someone needs to add it to "that will buff out . com"
I have compassion for the rider (yes I do!) but I also have a sense of humour and that rider is striking a funny pose of surrender to the inevitable unfolding of reality.
Guy rode away from the accident according to Killboy. Some of the other frames looked even scarier than the one posted here. The rider is 73 years old BTW.
The Dragon on a Dresser . . . . there's one born every minute.
Court, with all due respect:
- The Tree of Shame at the Dragon is littered with sportbike parts, not dresser parts. - The Tennessee Highway Patrol infests the Dragon during the season on account of all the sportbike riders leaving in helicopters and body bags over the years, not dresser riders.
A dresser will handle the Dragon just fine. A sportbike ought to be able to, too, but you'd never know it from the mess they've made of the place.
How many Buell riders have gone down on the Dragon? I know of a couple, I'm sure there are a lot more that I don't know. Believe it or not, the Dragon is a public highway. It's designated U.S. Rt. 129. That means that any vehicle can use it. It's easy for anyone to make a mistake whether you're a highly skilled rider or a poorly skilled rider. Ask Valentino Rossi. Sometimes we get away with mistakes; sometimes they bite us in the ass. Are people dumping on the guy because he was on a Touring bike? Or was it because it's a Harley, or maybe because he wasn't dressed in the "Proper Uniform" for riding on that particular public road? From what I see in the two pictures, it looks like he cut the apex a little too tight, and his back wheel dropped off the pavement, then it highsided him when the sidewall rubbed the edge of the asphalt. I'm glad he's O.K., and that the bike was rideable
Crusty+1 - judging from the debris trail from the 'gutter'... good assessment. That would have been tough to ride out on just about anything. It looks like he may have bounced off the slope (do I see dust and leaves next to the wall?)
Great shots. And the tough old cat walked away - now he's famous (or infamous). Not the way I'd want to have my day go, but all in all, not a bad crash.
sifo - exactly, but HD riders are just trying to copy the sportbike guys out there {insert the hundreds of videos online of sportbike people doind dumb stuff and crashing}
- The Tree of Shame at the Dragon is littered with sportbike parts, not dresser parts. Does it represent the number of crashes by type of bike, or demonstrate differences in damage between types of bikes? A machine without a fairing is not going to leave several pieces of plastic behind. The Tennessee Highway Patrol infests the Dragon during the season on account of all the sportbike riders leaving in helicopters and body bags over the years, not dresser riders. black{}I don't know if he reports all crashes or only serious/fatal, but reports from http://tailofthedragon.com/news.html do not appear to support the assertion a disproportionate percentage of crashes on the Dragon are attributable to sport bikes. Mr.& Mrs. Johnson do not always report the type of bike when they report the crashes, but assuming the crashes where the bike type is not specified are all sportbikes, 2010 would have been 50/50 and 2009 60/40 (with sportbikes the smaller percentage)
It is also interesting to note from reading his reports from the past 10 years that fatalities on the Dragon have doubled after the speed limit was lowered from 55 to 30 and the THP increased their "safety" efforts.}
I would have to give you straight 10's bud! A bunch for floorboard scrapage, and a bunch for the sport bikes you had just passed, and then even more for that awesome dismount... yup, you da man!
