Dobypaw - we've been running an eBay account since they opened with "Top Rated Seller", "Power Seller" and 100% feedback rating. We use the money to fund our habits... motorcycles and adventures. There's still a good market for antiques and vintage items. Probably enough to make a living if you buy the right items.

We have health insurance through our employers. Our deductible is $10K and we pay 80% after that. Our monthly premium is over $600.00 after employer contribution.

I have a big problem with unions getting all these exceptions from the new health care bill. I get tired of public unions showing their "can't live without us" attitude. Unions are ruining the landscape of America. Fact is fact, but I'm not a hater. I've often wondered why if you disagree with the left you're automatically a hater. My problem with unions are based on experience, facts and principle.

Daves is 100% correct about starting a business. As long as you keep coming up with all the reasons why you can't succeed then you never will and probably should stay working for someone else. If you can get past all your self-imposed hurdles you might find out what all of the ultra successful people have found... a bad economy is a good place to start a business.

Just sayin'.

>>> I figured it out I will pay about $8,000 to $10,000 a year for insurance when I am us to paying $46 a week plus my co-pays. It will be like taking a 12% cut in pay

Your assumption is that you need the same extravagant coverage that you now enjoy. You don't. All you need is to protect yourself from bankrupcy. I pay $130/mo for my medical insurance. Annual deductible is $5000 in plan, $10,000 out of plan, then it covers 100%.

My premium will soon likely go way up due to the fraud known as Obamacare as it mandates coverage for women cost the same as for men, I'll be subsidizing the health insurance of women. I'm not okay with that.

It's a risk vs. reward thing. You can't take the risk because you can't be in a position where your children might suffer if things go south. I completely respect that. I hope things work out for you.

quote:

I see the old timers at GE sit on their ass and do nothing. I myself bust my ass at work

And yet you are pro-Union? Why? Perhaps you fail to make the connection between cause-and-effect. You should get a raise and the butt-sitters should be fired. This herd mentality destroys initative and entrepreneurial spirit.

Do I really sound like a hater to you?????? I am on your side and wish to see you succeed. This is from one Bueller to another.

He said he hates old timers? I think what he is saying is that he loathes loafers. Apparently some of them are old timers.

I heard the same complaint from a good friend who retired from GM. He complained about the loafers to the union boss, but the union boss informed him that it was okay since it was better to have more union membership.

Doby, do yourself a favor and leave GE. You are just one cog in a wheel with over 300,000 cogs (hard to tell exactly how many GE employs through its subsidiaries).

Chances your talents will go unrecognized. Working hard and watching others goof off for the same pay at the end of the week will make you angry and resentful.

Find a company that is small enough to allow you rise to the level of your abilities. Ask prospective employers if they'll place any limits on the amount of work you can do and the money you'll earn (obviously difficult to do if the company is signatory to a union).

Finally, even though your family's welfare is a huge concern, the LAST item of your interview should be about health benefits. When I'm talking to job applicants if the first words out of their mouth is "What kind of benefits do you have?", the interview is over. I may smile and talk with them for a few more minutes but I've already decided there's no way in hell they'll ever work for me.

Good luck and as it's been said before, there's no shame in being an employee. I have several who have been here over 20 years (we've been around since 1979).

Hootowl is right. That is the path most people take and there's nothing wrong with that choice.
But it is a choice(your choice) so quit whining about the "Big,Bad,Evil,Greedy Company" without them you would not have the secure job and benefits.

And the "they could die" comment was uncalled for.

This is turned into an interesting sub-thread. doby seems like a good guy and has the potential to learn. He has been fed a line of bullsh*t by the union (and management) for many years but still works hard while resenting that he has looter and moocher co-workers. Eventually, the path of unionism that eschews responsibility and cooperation will lead to the destruction of his job. I was a Teamster for four years and it was mostly a positive experience. They still permitted management to motivate the slackers.

I have stated before arguing with a few of you guys, is like pissing into the wind... You continue to assume you know what is going on here in NY and you think you know what will happen. I only gave about 10% of the story... All I ask is For a good wage which I have and good medical which I am losing...upper management has 100% free medical coverage with travel expenses. so the medical we have now is not to much to ask for. Talk about hypocrites GE's upper management telling us our medical is to expensive all the while they get it free!!! Don't you agree they should have the same coverage as they are offering us and lower management? If you disagree with that you are person who has an argumentitive personality and someone I would not ant to be around... Now piss off I'm done!

The biggest obstacle to Doby's success is Doby himself but it's much easier to blame upper management.

I'll go piss off now. There are much more constructive uses for my time.

WOW! I was working all day, but was thinking about you and this thread. There's been some great advice given, but you seem hell bent on turning those folks into bad guys. I really don't understand that at all. No doubt, all of us only know what you have shared about your situation. Everyone's situation is different and filled with it's own challenges. I'm short on time right now, but tomorrow may share some detail on what's worked very well for me without starting my own business. I've come very close a couple of times, but for various reasons never pulled the trigger. It's not for everybody. Silly me I actually enjoy doing the "dirty" work. That's why I've passed on management offers numerous times. I plan on retiring in the next few years (more or less depending on the direction the country is heading) with a net worth in the 1.75 - 2 million range. I have my doubts that you are open to any options that go against your ideology though.

You are hearing from real folks who have lived what they are talking about. None of us have any vested interest in your success or failure. You might want to consider some of what is being said. I'll post more details if you seem open to hearing it.

Gee, I work for a Union shop too. Upper management gets amazing bonuses while the company loses $billions.

Middle upper management is running around messing with everyone under them to look like they are useful. They just hurt productivity. And foster an attitude problem that gets worse daily. After all, if you KNOW the new paperwork you have to fill out has no purpose but to keep some jerks little empire in the company going, it casts doubts on the judgment of other obvious bad decisions. ( you KNOW it's useless since the exact same data is logged in the computer system. You know, you logged it. ) Most of the old guy deadwood is gone, on the actual doing work level. They insist that management also had drastic cuts.... too bad they got rid of the smart and less egomaniacal ones.

If I had 27 years to retirement, I'd be gone. But I've got 18 years in and I'm hoping they ( Congress ) won't steal my 401k and promise me an annuity. ( it HAS been proposed )

Also. Quit picking on service workers. They work hard, mostly. Just because their unions tend to be marxist power hungry thugs, is no reason to dislike the teachers, police, and others in public service. Remember it's not the kids, or the future, it's the power.

( if you want to be mad at the teachers for not teaching actual history and indoctrinating your kids with anti-capitalist propaganda, go ahead. But it's probably not their fault. I've been kicked out of PTA meetings more than once for politely ( no, really ) asking questions that really torque them.

Like "We've known for about a half century that "whole word" reading instruction is time wasting, painful to the students, and fosters a bad attitude towards school. So why are you still using it, while others get rich selling Phonics discs to the parents? I realize everyone should know how to read by first grade, but it's a small town and the poor parents were taught not to read by you guys not 6 years ago, so I don't blame them..." One time I got half the PTA humming the "International" as the Deputies escorted me out.

Big O is at it again. The White House is trying to pass rules that anyone bidding for a federal government contract has to disclose their political contributions.

To quote the great one: "Wow".

This is another Sovietization of American ideals. It is ones ability to get the job done, not who you favor that is important. This is a sword that swings in the direction of whoever is in power at the time. Obama is developing a paranoia reminiscent of Nixon.

>>>>Doby you need to forget the word Cant

I doubt that he can. I know the tone of voice and it saddens me. These are the folks waiting for all the pieces to fall into their "perfect" places. . everything to be "just right" . . before they will take any risk.

In many ways I feel sorry for these folks. They have conscripted themselves to what can only be called modern day slavery. They live under the impression that the purpose of government and unions is to "care for them". Their life's quest becomes a lower deductible. They've been effectively neutered, robbed of aspirations, goals, dreams and the willingness to do whatever it takes to pursue a dream. . having traded those for whatever someone else decides they feel like sharing with them. They think starting in a business is akin to the Ohio State March Band stepping off to a Sousa march. . . everything lines up, is pretty and perfectly choreographed.

When I went into my own business I guess it was the entrepreneurial equivalent of being tossed from the bridge on a first swimming lesson.

I'd just started construction on a new house, had kid #2 on the way and lost my job. It'd be great if starting that machine shop had an opening stanza with all notes in perfect major thirds . . . life's not like that. My success, which many magazines attributed to various things the year I got the Small Business of the Year Award, was . . . just between you and I . . . largely motivated by fear. At each twist an turn in this thread when we were treated to the reason why something would not work . . . I confess all I saw were ways to make it work.

I had two kids . . . bills to pay . . . and a family to care for . . and the princely sum of $3,200 to do something . . anything with . . . until I was on my ass.

That's powerful motivation.

Like Doby . . I had kids, doctor's bills and a wife . . . all depending on me.

What the kids learned was that when the chips were down Dad didn't whine and he didn't need anything beyond hard work, dedication and confidence.

Don't get me wrong . . .I went to the union and asked for help starting my business but I was the bosses son in my prior job and they laughed at me.

I was on my ass and on my own. Either I rowed that boat or the son of a bitch sunk.

The kids learned the value of hard work, education, perseverance, to get along with a wide variety of personality types, work ethics and situations. I attribute, perhaps I'm wrong, the fact that both of them are doing better than I ever, in my wildest dreams, could have thought of . . . to what they saw.

I didn't teach them I was scared.

I didn't blame anyone for my job or loosing it.

I didn't "seek" victims . . . I went after opportunity.

Pretty much same thing happened in the USMC and in many areas of my life since. Folks form habits and kids see them. It builds character.

I tend to find these types of folks too. I've a friend in Wisconsin who took a damned site tougher route than I did and to this day . . .knows how to live on $0.00 . . he can pick dandelions in a field and make soup, he can grind his own flour from grain picked from a field behind a farm house and make bread. Success arrived slower than he'd intended but failure never even got within sight of the door.

I look at a couple of the names in this thread and I don't have to go far to see about a dozen folks to whom these experiences and events would simply be intuitive. I never met JB1 but I know that type of person. I'm betting he never waited on anyone to fill his soup bowl.

People are funny.

Some are filled with joy . . seeing each day full or opportunity . . what they can do is never limited by their talent, only by time. . . . we each get the same number of hours in a day that Bach, Picasso and Einstein had.

We can shine and create or we can blame and wait.

Choose wisely. . . . your kids are watching.

Standing ovation x 2!

Learn to embrace the suck and learn from it. It is quite easy to do when failure isn't an option. I had to downsize my forward looking outlook from the typical 2, 3 & 5 year view to the 2 hour, 3 hour and maybe 5 days. The contracts keep coming in and often they are very last minute. Hard work and perseverance has kept me, and mine, fed since the day I started working for me.

I wouldn't have it any other way.
