In 1996, Richard Petty, the winningest driver in Winston Cup history, was charged with running into the rear bumper of a man traveling on Interstate 85 north of Charlotte, N.C. Petty apparently was upset the man was driving in the left lane at a slower rate than other traffic. Petty was fined $65 after admitting he bumped the man at 60 mph to get his attention.

"I blinked my lights, and he put on his brakes to slow down," Petty said. "I didn't slow down."

spank - really? I thought they were racing in Charlotte last weekend for the all star race. I've ran the Petty Driving Experience there and hit almost 150mph, so I dont see how he didnt do better than 128 there with newer technology(this was in 2000 or 2001, whichever year earnhardt died, i remember that cause thats how we got our tickets, people got scared and backed out) and better skill. As much as i'd like to think Im a decent driver, guys that do this professionally definately do it better than I can

Hybrid - He was a State Representative at the time. The story as I heard it was that he was heading to Raleigh and some guy was camped in the left lane. Petty got ticked and kinda rubbed him. The guy called the cops, they later pulled the King over and the exchange went something like this:

'Mr. Petty, we got a report that you rear-ended a gentlemen and left the scene'

"Sure did, the sumbitch wouldn't get out of the way"

'Mr. Petty, you can't do that on an interstate highway'

"Why not?"

(from a reasonably reliable source in the NC LEO community)

Really guys? Nothing specific but on one thread you'll bash the Hell out of someone for running a stop sign, blowing a red light or cutting you off. Now we're going to praise someone for almost TRIPLING a posted speed limit or rubbing bumpers on the interstate? Really? That crap may pass on the oval but if they're on the interstate I have to share while carrying my wife and three kids I don't want them there. ESPECIALLY if he's a state rep. he of all people should know better. Just my .02.

Ky - by no way am I supporting Kyle bushes actions. Yes, I think the Petty incident is funny, its funny to me that the guy just didnt care.

But I do agree with you on a lot of that - people will post an incident on here and people rally behind them. Now there is this and its like 10 posts

He was going faster than his average speed last weekend in what must have been the Nationwide race I am not sure. Something 200 is what I read. I don't follow the left turn racing. He was cited although most of us would be in jail.

The King Richard story is true and if you rate rubbing on a scale of 1 to 10 it may have been a two.

Bright yellow Lexus LFA there are two of them around here and I believe the other one is being driven by Denny Hamlin. Pretty neat little car. I'm more impressed by the 128 on Perth Road...it had to be a burst of acceleration and the deputy got him at, or near, the top of it.

If I had his kind of lawyer money that is exactly how I'd roll around the county too : )

Kyle's thoughts...

All I have to do when he comes up to my window is hammer it, and push that damn squad car outta the way. Worked before!!! Then pout off to my trailer. Just a normal day.

It is simply awesome that Petty did that. It is incredibly rude that people camp in the left lane and then put their brakes on if you flash your lights to pass. IMHO they should lose their licenses for that kind of driving. I have SO many times thought about how cool it would be to bump one of these jerks.

In Colorado, state law, keep right except to pass. Unfortunately it's not posted very often, and probably not enforced much either. Most of the time the right lane is the fastest, because everyone is camped out in the left. Send everyone back to drivers ed!

Incredibly rude? Yeah for the most part I agree especially if they're just there to be there. If I'm doing 70-75 and passing someone and actually passing, not just driving beside them and someone comes up on my butt doing 85-90 and starts flashing lights you can guarantee I'm putting them in a nose dive. I've been in a high speed accident on the interstate, that crap ain't the least bit fun. Wasn't my fault but they didn't ask me when a good time to be in an accident was. What if king richard bumped the guy, put him into a spin or lost control and he hit you on your bike minding your own business? Dead right is still dead. Same thing I said about the woman getting the life sentence for selling some pot; it's I-L-L-E-G-A-L! If you want the rules changed then lobby to have them changed until then they are the laws, good or bad

Around here, lane camping is taken to an entirely different level of cranial-rectal inversion.

Typically, the camper will stay in the far left lane, even if the next lane to the right is completely open - and usually at, or just slightly above the posted speed. Then, if you blip the lights, they will slow down (intentionally). If you try to pass, they will then speed up and cut you off. I have had guys go from 60 in a 65 to over 85 mph when you try to pass them. Lots of suppressed anger issues around here... No posted signs "Keep right except to pass". I think they think that "I'm going fast enough and you don't need to be going faster than I am"

I can't resist getting into this. Man, does that p*ss me off! My daily commute is 125 miles and that just infuriates me! Particularly trucks and buses. Here in Maryland, almost every day I see a truck pigging up the left lane, sometimes for miles on end. They know, they just don't give a rat's a**. God forbid that one truck can do 1/2 mph faster than the one in front of him because he is going to insist on it. Then they get to an uphill stretch and can't cut the mustard. Of course, going downhill they will hit 85 and make it tough to pass them. If a vehicle blocks the passing lane for more than one minute, it ought to be a huge fine. That would do more for traffic safety than all the speed limits in the world, because you wouldn't have all that traffic bunched up behind the malefactor. There, rant mode off.

Right on Dwardo!

Imonabus,

I might have seen a fellow using a 2 million candle-power spot light with good effect on obstinate left laners. It was nighttime though. Doubtful that tactic would do much good during daylight hours.

Kyrocket,

>>> If I'm doing 70-75 and passing someone and actually passing, not just driving beside them and someone comes up on my butt doing 85-90 and starts flashing lights you can guarantee I'm putting them in a nose dive.

That is a really dumb thing to do. The light flashing is simply a means to communicate that they would like to pass asap. No need to get all bent out of shape about. Imagine how dumb you'd feel if it turned out to be a man rushing his pregnant wife to the hospital or some such emergency issue. Get over thyself. Be considerate.

>>> I've been in a high speed accident on the interstate

Given your attitude, is that surprising?

The best part of the Petty story came at the track after the fact. Cale Yarborough saw Richard in the garage and said "did ya think that was me in that car ya hit on the highway?"
Richard quipped back, "I knew it wasn't you, they just drove like you."

I agree it is rude beyond belief, and especially when the bastard puts the brakes on. I almost died from someone standing on the brakes when the van I was in was closing on someone sitting parked in the fast lane.
The driver of the van, which was loaded, couldn't stop as fast and hit the back of the car, throwing the van into a spin. We slammed off the guardrail, then flew over the edge of the road and down an embankment, stopping literally a few feet away from a 200 foot drop.
The car driver told the state cop that he 'jammed on the brakes to teach us a lesson because we were "going too fast".' The great news...they cuffed him and took him away.
That was years ago, he wouldn't get punished now probably. It was nearly murder. Proper penalty for a speeder I'm sure some think.
Man we have become a twisted police state society. I drive like they do in Europe - if someone flashes his lights, I move over. What business is it of mine to judge his or her speeds and needs?

Yes, there is a subspecies of left-lane campers I call "Citizen Speed Monitors". They are the worst of the worst. More often than not they are driving a car sporting numerous left-wing bumper stickers. They are no doubt the same ass hats who insist on riding bicycles in traffic lanes during rush hour. Flame suit on.

I watch my mirrors religiously.
One time a guy tried to kill me by mashing me between his truck and the car in front of me.
Glad I was on my Firebolt, not the old Wide Glide.

I ALWAYS let a faster driver pass me.
I hang back a quarter mile and pace my new "bird dog".
I hate tickets...

I run a 10 mile stretch of interstate to work and back, speed limit 75mph.
I usually run 80-85 in the right lane as it's emptier.
The middle lane is full of trucks.
Left lane campers are rare, thankfully, but most rarely drive above 80.

One of the funniest albums I have hever heard was Bill Cosby's 'Over 200MPH'. It is about him buying a Shelby Mustang GT 500. Takes the whole side of the album (remember those). If you are a gear head at all you should try and listen to it.
