In celebration, I'm cutting down a few trees to light the tire bonfire for tonight!

As you may know, tires don't smoke if you burn them at night....

I am praising global warming, riding to the snow line that is only at 3200 feet this afternoon.

I burned some dinosaur extract.

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.” • Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….” • Life Magazine, January 1970

“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.” • Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University

Funny, those things never came to be because we took action to prevent it. "If present trends continue" is the big if. Last time I checked, a run of the mill car running around in 1970 was quite a bit different than a run of the mill car running around today. In 1966 smog was the cause of 169 deaths in NYC. We cleaned up our act, and smog isn't a huge problem anymore. (At least in US cities)

I'm not sure what they are going on about with the famine thing, but I assume it might be related to the general abuse people were doing to the planet, polluting rivers and such.

What actions did we take in 1970 to prevent "global cooling"?

How exactly is the smog that in 1970 was going to blot out the sun and drop the global temperature 11 degrees now going to raise the global temperature by 10 degrees?

They were wrong in 1970 and they are wrong today.

Pollution due to smog is different than these doomsday global warming/global cooling hysteria campaigns.

For every article I've ever read mentioning global warming, I've seen another one mentioning the same thing is causing global cooling. To be honest I am not sure which is right, I personally believe its just the earth going through natural cycles. Are we having an affect on it? Sure, but not a major one at the moment. I do believe that our various uses of resources and excessive pollution will come back to bite us in the ass as things like ozone depletion and other anomalies take its toll on the environment, which will cause unpredictable changes.

follow the money. look at who is spouting the next cataclismic trend and see if they have their hand out, or are already lining their pockets with 'grants and study' money.

snake oil, smoke and mirrors, and we keep paying for it.

I am no environmentalist, but you are blind if you can't see the impact we have on the planet and the environment we live in. The earth does have an amazing ability to repair itself, but that does not mean pollution doesn't have negative effects on our environment and our health.

One word:

Volcano.

All of the CO2 ever produced by mankind in the history of mankind is belched out in like a day from a really big eruption.

Nothing we do means anything globally speaking.

It's a scam.

Carbonbigfoot, that is a old myth. According to the US Geological Survey, it is estimated that 130 million tons of CO2 are released into the atmosphere annually. (I've heard 130-230 depending on the source). Annual emissions by human activities are estimated at 27 billion tons.

Frogs, didn'tcha know this entire thread is controlled by experts?

I for one appreciate Earth Day and its premises. I take the time to recycle what I can- still need to set up a decent compost bin.

Will be planting a vegetable garden again this weekend.

Plants are cool. Literally and figuratively.

I love all youn's.

I do not believe that anyone wants pollution. The USA has done a pretty good job over the years reducing pollution. We just need to distinguish between pollutants and gasses that are significantly naturally occurring. I believe we need to stop hyping one particular small component gas while ignoring the major greenhouse gases. The link below presents interesting information regarding water vapor as by far the most significant green house gas dwarfing C02.

We need to live like the humans in the movie Planet of the apes. That is the only way humans will survive the next millinium.
oo gaa cha kaa
oo gaa cha kaa

But seriously, next time your outside at night....look at the big pitcure... yea... look UP into the stars. Thats were our future lies. A cazillion million other planets possibly better than our current planet...just gotta get there. Just think of our planet as a turd next time you flush.... there is allways another one there the next day.

All this Global talk is just that, TALK to 90% of people. We need real proof. But we have mess the planet up more before we realize we really need it....so... just let it happen. I am for all this Green shit but am not that worried about the planet in the big picture.

Maybe in 500 years there will be a new Human-Lifestyle guidline, (non-religious) for ALL humans on the earth to live by, a new rulebook. Wait a min... isn't that just like STARTREK Next Generation??? WTF.

Squids I did learn a little in College when the woods were too muddy to hunt or roads were too icy to ride.
What most consider pollutants are actually naturally occuring materials we are moving around. The global warming proponanats have incomplete models water is a climate moderator. Evaporation cools the earth 1140btus per lb, warm wet air is lighter by volume than dry air warm air rises. My fellow pilots on bad web will recognize temperature lapse formula to determine the cloud base. Once the cloud has formed we get SHADE reducing global warming. Clouds like an other form of isulation stabilize temperature exchanges. Remember how cold it gets on cloudless nights in winter.
Life will find a way it cant be stopped only delayed its form will change its chemistry changes but life prevails. OIL haters what happens to diesel fuel when its stored? Turbo heads give the others a chance to answer.

Algae eats it right in your fuel tank.

Yes, tomato/tomatoe....

There is nothing in nature that allows for things like our Superfund sites, Yucca Mountain, even Copper Hill TN in my own "backyard".

Forget about the methane from ruminants- Humanity's ability to alter the environment alters the world in unnatural ways.

I try to be a conservationist, most of the time. Live lightly on the land and all the Mother Earth News stuff.
I respect real environmentalists and the need to better understand the complex systems that exist in this world.

We all want clean air and water. duh. Having a fire to not freeze is good too.

When environmental science becomes pop culture, I tend to doubt it's veracity.

Somehow I don't picture Paris Hilton as an environmental scientist.

When real scientists have to falsify data in order to receive grants that jive with the popular narrative, the who discussion gets tainted.

This thread has inspired me to go digging in my library.

Just started reading "Chariots of the Gods" again.

You may not agree with with all that Von Daniken postulates, I certainly don't, but he raises some very interesting questions.

The best thing about his books, I've found, is that they made me think about things in a different way, not just accepting popular conceptions.
