I am fascinated by how mathematics comes to play in visual and aural things. Lots of relationships that we don't think of but they are in our everyday life. And many of them occur in nature so no "thought" went into creating them.

I'm in the process of preparing for a fairly complex exam that includes several sections on lights and sound (as well as lots of physics, chemistry, trig and other hard sciences) and confess that the light and sound laws, which are very similar to many of the radiation calcs, fascinate me.

They also lend themselves to some awesome shortcuts if you've a keen memory.

I picked up a Nikon D90 last fall and have ben having a blast with it. My glass right now is limited to the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 prime and the 55-200mm VR. I like both lenses a lot ... I seem to use the prime most often for general use and low-light situations when I don't want to use my little SB-400 flash. If I want to throw things out of focus or need a little bit of reach I'll throw on the 55-200. I would REALLY like the 18-200mm VR II for its range and optical correctness throughout said range--I feel, especially for indoor events, that the 35mm and 55mm near ends of my glass are too far out.

If I had it me way (not my bank account's way), I would have the follows: 35mm f/1.8, 18-200mm VR II, and the 10-24mm for my wide angle needs. I'd be complete at that point. Or would I? : )

Wow - did a lot of catch up on this thread. I love the pics! I'm a growing photog - been at it for a few years. some good shots, lots of so-so ones.

I'm totally in for the class Dave!

I'm using an older D300 (non-s), and have a decent and growing collection of lenses.

I'm trying to keep my lenses full frame capable for the eventual upgrade. Finding myself getting a lot of used lenses on craigslist for a decent price.

currently -
Nikkor 50mm 1.4 (a favorite) older non hsm (used)
18-55 VR kit lens (used and <$90!)
18-200 VR (GF perma-stolen) (came with D300)
Sigma 28-80 2.8 (great walk around lens)
Tokina 11-16 2.8 (fun almost fisheye) (bought new and not FX'able)
Nikkor 70-300 ED (soft beyond 200mm - used on CL for <150 iirc)

My crown jewel currently (just got it couple months ago) - Nikkor 80-200 2.8 (non-VR, but not push pull). Amazingly sharp full range edge to edge. a bit slower than the VR and VR2 versions... but CL used and great price. More than i've ever paid for a lens (even used).

bit of a ramble... i love photography! And here's a favorite shot. A bit grainy, totally untouched and uncropped:

This is a favorite from St. Patricks in Dublin 2010. Handheld @ 11mm for 3/4 second. Not perfect, a bit noisy, but great memories!

Great shots, Rkc. I'm very green to photography, but is that playing with a bit of HDR and oversaturation (in a good way)? I like them.

Was that shot in Dublin using the Tokina, Sl33py?

Here's a couple of mine (critiquing is much appreciated if you have a minute to look!): http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v311/ski_merlin/ Artsy%20Fartsy/

Haven't played with the camera in a while, was walking into the house last night and thought this scene looked cool, so I ran in, grabbed the camera and slapped the 35mm 1.8 lens on it and snapped a few handheld...

I'm waiting for the day I can trade my 18-55 and 55-200mm for the 18-200mm VRII... someday...

Jeep - yep it was with my 11-16 Tokina.

I appreciate any suggestions or critiques as well. Here's the info on the shot:
Mar 18, 2010
4288×2848 pixels – 6594KB
Filename: DSC_1581.JPG
Camera: NIKON CORPORATION
Model: NIKON D300
ISO: 1250
Exposure: 0.7692308 sec
Aperture: 8.0
Focal Length: 11mm
Flash Used: No

I guess if i were to take the time to post process i might increase the black of the sky a bit... I'm an IT guy, but haven't worked in lightroom or aperture very much yet.

RKC - nice shots man. so PP effect for HDR? I can't imagine a 3 or 5 shot burst at that speed to get the dynamic range otherwise... I like the effect! I've been intrigued by HDR but haven't experimented yet.

This is what sold me on the D700 . . . .

quote:

The Nikon D700 is Nikon's, and the world's, best serious digital camera. The old professional D3 costs more and runs faster for sports, but the D700 is newer, smarter, smaller and lighter.

The D700 has image quality indistinguishable from the klunky old D3, both in terms of sharpness and at high ISOs. The D700 has the same superb 3" LCD, but handles even better than the old D3 better due to a new INFO button and smarter firmware. I own a D3, and I prefer the D700 except that the D700 lacks the 5:4 crop mode I often use (most people don't care).

Even at $8,000, the overpriced D3X isn't an improvement over the D3. Sorry rich people. The D3X is the same as the D3, except that it only has the same frame rate as the D700 (maybe even a little slower), and the D3X lacks the high ISO performance of either the D3 or D700.

Unless you're a full-time sports, news or action pro, the D700 replaces the D3 for studio, wedding, portrait, nature and landscape pros, as well as all advanced amateur photographers. (I'm a very strict grader for what defines a pro; everyone else is amateur.)

From Ken Rockwell

The concession I made was that I bought it used from a hippie in New York. . . . great camera, never looked back and I may be one of the toughest on cameras in terms of physical abuse.

What programs are you folks using to put the watermark (c) on the images?

As to Nikon, I had the list narrowed down to the D7000, but I keep getting drawn back to the Canon 60D for some reason (may be something to do with the thousands of rolls of film I ran through a couple of film SLR Canons in the past). And I'd really like to have a 5Dmk2, but way out of my reach.

I have added to my crappy lens collection by picking up film Canon EOS's with lenses just for the lenses. My thinking is that it is better to have a crappy lens than no lens. Plus the crappy lenses will allow me to zero in on what focal lengths and speeds I really need when the time comes up upgrade to better glass.

Current crappy lens inventory:
1. Canon 75-300mm, which will help me decide if this general focal range will work for me as a walk-around lens.
2. Vivitar1 100-400mm, this super-crappy lens will help me decide if I can live with a 300mm max reach or if I'll want the 400mm+ range.
3. Two Sigma 35-80mm lenses, which must have been the budget lens option to the kit lens when the EOS film cameras were new. These will help me decide if I need wider than 35mm on a crop dSLR body, and will also help me decide if I need to reach beyond 80mm with a walk-around lens.
All of these I should be able to sell for what little I have into them.

I already know I eventually want something in the 10mm range on a crop body, probably one of the 10-22mm or so wide zooms.

I currently have my velodrome bicycle (w/ Campy group on it) up for sale in hopes of converting the basement hanging bike into a neck hanging camera.

ps, I don't really want to see the rest of the "money" shots. But I do like the reflections of Court the Photographer in his sunroof as he is focusing on taking a pic of the bridge instead of focusing on his infamous NYC driving.

Nice pics to all.
