I am thinking of joining the 20th century, and getting cell phones for my son and I, but I am unwilling and unable to spend $70-$100 a month for something I would use as an emergency phone, and to stay in contact with my son while he's away at BSA camp for the summer. Does anyone know of a good pre-paid provider that would allow me to spend no more than $200 a year? I don't want or need to text, and I already have a camera, I just want a long distance 'walkie-talkie'. Thanks! |

Virgin offer prepaid packages. My son (12YO) is one one. I pay $15.00 a month in credits for it. if it runs out HE pays for the balance of his calls. (he has yet to run out!) I bought the phone from Virgin c7 years ago. I think it cost me $9.99. I now have a T-Mobile pay as you go phone. It costs me $30.00 to top it up & I have to top up a minimum of every 3 months. I only use mine for emergencies. Chris C |

Have any family members that live nearby that already have cell service who might let you piggy back on their account? Most cell phone service providers have deals where you can add a line for $10/month and get a no frills phone free. |

I used NET-10 For almost 6 years before switching to Verizion earlier this year! I have had Great Signal strength where ever I go, good customer service and best of all they are cheap! Phones range in price depending on what you want out of them! You can be on a monthly plan or just buy a minimum of $30 card every couple months. Best part is if you just buy the cards the mins roll over, I still keep my old phone as a back up and because I purchased cards so often my phone number will not expire untill 2021! You can pick up a NET-10 phone at Wal-Mart! My lastest Net-10 phone i was able to purchase min with the phone instead of going into the store but I did have the "fanciest" phone they had! Good luck and hope this helps! |

I wish you luck but as I pay almost your yearly max per month for my three phones I am at a loss on where to send you. |

I use a trac-phone for our floater phone. You can get monthly charges down to about $12 if you stay under 30 mins a month. The phone and service is actually pretty good around me in Ohio. But the customer service is epically, comically, unbelievably bad. The kind of stuff that makes a monty python skit look unimaginative. FWIW. |

Yeah, tracphone and the other no-contract phone setups thru walmart seem to be a pretty good deal. You can get 1000 minutes of voice, 1000 texts, and some data time for $30/month, plus phones for as little as $20. Not bad - makes me think about looking into a switch, now that I look at it more closely. |

We use go-phones and maybe use them twice a week. $100 for 1,000 minutes, good for a year and rollover if you renew before time is up. Sam's Club sells a couple phones for $80 or less. Cheaper if you want the basics. T-Mobile is our choice but there might be others. |
