Yeah, everybody wants to be a trials bike pro. I just want one to dink around on in the woods and off the beaten path........ with a light weight bike(150 pounds). Seems like fun compared to a "regular" dirt bike. My 175 Honda is getting too old and valuable to beat up and is geared wrong to suit my type of off road riding.Found a 2005 Gas Gas 300 Pro for $3,000.00....."just ridden around the back yard". Decent shape and priced lower than most. New top end and fork seals. Low hours. Small dent in the gas tank. New rear fender that has not been put on yet. Is it normal for these type of bikes to wear out the engine that quickly? Seems a lot of them have been rebuilt in the 5 year old range.
"just ridden around the back yard" means it hasn't been to the Czech Republic for International Trials. The little engines revved high and hammered do tend to need care more often. Burn the candle brighter and it doesn't last as long. Looks like fun. ( my knees won't take that abuse anymore.)
That is a very nice SL-175...they didn't make very many of them...Trials is fun and isn't hard on your body unless you fall down...nothing like the beating you get from motocross...
Hey Zip- you oughta PM CityXslicker, ask him about the little bike/motorbike rig he's got- I'd have to dig through earlier posts to find it, but I still want one...
'taint no Chinese marketing, GasGas has been around for a long time.
I used to read some British trials web site, trials.co.uk or something like that. Had a fair amount of activity and links to regional U.S. stuff.
I've always wanted a trials bike, and a brakeless flat tracker, for no other reason than just because.
Check out Fantic and Montessa as well. I don't know what other companies are still in the trials game. Sort of a niche of a niche market. Finding an event is almost as hard as finding a bike.
OK Zip, looked it up, it's called a "SIKK"- the build fascinates me, basically a beefed-up mountain bike with a small Honda-type motor...
To me THAT would be fun! Seriously, check in with CityXslicker and ask him about it- last time he wrote about it he mentioned being able to stuff a 150-165cc motor in there, IIRC...
They're two strokes so a "rebuild" consists of nothing more than a piston and ring(s). I also think that these run a real lean gas/oil mixture of 50:1 or more.
I'd of loved to have one of those when I was a kid.
I need to do this before I'm too broken down to want to do it any more. The bike is about 100 miles from me..and I have no reason not to go give it a try ..........
still over 2oo lbs , too heavy for trials and the suspension is all wrong, I looked at that before buying the sikk.... what it does get is street legal and lights....
OK,I grabbed the thing up today for $2,700.Lots of "rubbing" on the bike, but not bent all to shit. Paint on the swing arm is like it was water color................nearly gone on nearly most of it and not from rubbing. Short stroke two stroke is fairly "stiff" to start...but runs great. Really odd to ride and will take some getting used to it all. Throttle is like an on/off switch....may have to get the slower throttle control or detune the motor a bit......but then, that bike was made for pros that need that kind of brutal response............I'm happy
..love that stuff even back in the late 60's seeing the likes of Sammy Miller..one of the godfather's of trials.Still never ceases to amaze me at the concentration/ balance and being able to do what they've been doing with those bikes...and the refinements of the trials bikes themselves.I,too, have wanted to dabble in it as well. Thanks for the vids...
