Anyone have experience with any camera systems? I'm looking at getting one just for that little extra piece of mind since the baby is here now. I'm currently looking at a Swann 8 camera system at frys for $650. ( http://www.swann.com/s/products/view/?product=1163 )
I want a good 8 camera image and playback resolution thats not crummy. And want the email notifications and be able to see the live feed on my iphone. But I don't want to break the bank. (oh and have USB for network/offsite memory storage so if the DVR gets stolen or crashes I still have all the files) I know they have systems out there for like 2-3k but thats too far out of my league. I've looked at the demo's they have a frys and the one above was by far the best. But I know there is other stuff out there. Just curious if anyone else has any experience with something... Thanks! -Robert |

They logitech stuff gets good reviews when it works since it has a higher resolution, but the when it works may be the question. Look out for the really cheap stuff, ideally you want power over the video cable so you only have a single cable to deal with. If ethernet based then it should be power over ethernet and local power option for the wireless cameras. An all wireless camera system should be avoided, there aren't enough channels for video, and they will clog up your internet router if they are wifi. After that I haven't gone too far in my search for a decent inexpensive system. |

Go to safemart.com I have 2 retail stores and buy all my security systems from them. If you need help you can call them and they will point you in the right direction. Tech support comes with the purchase also. |

I was looking that the lorex 8 channel on there main site for $599 but the playback resolution is half of the "live" resolution. I want the playback to be atleast just as good as the live resolution. The ONLY way I'll do it is a hard-wired system. NO wireless for me, I don't trust the wireless stuff. Plus it's going to be a permanent install. I'll check out that site. Thank you all! |

Go wired. No batteries, no interference, etc. I'd rather have 2-3 hi def cams than 6-8 low res cams. ability to zoom in on video after the fact will make a difference. if you are on a budget, the high quality web cams can be linked together to do this too. several free apps (i'd need to look). following this for sure. |

I have been using the logitech for 2 years now with no problems. 6 cameras free e-mail/text alerts, and can monitor live with my android. If you pay the $70 a year you can playback via web along with other bells and whistles. The free service has worked fine for me. |

http://lorexstore.lorextechnology.com/product.aspx ?id=2088&nav=0 This is the lorex 8 camera system I was talking about. it records and plays back at 360x240 which is half of what the res of the unit I linked in the first post. I need them all to be weatherproof as they will all be outside too. Thanks for all the input! |

That 360x240 in night mode will be completely useless. The logitech has a unique feature in that you don't need to have a computer running all the time, they record to an SDHC card in the camera and you pull that video off into the computer. You can also leave a computer running all the time if you choose, and then there are the features mentioned. It will not be as cheap as that other system, but what good is the video if you can't see anything? I'll have to read on the logitech forums again to see if they worked out the bugs in the latest firmware. When I was looking a few months ago there was all kinds of trouble with the latest firmware and it basically turned me off to the whole system. They are a power line ethernet system, but I would probably go power over ethernet and run dedicated ethernet cable to each camera to make sure it works as it should. |

Lorex has many models the cameras we have the LD19 monitor all in one system 320 hard drive. I have are weatherproof but they have much better pan tilt and zoom cameras. I have fixed cameras. Most of the cameras on the lower end should still be rain protected. The higher end ones have enclosures. I bought my lorex at Costco dad got his on line. If you have a local dealer for which ever system you could go to the showroom and try them out. |

I'll have to see if there is a showroom close by. The lorex display at frys hasn't worked in the 2 months I've been looking at them. I definitely do not want a memory card in the camera itself, too easy for a burglar to snatch and grab. I'm wanting it recorded to a DVR PLUS have it sent to an outside source via the Internet. So even if someone finds the DVR, it's still in a file in some giant computer some where. Just an extra precaution. So far I'm really leaning towards the Swann system in my first post. |

Watching this intently... I'm security system illiterate basically, well, home system anyway. I would just need three, four cameras tops but aren't they motion activated? Can you turn them on and off or will we be tripping them every time we take the dog out? I want hardwired and I can keep everything, including computer hard drive in the attic, have power there also. I only carry a cell phone to talk on (seldomly) so sending it to a phone won't be necessary but sending it to a remote location does sound like a plus. Like I said I'll be watching this, and checking out all the links. |

I was told samsung has some good stuff too. they have a couple with 600 line cameras. the swann kit above has 480. a good bit of the cheaper ones are 400 to 420 lines. i'm not sure a hard drive would be best suited for a hot attic.... |
