"Playa del Carmen"

That's funny. I know a guy who used to work in IT. He said screw it, and moved there. He runs a scuba shop and a sport fishing boat. Living large. He's from Argentina originally, speaking the language helps.

If you had the choice to move to a different city which would it be?

Hamilton, MT, Colorado Springs, CO or Byron Bay, NSW Australia

What would be the main reasons for that city? (Or maybe state, or country)

Hamilton, because I never have been anywhere that felt so "Right" the first day I was there, and it stayed that way the entire time I was there.
Colo. Spgs. was my home for four years, and it also seemed like I belonged there.
Byron Bay has the South Pacific, some great roads nearby, very friendly people, and the best Steak sandwich I've ever tasted.

Would it be the climate, cost of living, family/friends, riding roads, geography? Something else specific? Or just "the vibe"?

A little of all the above in each choice.

Mayberry, N.C.

Try Mt. Airy NC, thats where the show was. Only thing that I know of there thats really called "Mayberry" is the local mall, all 15 stores of it.

My dad retired there and everywhere you turn there is something related to the show. Nice people, low cost, quick access to the Blue Ridge Parkway....down side is that there aren't really any jobs in the area. I could see myself settling down there for retirement too.

A bit of trivia, the Siamese Twins "retired" there after their circus days, the town even dedicated a small bridge to the two of them on one of the main roads.

Like others have mentioned, I live in the Northeast (Albany, NY). I'm out of the "city" enough and have lots of great roads very close in literally all directions - it's no exaggeration that I'm surrounded by mountain ranges here, and the Adirondacks are the best of the bunch. I enjoy the winter (when it's not TOO long) and it gets damn hot in the summer, so we have a bit of everything. Seems like the perfect place for me.

That is, until I rode out west. If I were going to move (and I'm betting I will at somepoint) it will be west. I love the Rockies, the deserts of the southwest and the outskirts of the SoCal region.

The biggest drivers for a move would be these:
-Low populations, or the ability to "get out of dodge" in no time. Makes riding much more fun. I've been all over the east coast, and while you can be in the "sticks" for sure, you're really never more than a few miles from a traffic light pretty much anywhere east of the mississippi in my experience. I liked being able to tear ass for an hour at a stretch and not see another soul.
-Geography - I'm a freak about nature and national parks, and while things are nice in the east, they are just epic out west.
-Climate. I am a skier, but I'd be willing to give it up for year-round riding weather.

Are you giving serious thought to moving to the states?

LA sounds ominous to a lot of people. But, if you find the right spot, it is just fine.
I was pleasantly surprised by my visit and to find just how nice everything is, how easy it was to get away from the crowds and how there weren't as many weird people as I imagined. Sitting on the sidewalk seating of an italian eatery in the middle of "downtown" San Dimas while Doerman snuck in to pay the bill without my knowing, I had some time to myself to just sit and look at my surroundings and thought, for the first time on that trip, that I was in a place where I could see myself living. I'll be back for a visit as soon as I can get there, assuming he'll have me again!

Talk about getting out of Dodge (by the way . . the last hotel room I had in Dodge City actually had a bullet hole in the door) . . I get a kick out of teasing my wife who was born and raised in Park Slope Brooklyn; here in NYC . . . I tell her stories of leaving the office to run over to the kids' school to see a Easter Parade . . of driving home, having lunch and driving back to the office . . all in under an hour and she gets a confused look like a puppy looking at an oscillating fan for the first time.

We become accustomed to the 90-180 minute commute; use to fill the time with things, and so forth. I have to explain to her that. . .like $600,000 800SF "starter homes" . . t'aint normal.

I also, having lived in Kansas for 44 years before accidently stumbling into Gotham, have found that in most cases the opposite is true. . . folks in Kansas are aghast that I live in New York City and seriously ask me things like "what's it like to get mugged?".

I try to explain that I go to places in Harlem and Central Park and have not once, in all my years here, felt any reason for concern. I point out that the crime rate in Topeka, KS is several times (astronomically in fact) higher than NYC and that we have the greatest concentration of parks, museums and so forth on Planet Earth . . they just don't get it. Get them past Bonner Springs or Wakarusa and they are lost.

The riding roads . . and we keep our secrets better than some places . . are pretty darn good too . . . explaining in part why BMW comes to an area not far from here to film their signature "twisty road" car commercials.

I have to tell you . . having ridden in 44 states . . nothing that's been named yet would get checked off my list . . this is a gorgeous country from Coronado to the Hamptons

>>>Ah Coronado. I used to love to go there and watch the vacuum cleaners take off.

I live there for about 18 months and loved it. I was in the high rises (it's a GREAT story how, on $600/month salary I ended up in a 3,000 SF 10th floor condo) Coronado Shores for about 18 months.

My treat was eating at The Chart House across the street and then driving down the Silver Strand or wandering up and sitting on the hood of the car at the end of the North Island runway watching the comings and going with an 8-track playing and the doors open.

Good times . . . .

I've been doing some shuttling to and fro recently and I confess I've not been entirely truthful about why I fly into Lindburg Field and drive the "back roads" to LA. My typical trip profile is land . . head to Point Loma, then hit my favorite coffee joint in La Jolla, walk the cave, head to Carlsbad, coffee, wander North and tell the kids I "just got in". My next flight accidently (never let other folks do this for you) got booked into LAX so I'll substitute my old haunts in Manhattan Beack (1970-1972) and Marina del Rey (1993-1995) for my "diversion de jour".

This is why I stay in LA.

This shot was taken (10Feb2011 at about 3:30pm) looking northwest from Palos Verdes Dr. West. During a 21 mile bicycle ride.
Oh yea, it was 71F.

If I were to move I'd consider Berryville, Ark. Ozarks = good Ulysses riding.

Hmmm thats a tough one as I love Chicago. The weather sucks but the Food and general nightlife rock.

I guess if i moved it would have to be either the Pacific Northwest or perhaps the Cali Coast between LA and San Fran somewhere maybe San Luis Obismo. If i strike it Rich a ranch watching the sunset over the Tetons would be nice as well.

"Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee, it's good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey, disconnect the phone..." ; )

Interesting stuff. I'm getting more and more curious about Tennessee/Georgia/the Carolinas/(West)Virginia. Would you call that the north part of the south? It sounds like a nice part of the world and easy to live, and central in a way to a lot of other areas.

Aesquire - Cool, I kind of wondered if that's what you meant. Even here they get a little too intrusive for my liking, but in a different way to the US.

Are you giving serious thought to moving to the states?
Ummm... I find it really interesting what people think about different places and what draws them to a city or area, and I like learning about different areas of the US (there's soooo much variety), but there is a research element too : )

she vetted quite nicely. Her Dad is military, we have a few of the same most notables in common. He is not exactly excited about an American nearly his age marrying his little girl, but she is happy, and that carries huge weight.
I am opting out of the whole immigration shenanigans by relocating there. And her family seems to be happier about that notion all together.
It will be an adventure, one for the books.

If you're interested in the Southeast area, I would recommend that you check out Chattanooga, TN. Chattanooga is about the perfect size city for those who don't like a megalopolis but still want the conveniences offered by a city. It's also nicely located in the foothills of the Appalachians. For more information and pictures, take a look at Rotzarucks thread in the Talesection.http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/681 7/288803.html?1302715483

I have actually started a book, nothing that will fly here because 1) its in cyrillic 2) its the romance fairytale stuff that best be associated with a childrens story and not a biker, 3 my artistic renderings are one notch above teenage magazine collages. (or below, depending on who you ask.

once Kindle / Apple can support cyrillic I will publish.

Would you call that the north part of the south?
No, it's the heart of the Southeast.
Appalachia is truly unique, beautiful, and the people are fiercely independent.
It's a place that one must experience rather than just drive through.
The history is rich with Native Americans, Scotch Irish, Scandinavians, Germans, etc...
On my Mom's Dad's side they settled in Western North Carolina because that's where the wagon wheel broke (true story).
Come visit us, you'll see a whole different world from what y'all visited the last time y'all were here.

+ 1 on Chattanooga area. Would be awesome for Sept thru May. Twisty roads, four seasons, no state income tax. Closer to our GA and NC friends and family than we are now. Would still be easy to visit FL to teach occasionally as long as the in-laws keep a place here. Ft. Collins, CO would be a good second choice for some of the same reasons plus closer to friends in Orange County, CA.

Still would want to spend summers in Minnesota. With the exception of the mosquitos, love everything about that place when it's not covered with snow. B.
