Some of you may remember the recent "Happy Birthday Ma Bueller" thread here on the Quick Board. This is Ma B 'n me back in March at her 87th birthday party: I think I was genetically predisposed to love motorcycles: My Mom rode, my Mom's Dad rode, my uncles rode, all mostly Harleys or Indians, but the brand matters less than the love of riding that was passed down, and I've got it in spades. Thanks, I believe, to the best Mom a feller like me could ever have: Ma B! My sassy Sis Sue and I have been planning a little surprise for Mom. Way back when, when I first kinda "got" what Harleys were all about, Mom gave me a priceless photo of her taken "back in the day." I have that photo somewhere, safely tucked away in a box, and by golly I'll find it someday. In 1984 I sent a copy of this photo to Easyriders magazine for consideration for their monthly "In The Wind" feature, and lo and behold a couple of months later they published this pic and Ma Bueller was even more famous than she already was! Alas, I have a copy of this mag tucked away somewhere, too, probably in the same box the photo is in. Sassy Sis Sue has a copy of the magazine, but it's a little rough, so she got online, sourced a couple of primo copies, sent me one, and, well, ladies and germs, may I present Ma Bueller: OMG, she's HAWT!! Here's what Mom wrote to all y'all here on the board back in March: This thread is as addictive as life! A million thank yous to each of you for your warm Birthday wishes!!! My circle of friends is growing by leaps and bounds! When I was a teenager (way back in the last century!) we pretty much created our own entertainment--this was before TV, computers, smart phones etc--. I didn't have any sisters but I did have two brothers and their friends had bikes and of course, some of their friends were 'my friends'. That's where my love of motorcycles started, because of the guys! But this thread isn't long enough for all those stories! And after some gentle prodding, here's a little story she penned that ties into the photo above: I graduated from High School in a small town named Concrete, Washington. One of my boyfriends had a brand new 1942 Baby Blue Buick convertible and another bf had a Harley. Enter rivalry into the picture and the inevitable race happened! These were country roads folks and traffic was light. There's a section of road west of Concrete that has a several mile straight-a-way and we posted people at each end to stop what little traffic there was and the Buick and the Harley entered the race of the decade! I got to drive the Buick! I can still feel the adrenaline! The race ended a tie at 125+ mph! We had to back off because of curves and traffic. FB, should I have posted this as 'anonymous'? Nope, Mom, your story has the FB "Squeal of Approval" - we're all family here. I'll be pointing Ma Bueller to this thread; I think she'll be pleased. I'm convinced, yet again, that I ride because of my Mom. That's quite a gift, folks. FB |

"Is that a Panhead? " It's a Knucklehead. |

Knuclehead, not pan, which puts the bike from '36 to '47. We used to play Concrete back in school in the 1960s, from farther down Highway 9. The North Cascades Highway is scenic, with plenty of curves and enough straights to pass most of the RVs. My mother told me I couldn't ride motorcycles, they scared her. 71 bikes later, I'm still doing the opposite of what she says. |

That is exactly the reason I stropngly encourage EVERY WOMAN to step out and do something daring, that way they will have a history. My most fun was a 30 something little girl, my best friends daughter, she had just lost a daughter to a congenital heart defect. She showed up for a FBI swat team shoot and I encouraged her to shoot the MP5. I have a picture of my grand mother in a Lamborgini, and on an elephant. Women of the world...go ahead....make a memory! |

And Jerry, Ma's bike back then is sooooooooo much cooler then that couch you ride now! So true, Corso - that ol' Knuck is the Granddaddy of all H-D Big Twins to this day. I dig the way the header pipes collect and empty into...............air! Bet that sucker was loud!! FMJ and JB2, "Hot Jer" is sort of a dyslexic abbreviation of Jerry Haughton, a term of endearment given to me by my Mom and still used to this day - this was way before Ferris Bueller came along. One of the fabulousnest multi-day, multi-state motorcycle tours I've ever done was with Ma B back in the early 80's, she on her Yamaha 650 Maxim, me on my Yamaha XS-850 triple, up and down the West Coast, sleeping under the stars, the Redwoods, Mt. Shasta, Crater Lake, the Oregon Cascades, the Columbia River Gorge... I've got those photos somewhere, too... FB |

Okay Ferris, I'm buying your story on the nickname but it doesn't mean that it won't used against you in the court of drinking bikers. The parallels in our lives continue to surprise me. Dad had a Yammie 850 Special. Looking forward to the pictures. |

Hey Folks, thanks for all your flattering comments! I find it hard to believe I was ever that young. I was 17 when that picture was taken, newly graduated from High School and enjoying my last summer of freedom before going into Nurse's training. I used to do hill climbing on that bike, sometimes up at Point Roberts. (look it up, it's an interesting part of the good ole USofA). I wasn't as good as the guys on the climbs though--my legs just aren't long enough! I think I still have a few bits of gravel imbedded in one of my knees as a lasting memento. |
