There is a fund raiser for my step-granddaughter in three weeks, she just turned four and was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas.

The Sherwood Forest club is having a fund raiser and archery shoot. Us family members are going to help with food and parking, but I'm also thinking it might be fun to bring my bow and arrows.

Problem is that I haven't shot a bow in about ten years. Plus when I bought my bow around ten years ago I decided to switch to left hand due to my left eye dominance. And to complicate the issue, my bow is a 55Lb recurve, PSE Talon take-down 62" for those of you who know bows.

I have no idea how many arrows are typically shot at a shoot, but after grunting to get the string on the bow tonight and taking a couple practice pulls I think I'm going to be in trouble big time.

So, what's my best way to build up some strength or condition between now and June 18-19th without killing myself? I may just resign myself to prepping brats and burgers, but trying a few shots could be fun. And getting a lighter weight bow or a compound bow is out of the question (otherwise I'd be pinging Daves to set me up).

Also, what discussion sites do you like? I've been kicking around the idea again of trying some deer and turkey bow hunting later this year or next so I want to get some reading in.

Thanks in advance. Hopefully I won't be posting on June 20th about a pulled muscle or about an arrow in my foot.

Mike

you just gotta shoot. don't go crazy, but you have to get plenty of shots in. it's hard to say how many shot's you will take without knowing how the tournament is set up. i used to do leagues and tournaments in the '90's. typically, if we shot the fita target (i think), it was 3 shots, then go score the round. repeat for 15 rounds. sometimes we did a 5 spot, where we shot 5 arrows, then scored the round. repeated for 12 rounds. don't worry about the scoring. just have fun. it's for a worthy cause. btw, if you shoot lefty, be prepared to have a righty in your face.

If the weather cooperates then this will be an outdoor 3D shoot. The club has some property with woods and trails. I haven't looked too hard on their site yet for the number of stations they have.

Maybe I'll just take my bow and get it sighted in since I haven't even done that yet. I'd post a link but I'd want Blake's blessings first.

The small town or city I'm in has restrictions against archery in my own yard, otherwise I'd just set up a target next to the garage in the sideyard.

Sorry to hear about your grandaughter.

With this short of notice on the shoot I would agree, shoot the bow. 10-12 arrows at a session, a couple times a day between now and then is about your only option.
You can also do push up and pull ups or lat pulls to build up the shoulder and back muscles.

Most outdoor 3D shoots are about 40 shots, but, you will have several minutes between each shot so it's more like shooting once, 40 times.

The thing to keep in mind is it's supposed to be fun and since this shoot is for a fund raiser just have fun, fling some arrows. Be prepared to lose some!

If you give me your address I could probably round up some hats/stuff to donate?

Maybe pick up a cheap-o compound at wallyworld, so you can adjust your draw weight as you get those muscles working again?

Biggest thing I've found after I take a break from shooting isn't the popcorn sounds coming from my shoulders (my PT loved that in '08 after my wreck and subsequent severely torn rotator cuff)...it's the fingers. (I'm sorry..triggers are for...well, a word I probably can't put on badweb). My shoulders break back in within a few rounds (I shoot CAA Camp Archery Association 6 arrow targets out of habit; I used to teach as a counselor, growing up)...but my fingers...damn.

Old, worn out, not-good-for-Buelling anymore, riding gloves work well for shooting : )

And keep that elbow up!!

I picked up some event fliers to hang up around town and noticed that it states they have 50 stations. Fingers, yeah, going to be tough the Monday after on the keyboard.

I got a PM that mentioned some exercises and reminded me of kneeling rows with a dumbell to build shoulder strength. I'll have to check his links this weekend.

We spent the afternoon with her in Children's Hospital today and I took this pic with my cell phone as she was taking a nap while holding onto my finger.

The weather is looking like it will cooperate this upcoming weekend. I picked up a new shooting glove and an arm guard and found my arrows. I'm thinking I'll take a lap on Sunday when things should be slower, might sight in the bow on Saturday afternoon and see if I can at least hit a target.

Training has been superceded by other stuff so I'm just going to grunt it out.
