs guy verified it. The joke was that it was from a batch that the US importer sold to the Canadian dealer. What I should have done was bring the side cover from a buddy's US model with the EPA sticker inside to show them at the border.
