Ah, that old chestnut.

The oil companies are churning out oil as fast as the environmentalists will let them. There is NOT a supply problem. Direct your angst towards the speculators who are setting the price.

SOO glad I bought oil stocks Americanxb you can too. All of our companies should be making record profits. I ll bet oil stocks are in your retirement mutuals funds of the pension fund your counting on to retire. Profit by excelling at what you do is something to be proud of! One of the Ten Commandments Do not Covet what is not yours. If you want oil profits earn them get in the oil and gas business ask Cowboy or Blake its dirty dangerous hard work. If you can get it off the ground these days near impossible you deserve the billions you would earn.

Instead of coveting others wealth set about learning how to get your own. Talk to SCORE find a mentor successful men will help you if you let them. Try to steal by a G word a gun or a government and you will find men like Reardon I ll burn it to the ground before I let you steal my lifes work. In short want a better life start by improving yourself!

Awesome. Thanks once again Court. You just never fail to come up with a doosie : )

Want to know when it will stop? Only when people here in the US start dieing, will it possibly* get better. But don't count on it. When trucks are getting jacked daily and their driver killed. When riots break out at gas stations, and people start shooting eachother over a tank full.

I'm only 35. Yet in my 35 years, I've learned a thing or two. One of those things is people in this country will bitch and complain all day long. And little will be done. It takes people dieing. Death. Pure and simple, bodies in the street, before things really start to get done. When school kids in middle america start getting hit in the cross fire over gasoline disputes, things might stand a chance of getting better. If this really sounds pessimistic think about it. It is a sad fact and reality of today.

It cost me real close to $20 to fill by bike now. It's my only transportation and gets 40-50 mpg on a good day. Hey BO!, what do you want me to trade it in on?

A couple of points worth making.

* Last time Exxon was making record profits they also paid record taxes, at least if you believe corporations pay taxes. I bet they are paying huge amounts of taxes this year too. The tax the rich crowd should be pleased with that.

* The ROI for oil companies really isn't that big. They are among the biggest corporations in the world. By that simple definition they have some of the largest amounts of capital invested. When they win they win big. When they lose they also lose big. On a percentage basis the profits are actually lower than many other investment opportunities.

* Trying to re-level the playing field to prevent these "huge" profits will make the ROI even less attractive, causing less investment (that means future oil), and will lead to even higher inflation rates as energy costs necessarily skyrocket (anyone know who said that in recent years?).

I was getting a hair cut the other day and the lady doing the cutting started in on this. She seemed to think that the oil companies should be offering gas at a lower price because they were making too much profit. As much as I wanted to explain how the world works I let it go. I told my wife about it though. She said I should have offered to pay her half price for the hair cut because I really think they are making a profit. I really wish I would have thought of that when it was time to pay. Maybe she could have understood.

Taxes COME from profits.

What are WE supposed to do? What would you recommend?

I say LET THEM. Fuel is a pretty finite asset for these folks. Use less is what "WE" are going to do.

Live close to work, reduce consumption. You do NOT want the Government deciding to punish a business - remember that axe can cut ANY tree. You should use extreme caution - be careful what you wish for, you MIGHT GET IT.

How much do oil companies make on a gallon of gas?

quote:

For every gallon of gasoline, diesel or finished products we manufactured and sold in the United States in the last three months of 2010, we earned a little more than 2 cents per gallon.

http://www.exxonmobilperspectives.com/2011/04/27/g as-prices-and-industry-earnings-a-few-things-to-th ink-about/

Prices right now in my are is about $4.27. So we could demand that the oil companies not make any money, putting them out of business and still only have gas down to $4.25. Seems worth while to me.

Also from the same link...

quote:

ExxonMobil is one of the largest taxpayers in the United States
Last year, our total taxes and duties to the U.S. government topped $9.8 billion, which includes an income tax expense of $1.6 billion. Over the past five years, we incurred a total U.S. tax expense of almost $59 billion, which is $18 billion more than we earned in the United States during the same period. Critics often try to ignore these facts by saying the oil and gas industry receives “subsidies.” But what they really mean is that they want to increase our taxes by taking away long-standing deductions for our industry while leaving these same deductions in place for other sectors of the economy.

I'm not the best at math, but i do know its hard to make a 69% increase in profit if they are only making .2 cents a gallon.

Last time i checked, gas prices are driven by speculation.

If they were making 1 cent and are now making 2 cents that would be a 100% increase in profits. I'm on the side of truth.

I believe in simple, practical and easy to implement solutions.

When gas prices exceed $2.00 per gallon, reduce the taxes such that the price falls below. No taxes can be leveed until it is below that $2/gallon and then only up to $2./gallon.

When the various government entities snouts are pulled from the trough they will find a solution.

Honestly I'm not on anyone's side on this. You seem to be very gullible to the blame game that certain forms of pond scum like to play though. Rest assured that the pond scum isn't on your side or mine.

Just what in the hell do you think speculators do? They are simply looking at the world and placing their bets on where oil futures will be in a given time frame. Pay too much for those oil futures and you screw nobody but yourself. A speculator has zero incentive to pay too much for oil, and that is the only way for them to drive up the cost of oil. BTW my step brother was in the fuel oil business on the east coast from the '70s through the mid '90s.

If you really want to understand why oil is going through the roof right now first you need to understand that the price of oil is based on the dollar. Second you need to understand that this administrations policy of "Quantitative Easing" is nothing but printing more and more dollars. That devalues the dollar so it will buy less. That means you need to spend more dollars for each barrel of oil you want to purchase. Same goes for a loaf of bread, or anything else you wish to buy.

So tell me who exactly is it that is f***ing us right now. It sure as hell isn't the oil companies.

Sure, I believe that....about as much as I believe that the gas station down the street is selling gas for $.02 profit a gallon. (that's supposedly the same profit they were making back in the early '70's when gas was $.25 a gallon.)

Prowler, I can't vouch for the gas station down the street from you, but the vast majority of them (including my father’s) do not sell gas at a profit anymore due to competition. All the profits are made in the convenience stores, car washes and repair shops. If you aren't selling at cost, or possibly below cost, then your customers will go down the street to the guy who is. There is very fierce competition, and no consumer loyalty. I haven't seen a standalone gas station in years.

The only gas stations that I know make a profit off of gas are the ones that are on toll roads, or are the only gas station within 50 miles.

And for the amount that Exxon, or any other fuel company, makes in profit...How much in additional GOVERNMENT taxes are added to the price. The GOVERNMENT makes money on something that they have nothing at stake in.

Profits are not a bad thing. Without them, we would all be unemployed.

All the GOVERNMENT has to do is drop their taxes on the fuel, have the EPA loosen all the regulations on all the different fuel blends across the country and the price would drop like a rock. But that would be too easy....

dont be mad at the oil companies (I do love my stocks in them !) be MAD at the FED for making your dollar WORTHLESS.

go find the Mustang to Gas consumer index that I did.... gas should be about 4.57 per gallon to make it in nominal percentage of purchase power.... and look where it is at.
Its economics folks, pure plain, simple, supply, demand, ROI, Foreign exchange, transportation, speculation, taxation, OPEC directives, exploration limitations, drilling prohibitions, refining costs, insurance, legal, environmental, terrorist mitigation and of course distribution.
Yep, its all very simple. Maybe the white house will try and artificially germander something together the way they have with HealthCare and Securities Investing..... um, you should think real hard about that one.

Well for God's sake man, point me to the gas stations that are selling gas below cost. (I believe the law in Wisconsin still states that a business must make at least 6% on all products they sell, that's why people in Wisconsin go to Ill. when they make large purchases, like when they load up on Christmas items, 'cause in Ill. they can actually sell things at a loss without breaking the law........not the case in WI. last I heard.)

What doesn't make sense is the gas stations down in the ghetto of Milwaukee that are all steel bars and bulletproof glass WITH NO CANDY BARS & SODA for sale, sell gas for .20 a gallon cheaper than the stations in the burbs.....sorry, I'm not buying the "selling gas at a loss" story.

Been through this before.

amount of profit and margin ( percentage ) of profit are 2 different things.

Sell 100 tires with a buck profit each, make 100 buck. Sell a billion tires, a billion bucks. Same percentage, bigger profit.

To bad they don't teach math anymore.

Fact, the guy at the local gas station has to pay for the next load of gas with this loads sales. There's a little slippage, time wise, but not much.

So, when the guy down the street raises prices, you have to too. Not conspiracy, just sense. You only make a few cents a gallon at the Quickee mart. Really. Cigarettes, beer, sports drinks. That's the profit. Gas is just to get them in the door.

Sell below cost? only for a short time. Hours, not days. Very little selling gas at a loss is on purpose. It's usually because the the next truck load costs more than you got for the last one, and that was pretty damn common back in the last bogus gas "crisis".

This artificial crisis is mostly the fall in the dollar. Which is on purpose. To raise the cost of gas, to YOU. Ask the Energy sec.

Baaaaaaaaaaaa! Economic illiterate sheep. The price of gas at your local station is the caboose of a very long train. Unfortunately, John Q never learned to think beyond the first link.

Think there might be a link between $4.65/gallon gas and $1600/oz gold?

Think there might be a link between $4.65/gallon gas and NO offshore oil supply?

Think there might be a link between $4.65/gallon gas and $.39/gallon refinery cost since we haven't approved a new refinery in the US since the 70's?

Think there might be a link between $4.65/gallon gas and $.46/Federal taxes on gas.

Think there might be a link between $4.65/gallon gas and the middle east being on fire?

The oil companies are an easy target. They are slow, large, and visible. Kinda like every other "big" out there.

Odd how the definition of "big business" keeps getting smaller and smaller.

>>>To bad they don't teach math anymore.

They kind do . . . but the neighborhood organizers, those wanting to make certain that no one gets a scrape on the playground or has to deal with the emotional trauma of having someone do better have changed the rules just a tad.

quote:

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20 ..

5. Teaching Math In 1990s

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)
