Harold Rogers aka "Hodakaharold" here on Badweb had an unfortunate encounter with one of our famous pasture rats Tuesday evening just after sundown on K7 hiway about 7 miles south of his Fort Scott home. According to witnesses (school bus returning with the local HS golf team+ other motorist)Harold hit the deer while traveling at about 60 mph and literally cut it in half with his XB Lightning. Kansas HP said he slid down the hiway/shoulder on his back 200+ feet ending up in the road side ditch full of mud and water and his Buell traveled a bit further. I visited with Harold in his room at the hospital this morning to show him the pics I took earlier of his bike at the tow service. His injuries are a broken right wrist and a lot of bruising, no road rash what so ever. Harold hopefully expects to be discharged from the hospital this afternoon. Couple pics of his Xb,Amazing how little damage done to the bike(Harold also) considering what they both went through.
This ones kinda nasty.

>>>>K7 hiway about 7 miles south of his Fort Scott home. Yikes . . . As a former resident of 502-1/2 South Crawford Street in Fort Scott, KS (while building the La Cygne Power Plant) I know the area well . . . those deer are REAL deer not like the ones we have here in NY that look like large dogs. Glad to see him smiling and the bike coming through relatively unscathed. So . . who harvested the venison?

No road rash - must have been the deer hide! "Amazing how little damage done to the bike(Harold also) considering what they both went through." What, the deer? I'm joking only cuz it sounds like there were no serious injuries ('cept the bisected bambi). Heal well! |

Wow, I got really luck a few days ago. I clipped a deer on a back road here in Germany. Just shock my handlebars a bit and that was it. No damage and I didn't go down. Deer just got up and went on it's way. Looking back, it didn't scare or shake me up at all. Just kinda startled me really because of how fast it happened. Glad I was slowing down because I was entering a town up ahead. Hope the above man will be ok and heal up quick. |

"considering what they both went through." The wrecker operator told me they found in the mess strewn down the hiway... a fawn, the 150lb-ish doe was about 5 months thru her 6 month gestation period. Harold needs to buy some deer tags. (Message edited by Jramsey on May 05, 2011) |

Harold, glad you are OK. The bike does not look to bad. The forest preserves here around the Chicago area are overrun with deer. They have tried to thin the herds but the animal rights people alway put a stop to it. Having a deer run in front of me is a big concern around here. Last year I rounded a corner at speed in Southern Indiana when two deer jumped right into the middle of my lane. Nothing I could do except aim and hope. I aimed between the two and luckily they leaped away in opposite directions clearing my path. Got my attention for the remainder of the day! |

Did he get to keep the deer? That'd make an awesome full body mount with a motorcycle tire coming through the middle. It'd be great for the garage or shop. |

thanks everyone, just sore all over, broken wrist, helmet truly saved my life, riding jacket did too, no roadrash, after i quit sliding on my back in the mud, my first thought was if the bike wasn't hurt, i can do that again. AMA flat tracker Jim Odom said that after getting off at a Indy roadrace in 1970. That came to mind when accessing everything laying in the ditch, Jramsey almost hit a huge buck when we were coming back from Cycle Connection a year and half ago, Should have taken a clue from that and stopped riding at night. |

Having a deer run in front of me is a big concern around here. Same thing in Iowa. Too many forest rats, but "DON'T SHOOT BAMBI!!!!!" seems to have a lot of sway. You know, because Bambi dying from starvation and disease because they've overpopulated badly and can't find anything to eat over the winter is SO much better. Glad you're OK, glad the helmet & jacket worked as advertised! |

If it were my bike, I'd fix the handful of broken bits but NEVER clean that muffler off. That's one hell of a battle scar! Glad to see you came out virtually unscathed. Proof that gear does work.. |

Glad you're ok! Gear is good, I know first hand as well. I gotta say, the first pic with the hanging turn signals looks kind of like eyeballs dangling from their sockets. Looks like a cartoon. |

If it were my bike, I'd fix the handful of broken bits but NEVER clean that muffler off. I can just see Jramsey and one of his buddies all suited up and ready to ride while the bikes are idling. *sniff*sniff* "Hey James, is it me or does your bike smell like venison? Man, I'm gettting hungry." |

Wow, amazing how little damage occurred. Deer are all over the place in Minnesota, too. Have had a couple gallop down the street next to the training range in Duluth during class. Mid-day nonetheless. Not in Kansas anymore (or Florida), Dorothy. Two of the MN based coaches I worked with last summer have hit deer on motorcycles. One has hit three, on three separate occasions. The other hit a deer on his commute into teach a class, bike went down, his gear got covered with "deer stuff", but his bike, a Victory, was relatively unscathed, and he rode it to class, then the 60 miles home after teaching the class. Words of wisdom garnered from talking to these guys: "If you cannot avoid a direct hit, aim for the deers butt. Avoid the head. The behind is much softer, not the steering part, and has no antlers." Sounds like wise advice, indeed. Ride safe, Buellers! B. |

Glad he's OK, more or less. And the bike looks fixable. Deer are one the main reason I why hate to ride at night. Along with Cows, drunks, and other critters with and not that are out. |

They are sterilizing the creatures around here, as opposed to just increasing the number of doe tags issued each year. Millions spent on deer birthcontrol It is surprising how little damage seems to have been done to the bike. Time for a headlight upgrade since they are wrecked. |

Insurance company is telling me that the salvage is $1,350.00 and it is a total loss, I was hoping it wasn't that bad, finding an XB to replace may be tough in my area. They also wrote an estimate for over $5,300.00, I am waiting on final figures for total loss. |
