Im pretty new to dirtbikes but I had this thought/question yesterday - is it possible to run a dirtbike with no battery? I was thinking of things like generators and gokarts, no batteries, just didnt know if the engines in dirtbikes were any different and needed the battery. I do have a dirtbike currently, it has a battery, but its got electric start. Im on no other bike sites except this one, so thought I'd ask here Yall have a good night go |

I would look into battery eliminator kits. All they give you is a big capacitor to take the battery's place. |

Gunut, thanks, its not something Im looking into doing to my motorcycle, just didnt know if a properly setup (carb) motorcycle with a kickstart could run fine with no battery. I'll be honest, it was one of those 'crazy world disaster' thoughts - if an EMP attack came or something, would a dirtbike still work fine? It was that sort of thing that led me to this question Sorry, I like historical books, biographies/autobiographies etc etc....and zombie and apocalyptic stuff. blame the books |

I ride my Yamaha Zuma (50cc) every day with no battery. Blinkers some times blink faster or slower than they're supposed to.. but oh well. Losing the battery on that little thing was a huge % weight loss. |

most "true" dirt bikes dont have batteries, the dual sport and some more trail oriented bikes have batteries. |

it is very common for a motor to run without a battery, it uses a magneto to generate spark. there is enough energy generated that you can run a headlight and some signals off it too, just don't short across your 'spark' lead if it allready has a battery, you'll need something, like a capacitor as stated above, to replace it |

Batteries on durt bikes are a relatively new thing really. Most 2 stroke dirt bikes never had batteries/lights/starters and just needed a good kick into life. Batteries have only started to get common on off road bikes since electric start and fuel injection/fuel pumps/lights and other techno frippery etc started to appear A few years ago I had a mental Alfer 250cc 2 stroke Supermoto that was road registered but had no battery or ignition switch. I had to chain it to the local Pit Bull whenever I left it anywhere

None of my dirt bikes have batteries. Two risks that I have figured out: 1) The battery is like a big spring and absorbs energy. Without it, your voltage regulator takes much more of a beating. That being said, I haven't lost one yet. 2) If you are on the street and the motor dies, you have no lights. This was an issue on my dual sported street legal KLR-250, not so much on the pure dirt bikes. |

Most lawn mowers don't have batteries...although the newer "high society" ones do. Can't imagine not having the gumption to start a push mower, yet still have enuf energy to push it around the yard. |

My first street-legal bike was a KLR250. It was a kick start so the battery it had was pretty damn small. I allowed it to die because, you know, I kickstart it and the lights come on. After a while of this, it REALLY died and kinda dragged my charging circuit down to 8V. It ran fine since the ignition was separate from the charging system. I removed the battery from the bike and ran like that for a while. The only bad thing with running with no battery was that the tach didn't work right. I finally gave up and got the $17 battery from walmart In hindsight, I think if I added a large capacitor, I would wager that the tach and flashers would have worked fine. |
