100-400L is a very nice lens, most things that i hear negative of it is the variable aperture and the odd push-pull zoom.

A friend has one, and lets me borrow it, I like it.
It's not a small lens, but comparatively it is for the reach that it has.

Is this the 100-400 lens you're referring to?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/162616-USA/C anon_2577A002AA_100_400mm_f_4_5_5_6L_IS_USM.html

Remembering back to how I used my 35mm film cameras I think the 17-40mm would wind up being my workhorse lens, so as long as I could afford it I'd probably pay for the durability.

Correct lens in the link.

My equip which fits me nice:
24-70 f2.8 (Sigma)
70-200L f4 (Canon)
50 f1.8 (Canon)
1.4x Converter (Canon)

There are times that I wish I had more reach, but this works great for 90% of the time.

If you are shooting FX format . . . your choice of GREAT is limited to one lens . . . but . . . if you are in DX there are a host of really good ones.

The 12-24mm is the one by which all other ultra wides are measured . . . you can't believe how sharp this is until you see it.

Are reviews like this one any cause for concern?

http://darwinwiggett.wordpress.com/2009/11/11/the- canon-7d/

For what I want to do I believe I want a sharp image. And if I want softer images I'll want to add that effect on my own.
If this means I have to save a little longer then I'll look into the Lumex stuff for the interim time.

No worries from that review.
Make sure it has the latest firmware and all will be good.

There were some hit and miss focusing issues going around when it was very first released, and in that article they even say it was "soon to be released", they were fixed early on with an update.

Would there be any interest in a "make better pictures" series? I have been toying with doing this on my blog - still trying to work out the HOW of showing examples of great photos without copyright infringement - but it would be fun to do. I would redo my lectures from the basic photo class I taught for years into a blog format.

Whata y'all think?

The part I've always wanted to know is what the photographer was thinking when they composed/took the photo. What's the thought process of great photographers (like you and Dangerdave) before they snap the shutter Do they have all the techie stuff (F stop, shutter speed, depth of field, etc) running through their mind? Are they focused more on composition than anything else? Deciding when to use a fill flash? And so many other things.

I've taken some really nice photos over the years and I'd be hard pressed to say that more than just few were more than just dumb luck. Well that and the philosophy that if I take enough....at least one will come out that is passable.

I could probably sit for days and learn from pros. As my Dad would say, "Whoop it on me".
Thanks

I'll give it a shot.

Say it, one of the goals for me is always to NOT think about the camera. The less thinking and the more seeing I so the better. BUT most of that "not thinking" comes from making the choices needed automatically by much practice. Sorta like a baseball player, he is not thinking about much when he is hitting BUT much practice has imprinted the though into the neurons.

I barely use the options on my Canon DSLR, I have not practiced enough to use them without thinking. On my old OM-4 cameras I would pick settings without thinking or looking, just push the right button.

I'll start working up my lecture notes, shoot for one "lecture" a week for 15 weeks. You guys will get homework.

Best I heard was:

"The best camera is the one that gets out of your way."

Michelangelo would not have been any less brilliant with a different brush or chisel.

A camera is nothing but a tool, and it's only purpose is to 'see' what you see, both in the real world and in your mind.

My advice would be not to pay attention to the gadgety gizmos - mine can be set to "miniature" mode, where it blurs the top and bottom of the frame to make whatever you take a picture of look like its tiny and using a macro lense. Who flippin' cares.

And simple things go a long way. I won't buy a camera without a spotmetering mode (now common... used to be hard to find).

Put the spot on the center of interest (usually the eyes on a person), push half way down on the shutter button to lock in focus and exposure, then reframe, and push the shutter button the rest of the way down.

I do it without even thinking now, and my pictures are nearly always perfectly exposed.

Dave,
I'm in! Yeah I haven't been hanging out on badweb much, too much time spent taking pictures with my Canon 7D and assortment of lenses http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshuaandrews/ and www.joshuaandrewsphotography.com

... I see you guys have been talking gear. a Tamron 28-75 is on my camera most of the time, but my other lenses all see equal use:
Canon 10-22 (see this)
Canon 50 1.4 (used for the above shot)
Canon 100 2.8 L IS
Canon 70-300 DO IS

Next up: Samyang manuals lenses. 14mm and 85mm. Or maybe the Sigma 85 1.4, or the Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS with the extender or ...

Gonna get a D3000 soon .. some advice?

I found one at Best Buy that will come with a better lens and 3 year warranty plus they'll clean my lens for free 3 times in 3 years. All for 600. Or I could get one for about 350 slightly used off of Craigslist. Comes with original lens. What do you guys think?

What's the 'better' lens and do you still get the kit lens?

I bought my D3000 new on Amazon a few months back for $475 with the 18-55mm VR kit lens. That wasn't the best price I could find, but I had a $50 credit at Amazon I needed to use, and with that it was the best deal ($425 said and done). I picked up a 50mm prime and 55-200mm VR used but in very good shape with some extras (filters and such) for about $350 (I'm going off memory) from a couple members here on the BadWeB.

Those prices sound about right, depending on what the upgraded lens is.
