I was wondering if you folks could indulge me in a bit of a survey...

If you had the choice to move to a different city which would it be?
What would be the main reasons for that city? (Or maybe state, or country)
Would it be the climate, cost of living, family/friends, riding roads, geography? Something else specific? Or just "the vibe"?

cheers,
chili : )

Thinking Texas, inland, within 20 miles of a city.... haven't looked, but later....

reasons? climate, geography, vibe, level of personal responsibility...

sub reasons, want to hang glide, ride, and live away from the admittedly beautiful, but very pricey, North East, specifically, Western NY. We've had a serious loss of manufacturing jobs, and a city school system that is very lucrative to be management of, but graduates less than half the kids. ( and half of them shouldn't have )

To pick just one city, though...

Lincoln Nebraska. Good schools, museums, stuff to do. ( but crappy hang gliding... )

We're getting out of the city.
I'm just tired of the attitude, the hurry hurry, the traffic, the drivers, I could go on and on.
We'll be out in the country, trying for Suches.
Definitely staying in the Southern Appalachians.
Just away from all this mess.

OZ - 6 months of the year.

REALLY want to do the endless summer. I'd NEVER have to retire if I could work part time in two hemispheres.

For the people, it might have to be Fiji though

I would move to St Mary's/Kersey Pennsylvania.
I go there twice a year for dirtbike trips awesome riding. I have brought the Buell before and the road riding is great also!
The cost of living is cheap, people are friendly, lifelong friends were made there and its a much more simple life.I have been going there for 8 years now, nothing ever seems to change no massive building no expansion just the same as last time etc...Everybody knows everybody and what there doing etc...

Why can I not go now? Reason #1 wife likes it where we are and doesn't want to move.(someday I'll change her thinking). Reason#2 no work for me there.
Kinda contradicting huh?would lead to a simple life........

Hope this answers your post...

Closest to family and good friends. Kilgore, TX is great. Dewitville, NY in the Summer would be wonderful.

I would be in a remote suburb of Denver, CO. Minutes from the mountain roads. I used to go there every year. I hope to get back soon. The only thing that keeps me in WI is my business and 2 wonderful families (her's and mine).

Then again.......I have never been off of the North American continent. That could all change though someday.

Someplace just outside of Lahaina, Maui. Certainly NOT for the cost of living or I'd be there now. Driest part of the island for a homestead yet no more than an hour away from rain forest, nice beaches, mountains, you name it. If I ever get homesick for New England winters I can just ride up to the top of Mount Haleakala and freeze my a** off for a while.

I've moved around a lot to get to where I am.
I like it here. I am staying put.

LA sounds ominous to a lot of people. But, if you find the right spot, it is just fine.

If there were no other concerns like family and so on it would be somewhere in central Costa Rica.
It would be nice to have its climate, cost of living, decent infrastructure, and laid back atmosphere.

It's amusing you should say that. I happen to be in Lincoln for school. Went to the natural history museum a couple weeks ago--pretty cool. I need to find time to go to the museum of American Speed...

To keep on topic, I have no desire to live in a city. Somewhere in the north woods of MN or MI would be perfect, in my opinion. Shorter riding season, but wonderful winters. Snowmobiles when there's snow, motorcycles when there's not = perfect.

Vancouver, Canada, for ease of moving within the Commonwealth. But, at the very SW of the B.C. mainland is Pt. Roberts, a little known sliver of Yank soil only reachable by boat or road through British Columbia. Live there as a number of Canadians do, cheap rent in a mostly summer community, get a Speedpass for the border, work in Vancouver and travel down to the States as you like.

I like Asheville NC, and all of western NC.

Austin TX doesn't appear to suck.

According to Char, Charleston doesn't suck- great food, great history, on the water, still in the South.

Mebbe Suffragette City.

I have made moves and motives heading to Kiev, Ukraine, I have web-interviewed for three jobs, and I am hoping one of them comes through.

Reasons. I speak the language. Cost of living, (living on a western salary in a depressed from Soviet E European economy ? !) The food, endless travels searching for the perfect piroshki is on the agenda,
The booze ! The Clubs ! And of course the women; especially one in particular.

The other ancillary bonuses?... no intrusive, IRS, EPA, ACLU, Forced Medical, Rapid De-escalating assets, Toxic DC Bureaucracy encroachment, and a complete lack of the 'Icon/Reality TV' culture.

Pictures and Post cards as it happens.
Did I mention the Ukraine girls leave the west behind ?

City, Send me a ticket when you get there!! Pleeease???

I do like Northern Arkansas. Love the roads, hills, and being out in the country. It's a tough call. Weather is not bad, but I would like a slightly milder winter, and a summer with less humidity. Somewhere in AZ, NM maybe. I'm really thinking about Western Arkansas. Within 20 miles of a larger city rather than 60 or so.

If I had the money, and the politics, weren't such crap, I'd consider going back to parts of California for the weather and beauty that still exsist there.. Away from the whole central west coast area from the Bay to LA!

Thank you for your thoughts, peoples. It's given me some things to think about and research : )

level of personal responsibility
Aesquire, do you mean in an isolated look after yourself kind of way, or in an actual legal sense? Sorry if that's an odd question, but had to ask.

We're getting out of the city.
Maybe I should've said "region"? I've lived right in the middle of a big city, and I loved it back then, but these days I like space, neighbours that aren't too close, and somewhere to build a big shed/barn/studio. Around Suches sounds like it'd be good for a place like that : )

LA sounds ominous to a lot of people. But, if you find the right spot, it is just fine.
It was just a little ominous to me, now somewhere near LA is actually very appealing. Maybe Slaughter and I will work out a deal one day

endless travels searching for the perfect piroshki
It sounds like the perfect quest : )

As much as we love NYC we are looking for a 2nd home with the idea of retiring (again) someday.

I let Henrik do the walking . . a couple years ago Henrik, one of the world's most analytical folks, set about researching places to live. I waited until he narrowed the choice after a couple years of making several visits to various places and collecting tons of demographic data.

We're in the process of starting a major renovation of the house in NYC and will use the work as an excuse to visit some other places.

I've been to some of the places already mentioned and there's not a bad one in the lot . . .

By the way . . if I were in Brisbane . . I'd be taking a close look at the Whitsundays.

: )

One of our old Badweb pals just bought a little boat (the size of a small city) and it's looking, with 4 king size beds and full baths, like a great place to live . . .until I get kicked out.

The Whitsundays are a BEAUTIFUL part of the world, but too freakin' hot for most of the year for me! Definitely worth scoring a bunk on that "little boat" for a while though Court. He wouldn't kick you out and make you swim home would he? ; )

level of personal responsibility....

legal, taxes, slightly less nanny state.
NY is the Empire ( Imperial ) state. Very high taxes, fuel costs, creeping useless bureaucracy, etc. the NYC area dominates the State govt. and solutions for an extreem population density area may not apply where there are horse farms and orchards......

>>>He wouldn't kick you out and make you swim home would he?

I already told him I lived within about a 9-iron of the shore and to come pick me up . . .

: )

NY, the state, is pretty goofy. Taxes, with NY City Earnings Tax are certainly an issue as well . . I try to fuel in NJ when I can, one of the cheapest in the nation next to one of the most expensive. . that's a no brainer. . . tolls are high, about $28 a day . . . but, as evidenced by the 400,000+ tourists arriving in our 3 airports daily, there is no place in the world like it . . we have more parks than any city in the country, most are lavish and there are amazing places, horse farms and meadows, within the 5 boros (check out my NYC photo pages of pics I take driving to and from work daily) if you know where they are . . .

But the Whitsundays. . . . I'd take that heat for a bit.

: )

Graham, We considered North Carolina so we could be close to our family and friends for many years. Funny that after our kids were grown and gone that we decided we were quite happy where we are.

Hot, muggy summers were one of the reasons we didn't go south. Not that Indiana is a lot better but it is somewhat better.

Indiana is smack in the middle of the temperate zone which means we have a real summer and a real winter. Indiana is flat but we're near the Appalachians and the Ozarks and the U.P. of Michigan is as near close to heaven as you can get.

If I were to live anywhere but Indiana now it would probably be somewhere in the sticks between Moab, Utah and Grand Junction, Colorado.

Portland, OR. Reasonable climate. Warm friends and cold beer.

Or a cabin in the mountains (anywhere) far from any paved road, and preferably only reachable by a rig set up for rock crawling. I need solitude to write my manifesto and isolation to go crazy enough to believe the garbage I'd be spewing.

Ha Ha Ha..... Ow! Mark, it hurts when I laugh that hard that quickly!

I will say Eastern Tennessee because I ride a Ulysses and it likes it here as much as I do.

The wife and I are facing a move in the near future and have asked each other the same question. We both voted to stay here. Me for most everything in East Tennessee but the cool damp winters, the rest of it I am on line with. My wife loves being near the grandchildren and is desiring to stay here also. We are looking to go lake front. I love these mountains for their beauty and Uly explore-ability. I never tire of Spring, Fall, and Summers here. Wintering in Florida would make it perfect for me.

But really, with everything a guy needs; Uly with awesome mountain twisties, the boat with lakes and fishing all around, and Jeep and dirt bike trails near by, and hunting areas, as long as the wife wants to stay.....why would I want go somewhere else?
