Racist, I don't know Blake many of the people I run into talk about black people in code, "those people" are lazy and only get jobs because of .... Obama is taking care of "his people". Some of the public pronouncements of tea party people are blatantly racist. This country has come a long way from lynching BUT we still have a long way to go. In my last 20 years of working I can't remember a single black person in a position of authority in any company I have worked for. Makes me wonder why. Not saying that everyone that dislike Obama is a racist, far from it, but many are. And this board tolerates things being said about him that are simply lies, slanders and libels. He is no more dishonest than Bush. I'd say he far more honest, he hasn't lied to get us involved in a stupid costly, pointless war. If I said the things about Bush that are said about Obama I would have been told that saying those things was not acceptable here. Yet people call him a traitor, a communist, a terrorist and accuse him of simply terrible things THAT ARE NOT TRUE AND HAVE NO BASIS IN FACT and it is OK? I am sorry he displayed that certificate. There is no reason to show it, every bit of evidence available indicated that he was born in Hawaii. I wish he had let the birthers continue there hysterical, insane, campaign. Funny how the Voting Rights Act of 1964 was passed on the votes of Republicans against the bitter objection of quite a number of Democrats. Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" stopped paying welfare if a man (husband or boyfriend) was in the home. Nice way to break up families, black or white, run the father out. I was watching the 6 hour epic "Gettysburg" the other evening. General Longstreet gave the pensive comment, "Perhaps we made a mistake, not freeing the slaves before firing on Fort Sumpter . . ." That's happened in many cities. When the number of people who pass a test of a certain race don't match the desired number.... make the test easier. That's racism. Consider, you are a racist that hates black people, and are in a position of power. You might pass laws to break up the black family, put large numbers in jail for trivial offenses to rob them of future employment. Manipulate tax and zoning laws to concentrate them in ghetto's and remove manufacturing from cities to cut back on the chances of blacks getting jobs. An education system that teaches not history, or math, but self esteem and resentment for sins done a century ago would be devastating, too. You might if you were an evil guy. So, how would you have done so better than the Dem controlled congress from WW2 to the Clinton admin? Just a thought experiment.... | ||

Blake, Wisconsin people used to throw rocks at Indians who went out spear fishing after a State decision that they could assert their treaty rights to subsistence fishing in their ceeded territories. See "Walleye Wars" by Walter Bressette. Northern Wisconsin in particular is still very racist. I never knew if I had to knock on a door if I would get a rifle in my face if they found out I worked for one of the Tribes. That was the main reason, that after four years, even though I loved my work there, I had to get out of northern Wisconsin... I could not stand to date any more red neck, ignorant, bigoted men. Fortunately things have gotten somewhat better... no thanks to the State, but through a painful process of realizing that we all wanted to protect our natural resources from outside threats. As far as Obama being an angry dude... I really do not get that... because he is an ally of the working class poor, because the working class poor are predominately non-white (African American, Latino, etc) he is called a racist and a marxist... it is all bullcrap to me. I met Obama in 2007 in Iowa, and IN PERSON, he has an air of calm and of ease that puts people on an equal level with him... his strongest asset is that he can actually relate to anyone... because he came from a broken home, because he grew up in turmoil, because he didn't spend his youth in friggin Martha's Vinyard (like Hillary Rodham Clinton who is one of the biggest snobby hypocrites in politics I know of). I have seen Barack's ability to connect to other people in person and it is infectious... his process of self-acceptance concerning his heritage has been a very public one as well... he totally rejects the extreme militant views of the civil rights movement as propogated by Malcom X and others when he is in high school because he sees anger and negativity as the dead end street that it is... he discusses this at some length in his first book... if he did not explore that and address that he would be considered hypocritical himself... The reality is that upper class (predominately white corporate males such as the trumpster) are very very threatened by him because they feel he will take away their "rights" to unlimited profits... their so called "freedoms" to make billions of dollars... and do nothing to improve society as a whole... HENCE the attack on his QUALIFICATIONS... has any other President been told by some wacko millionare that he has to now show us his transcripts? Is Obama classist? Yes. That, in and of itself is not grounds to call him a marxist or a socialist. Is he racist? I don't know, but I don't really think so... Has he used the fact that he is half black to his advantage? Yes. I would. Some would not, but I would. As he put it pretty aptly himself... "If you are walking down the street in South Chicago and a cop pulls up... you are black... the cop will not give a damn if you are half black." Trying to determine which political party screwed something up is like trying to find the squeak in the trunk of a Ford . . . . just about the time you're sure you've found it . . damn thing starts again. Based solely on what I see . . . the idiots in the largest millionaires club are uniformly distributed among parties. Obama . . . regardless of what party he is affiliated with . . is an embarrassment to everything that Americans believe. I had dinner with a friend of his the other night . . . Dean of his school who has his transcripts and aligns with him politically. Traditionally, when there are trigger points for higher taxes, people who are in danger of going past the trigger by just a bit will stop or defer income to keep from tripping the higher rates. And we are hugely in debt why? Couple of trillion in unfunded wars, an unfunded RX benefit and unfunded tax cut. Folks I agree we need to fix the problem BUT taxes need to be on the table. We need to reduce spending, start by taking a trillion out of the military budget and raise some revenue. cutting discretionary domestic spending ain't gonna do it. Limiting what we are willing to pay for medicare and medicaid will help a lot BUT if don't come up with some way to rein in health care inflation we will simply end up with old poor people. It will help SS of course as they will die younger without decent healthcare. And don't give me the old "the free market" will fix it argument. No body in this debate has proposed a real free market solution. Ryan's pal REQUIRES people to buy insurance which I thought was the problem with Obama's plan. Until we all are willing to admit that health care is a scarce good just like beach front property and that it will be rationed in some way we won't be able to solve the problem. We have been kicking the can down the road on HC for decades. These costs are driving pretty much ALL the problems with local and national budgets. Private companies have been "solving" this by reducing coverage and raising prices to the workers. Has not slowed this down at all. | ||

As already stated, this controversy is 100% of Obama's making. It was deliberate. Everyone should be chastising him for allowing this division amongst Americans but it was a political calculation on Obama's part. Personally, I think this was a losing battle that should never have fought by the so-called "birthers". Score one for the Away team. Transparency and Unity, indeed. That NYT opinion piece was pure BS and reinforces my belief that the New York Post is Pulitzer Prize material in comparison. Now back to you "raise the taxes" folks. I agree with you! Those 47% of taxpayers who pay no taxes at all or get a tax credit, need to shoulder the burden. The demonization of the rich is nothing but a code word for raising the taxes of the Middle Class. Your screeching will be raised to ear bleeding levels when the unintended consequences of your misguided beliefs come back at you. And me.  And stop the Bush whacking.
